    Incoherent non-Fermi liquid scattering in a Kondo lattice

    One of the most notorious non-Fermi liquid properties of both archetypal heavy-fermion systems [1-4] and the high-Tc copper oxide superconductors [5] is an electrical resistivity that evolves linearly with temperature, T. In the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 [5], this linear behaviour was one of the first indications of the presence of a zero-temperature instability, or quantum critical point. Here, we report the observation of a unique control parameter of T-linear scattering in CeCoIn5, found through systematic chemical substitutions of both magnetic and non-magnetic rare-earth, R, ions into the Ce sub-lattice. We find that the evolution of inelastic scattering in Ce1-xRxCoIn5 is strongly dependent on the f-electron configuration of the R ion, whereas two other key properties -- Cooper-pair breaking and Kondo-lattice coherence -- are not. Thus, T-linear resistivity in CeCoIn5 is intimately related to the nature of incoherent scattering centers in the Kondo lattice, which provides insight into the anomalous scattering rate synonymous with quantum criticality [7].Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (published version

    Solar-type dynamo behaviour in fully convective stars without a tachocline

    In solar-type stars (with radiative cores and convective envelopes), the magnetic field powers star spots, flares and other solar phenomena, as well as chromospheric and coronal emission at ultraviolet to X-ray wavelengths. The dynamo responsible for generating the field depends on the shearing of internal magnetic fields by differential rotation. The shearing has long been thought to take place in a boundary layer known as the tachocline between the radiative core and the convective envelope. Fully convective stars do not have a tachocline and their dynamo mechanism is expected to be very different, although its exact form and physical dependencies are not known. Here we report observations of four fully convective stars whose X-ray emission correlates with their rotation periods in the same way as in Sun-like stars. As the X-ray activity - rotation relationship is a well-established proxy for the behaviour of the magnetic dynamo, these results imply that fully convective stars also operate a solar-type dynamo. The lack of a tachocline in fully convective stars therefore suggests that this is not a critical ingredient in the solar dynamo and supports models in which the dynamo originates throughout the convection zone.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure.     Field Testing of Different Chemical Combinations as Odour Baits for Trapping Wild Mosquitoes in The Gambia

    Odour baited traps have potential use in population surveillance of insect vectors of disease, and in some cases for vector population reduction. Established attractants for human host-seeking mosquitoes include a combination of CO2 with L-lactic acid and ammonia, on top of which additional candidate compounds are being tested. In this field study in rural Gambia, using Latin square experiments with thorough randomization and replication, we tested nine different leading candidate combinations of chemical odorants for attractiveness to wild mosquitoes including anthropophilic malaria vectors, using modified Mosquito Magnet-X (MM-X) counterflow traps outside experimental huts containing male human sleepers. Highest catches of female mosquitoes, particularly of An. gambiae s.l. and Mansonia species, were obtained by incorporation of tetradecanoic acid. As additional carboxylic acids did not increase the trap catches further, this ‘reference blend’ (tetradecanoic acid with L-lactic acid, ammonia and CO2) was used in subsequent experiments. MM-X traps with this blend caught similar numbers of An. gambiae s.l. and slightly more Mansonia and Culex mosquitoes than a standard CDC light trap, and these numbers were not significantly affected by the presence or absence of human sleepers in the huts. Experiments with CO2 produced from overnight yeast cultures showed that this organic source was effective in enabling trap attractiveness for all mosquito species, although at a slightly lower efficiency than obtained with use of CO2 gas cylinders. Although further studies are needed to discover additional chemicals that increase attractiveness, as well as to optimise trap design and CO2 source for broader practical use, the odour-baited traps described here are safe and effective for sampling host-seeking mosquitoes outdoors and can be incorporated into studies of malaria vector ecology

    A sociological dilemma: race, segregation, and US sociology

    US sociology has been historically segregated in that, at least until the 1960s, there were two distinct institutionally organized traditions of sociological thought – one black and one white. For the most part, however, dominant historiographies have been silent on that segregation and, at best, reproduce it when addressing the US sociological tradition. This is evident in the rarity with which scholars such as WEB Du Bois, E Franklin Frazier, Oliver Cromwell Cox, or other ‘African American Pioneers of Sociology’, as Saint-Arnaud calls them, are presented as core sociological voices within histories of the discipline. This article addresses the absence of African American sociologists from the US sociological canon and, further, discusses the implications of this absence for our understanding of core sociological concepts. With regard to the latter, the article focuses in particular on the debates around equality and emancipation and discusses the ways in which our understanding of these concepts could be extended by taking into account the work of African American sociologists and their different interpretations of core themes

    Activation of Methanogenesis in Arid Biological Soil Crusts Despite the Presence of Oxygen

    Methanogenesis is traditionally thought to occur only in highly reduced, anoxic environments. Wetland and rice field soils are well known sources for atmospheric methane, while aerated soils are considered sinks. Although methanogens have been detected in low numbers in some aerated, and even in desert soils, it remains unclear whether they are active under natural oxic conditions, such as in biological soil crusts (BSCs) of arid regions. To answer this question we carried out a factorial experiment using microcosms under simulated natural conditions. The BSC on top of an arid soil was incubated under moist conditions in all possible combinations of flooding and drainage, light and dark, air and nitrogen headspace. In the light, oxygen was produced by photosynthesis. Methane production was detected in all microcosms, but rates were much lower when oxygen was present. In addition, the δ13C of the methane differed between the oxic/oxygenic and anoxic microcosms. While under anoxic conditions methane was mainly produced from acetate, it was almost entirely produced from H2/CO2 under oxic/oxygenic conditions. Only two genera of methanogens were identified in the BSC-Methanosarcina and Methanocella; their abundance and activity in transcribing the mcrA gene (coding for methyl-CoM reductase) was higher under anoxic than oxic/oxygenic conditions, respectively. Both methanogens also actively transcribed the oxygen detoxifying gene catalase. Since methanotrophs were not detectable in the BSC, all the methane produced was released into the atmosphere. Our findings point to a formerly unknown participation of desert soils in the global methane cycle

    Low back pain in 17 year olds has substantial impact and represents an important public health disorder: a cross-sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prevalence of low back pain (LBP) rises rapidly during adolescence, reaching adult levels by the age of 18. It has been suggested that adolescent LBP is benign with minimal impact, despite limited evidence.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of LBP and the influence of chronicity, gender and presence of other spinal pain comorbidities at age 17. Subjects (n = 1283) were categorised according to experiencing current and chronic LBP, gender and presence of other areas of spinal pain. LBP impact was ascertained via questions regarding seeking professional assistance, using medication, missing school/work, limited normal or recreational physical activity and health related quality of life (HRQOL).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>12.3% of participants reported current but not chronic LBP, while 19.9% reported current chronic LBP. LBP was more commonly reported by females than males. Other spinal pain comorbidities were common in the LBP groups. Impact was greater in subjects with chronic LBP, in females and in those with other spinal pain comorbidities.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>LBP, and particularly chronic LBP, has a significant negative impact at 17 years. It is commonly associated with care seeking, medication use, school absenteeism, and reduced HRQOL. These findings support that adolescent LBP is an important public health issue that requires attention.</p

    PET and SPECT Imaging in Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders

    Movement disorders can be classified in hypokinetic (e.g., Parkinson's disease, PD) and hyperkinetic disorders (e.g., dystonia, chorea, tremor, tics, myoclonus, and restless legs syndrome). In this chapter, we will discuss results from positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging studies in patients with tremor, tics, myoclonus, and restless legs syndrome. Most studies in patients with tremor included patients with essential tremor (ET): a bilateral, largely symmetric, postural or kinetic tremor mainly involving the upper limbs and sometimes the head. Other studies evaluated patients with orthostatic tremor (OT): an unusually high frequent tremor in the legs that mainly occurs when patients are standing still. Increased regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and increased glucose metabolism have been found in the cerebellum, sensorimotor cortex, and thalamus in both patients with ET and OT compared to controls. Both PET and SPECT studies have evaluated the dopamine system in patients with ET and OT. Most imaging studies in patients with ET showed no, or only subtle loss of striatal tracer binding to the dopamine transporter indicating that ET is not characterized by nigrostriatal cell loss. The serotonin and/or gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) systems may play a role in the pathophysiology of ET. PET and SPECT imaging of the dopamine and serotonin system in patients with OT showed no abnormalities. Tics, the clinical hallmark of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS), are relatively brief and intermittent involuntary movements (motor tic) and sounds (phonic tic). The essential features of tics are that (1) they can be temporarily suppressed; after suppression a rebound usually occurs with a flurry of tics; (2) the patient experiences an urge to tic, and (3) the tic is followed by a short moment of relief. Using 18F-FDG PET, it was shown that TS is a network disorder where multiple brain areas are active or inactive at the same time. The exact composition of this network is yet to be determined. Using rCBF PET and SPECT many brain regions were found to be abnormal, however, tics mostly correlated with hypoperfusion of the caudate nucleus and cingulate cortex. Both dopamine and serotonin are likely to play a role in the pathophysiology of TS. It is hypothesized that TS is characterized by low serotonin levels that modulate increased phasic dopamine release. Myoclonus is defined as a brief muscle jerk and occurs in many neurologic and non-neurologic disorders. Imaging with PET and SPECT in patients with myoclonus mainly showed abnormalities consistent with the underlying disorder. We described PET and SPECT imaging results in patients in which myoclonus was a prominent symptom. Hypoperfusion and/or hypometabolism of the frontoparietal cortex was found in patients with negative epileptic myoclonus, Alzheimer's disease, corticobasal degeneration, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, fatal familiar insomnia, and posthypoxic myoclonus. Other findings that were frequently reported were decreased rCBF and/or glucose metabolism in the cerebellum and thalamus and abnormalities in the dopamine system. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is defined as an urge to move the legs accompanied with an unpleasant sensation in the legs or in another body part that is especially present during the evening and night and that can be accompanied by periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS). Imaging studies in these patients have mainly focused on the dopamine system. Most PET studies found decreased tracer binding to the dopamine transporter, although this was not found in SPECT studies. Both PET and SPECT studies showed conflicting results regarding dopamine D2/3 receptor binding: both increased and decreased tracer binding was reported. Furthermore, it is likely that the serotonin and opioid systems also play a role in the pathophysiology of RLS.</p
