Direct epitaxial growth of submicron-patterned SiC structures on Si(001)

We report on the direct epitaxial growth of submicron-patterned SiC structures on Si(001) substrates using supersonic molecular jet epitaxy and resistless e-beam lithography. Prior to SiC film growth, an electron beam was scanned on hydrogen-passivated Si substrates in order to produce silicon oxide lines with widths greater than or equal to 60 nm. The SiC nucleation and growth rates were significantly reduced on the oxidized regions during the subsequent supersonic jet epitaxial growth of SiC, which yielded epitaxial, submicron-patterned SiC films. The, effects of the growth temperature and e-beam dose on the SiC growth and pattern linewidth are discussed. (C) 1999 American Vacuum Society. [S0734-211X(99)00906-3].open113sciescopu

Metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxial growth of vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorods

We report metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxial growth and structural and photoluminescent characteristics of ZnO nanorods. The nanorods were grown on Al2O3(00.1) substrates at 400 degreesC without employing any metal catalysts usually needed in other methods. Electron microscopy revealed that nanorods with uniform distributions in their diameters, lengths, and densities were grown vertically from the substrates. The mean diameter of the nanorods is as narrow as 25 nm. In addition, x-ray diffraction measurements clearly show that ZnO nanorods were grown epitaxially with homogeneous in-plane alignment as well as a c-axis orientation. More importantly, from photoluminescence spectra of the nanorods strong and narrow excitonic emission and extremely weak deep level emission were observed, indicating that the nanorods are of high optical quality. Zn-triggered critical behavior of the formation of highly coherent domains in a Mg1-xZnxO thin film on Al2O3

A series of Mg1-xZnxO (x=0, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15) thin films were grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on a (0001) sapphire substrate, and the structural characteristics of Mg1-xZnxO thin films were investigated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The increasing amount of Zn was found to gradually enhance the structural coherence of Mg1-xZnxO films. For a sample with 15 at. % of Zn, in particular, the formation of highly coherent domains in Mg1-xZnxO was observed to be triggered, with an accompanying phase separation of ZnO. An integrated intensity analysis predicted that the critical concentration x(c) of Zn at which the phase separation occurred was 0.086+/-0.015, and that the highly coherent domains in Mg1-xZnxO accounted for 12+/-1%.open11910sciescopu

Health literacy, health status, and healthcare utilization of Taiwanese adults: results from a national survey

Abstract Background Low health literacy is considered a worldwide health threat. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and socio-demographic covariates of low health literacy in Taiwanese adults and to investigate the relationships between health literacy and health status and health care utilization. Methods A national survey of 1493 adults was conducted in 2008. Health literacy was measured using the Mandarin Health Literacy Scale. Health status was measured based on self-rated physical and mental health. Health care utilization was measured based on self-reported outpatient clinic visits, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations. Results Approximately thirty percent of adults were found to have low (inadequate or marginal) health literacy. They tended to be older, have fewer years of schooling, lower household income, and reside in less populated areas. Inadequate health literacy was associated with poorer mental health (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.35-0.91). No association was found between health literacy and health care utilization even after adjusting for other covariates. Conclusions Low (inadequate and marginal) health literacy is prevalent in Taiwan. High prevalence of low health literacy is not necessarily indicative of the need for interventions. Systematic efforts to evaluate the impact of low health literacy on health outcomes in other countries would help to illuminate features of health care delivery and financing systems that may mitigate the adverse health effects of low health literacy.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78252/1/1471-2458-10-614.xmlhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78252/2/1471-2458-10-614.pdfPeer Reviewe

Copyright @ 2011 IEEEWe shall consider the the problem of determining the scattered far wave field produced when a plane E-polarized wave is incident on an imperfectly conducting rectangular cylinder. By using the the uniform asymptotic solution for the problem of the diffraction of a plane wave by a right-angled impedance wedge, in conjunction with Keller's method, the a high frequency far field solution to the problem is given
