Visual ecology of aphids – a critical review on the role of colours in host finding
We review the rich literature on behavioural responses of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) to stimuli of different colours. Only in one species there are adequate physiological data on spectral sensitivity to explain behaviour crisply in mechanistic terms.
Because of the great interest in aphid responses to coloured targets from an evolutionary, ecological and applied perspective, there is a substantial need to expand these studies to more species of aphids, and to quantify spectral properties of stimuli rigorously. We show that aphid responses to colours, at least for some species, are likely based on a specific colour opponency mechanism, with positive input from the green domain of the spectrum and negative input from the blue and/or UV region.
We further demonstrate that the usual yellow preference of aphids encountered in field experiments is not a true colour preference but involves additional brightness effects. We discuss the implications for agriculture and sensory ecology, with special respect to the recent debate on autumn leaf colouration. We illustrate that recent evolutionary theories concerning aphid–tree interactions imply far-reaching assumptions on aphid responses to colours
that are not likely to hold. Finally we also discuss the
implications for developing and optimising strategies
of aphid control and monitoring
Meta-analysis of prophylactic corticosteroid use in post-ERCP pancreatitis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Acute pancreatitis is a common complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and benefit of pharmacological treatment is unclear. Although prophylactic use of corticosteroid for reduction of pancreatic injury after ERCP has been evaluated, discrepancy about beneficial effect of corticosteroid on pancreatic injury still exists. The aim of current study is to evaluate effectiveness and safety of corticosteroid in prophylaxis of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We employed the method recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration to perform a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of corticosteroid in prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) around the world.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Most of the seven RCTs were of high quality. When the RCTs were analyzed, odds ratios (OR) for corticosteroid were 1.13 [95% CI (0.89~1.44), p = 0.32] for PEP, 1.61 [95% CI (0.74~3.52), p = 0.23] for severe PEP, 0.92 [95% CI (0.57~1.48), p = 0.73] for post-ERCP hyperamylasemia respectively. The results indicated that there were no beneficial effects of corticosteroid on acute pancreatitis and hyperamylasemia. No evidence of publication bias was found.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Corticosteroids cannot prevent pancreatic injury after ERCP. Therefore, their use in the prophylaxis of PEP is not recommended.</p
Bacterial Gut Symbionts Contribute to Seed Digestion in an Omnivorous Beetle
Obligate bacterial symbionts alter the diets of host animals in numerous ways, but the ecological roles of facultative bacterial residents that colonize insect guts remain unclear. Carabid beetles are a common group of beneficial insects appreciated for their ability to consume insect prey and seeds, but the contributions of microbes to diet diversification in this and similar groups of facultative granivores are largely unknown.Using 16S rRNA gene clone libraries and terminal restriction fragment (tRF) length polymorphism analyses of these genes, we examined the bacterial communities within the guts of facultatively granivorous, adult Harpalus pensylvanicus (Carabidae), fed one of five dietary treatments: 1) an untreated Field population, 2) Seeds with antibiotics (seeds were from Chenopodium album), 3) Seeds without antibiotics, 4) Prey with antibiotics (prey were Acheta domesticus eggs), and 5) Prey without antibiotics. The number of seeds and prey consumed by each beetle were recorded following treatment. Harpalus pensylvanicus possessed a fairly simple gut community of approximately 3-4 bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTU) per beetle that were affiliated with the Gammaproteobacteria, Bacilli, Alphaproteobacteria, and Mollicutes. Bacterial communities of the host varied among the diet and antibiotic treatments. The field population and beetles fed seeds without antibiotics had the closest matching bacterial communities, and the communities in the beetles fed antibiotics were more closely related to each other than to those of the beetles that did not receive antibiotics. Antibiotics reduced and altered the bacterial communities found in the beetle guts. Moreover, beetles fed antibiotics ate fewer seeds, and those beetles that harbored the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis consumed more seeds on average than those lacking this symbiont.We conclude that the relationships between the bacterium E. faecalis and this factultative granivore's ability to consume seeds merit further investigation, and that facultative associations with symbiotic bacteria have important implications for the nutritional ecology of their hosts
On Naturalness of the MSSM and NMSSM
With a bottom-up approach, we consider naturalness in the MSSM and NMSSM.
Assuming the light stops, the LHC gluino search implies that the degree of fine
tuning in both models is less than 2.5%. Taking the LHC hints for the SM-like
Higgs boson mass m_h\sim125 GeV seriously, we find that naturalness will favor
the NMSSM. We study the Higgs boson mass for several scenarios in the NMSSM:
(1) A large \lambda and the doublet-singlet Higgs boson mixing effect pushing
upward or pulling downward m_h. The former case can readily give the di-photon
excess of the Higgs boson decay whereas the latter case can not. However, we
point out that the former case has a new large fine-tuning related to strong
\lambda-RGE running effect and vacuum stability. (2) A small \lambda and the
mixing effect pushing m_h upward. Naturalness status becomes worse and no
significant di-photon excess can be obtained. In these scenarios, the lightest
supersymmetric particle (LSP) as a dark matter candidate is strongly disfavored
by the XENON100 experiment. Even if the LSP can be a viable dark matter
candidate, there does exist fine-tuning. The above naturalness evaluation is
based on a high mediation scale for supersymmetry breaking, whereas for a low
mediation scale, fine-tuning can be improved by about one order.Comment: JHEP version, adding some comments/references and improving Englis
Anormalidades de fluxo sangüíneo cerebral em indivíduos dependentes de cocaína Cerebral blood flow abnormalities in cocaine dependent subjects
INTRODUÇÃO: Nos últimos anos, tem havido relatos de anormalidades do fluxo sanguíneo cerebral em indivíduos com o abuso de cocaína, detectadas por meio de tomografia computadorizada por emissão de fóton único (SPECT). Esse padrão anormal de perfusão cerebral tem sido associado a prejuízos cognitivos mas não a alterações observáveis por meio de exames de neuroimagem estrutural. Um problema envolvendo a maioria dos trabalhos publicados sobre esse tema é a inclusão de um grande número de usuários de heroína nas amostras estudadas. Essa outra droga também parece afetar o padrão de perfusão cerebral, particularmente durante estados de abstinência. MÉTODOS: Quatorze pacientes dependentes de cocaína (nenhum com uso de opióides) e 14 voluntários normais (grupo controle) foram submetidos a exames de SPECT com dímero de etil-cisteína marcado com tecnécio-99m. A análise dos exames de SPECT foi realizada por meio de análise visual qualitativa das imagens obtidas (procedimento padrão na prática clínica), realizada por um radiologista não informado sobre o diagnóstico dos indivíduos avaliados. RESULTADOS: A análise visual revelou um padrão sugestivo de irregularidades do fluxo sangüíneo cerebral em nove pacientes, mas em apenas dois controles (p = 0,018; teste exato de Fisher bicaudal). CONCLUSÕES: Anormalidades de circulação cerebral podem ter relação com prejuízos cognitivos relatados em populações de dependentes de cocaína. Embora déficits de perfusão cerebral associados ao uso de cocaína possam ser irreversíveis, têm surgido relatos na literatura de tratamentos para essas anormalidades de fluxo sangüíneo. Alterações de fluxo sangüíneo cerebral associadas à dependência de cocaína ocorrem mesmo na ausência de abuso ou dependência de opióides.<br>INTRODUCTION: In the last years, there have been reports of abnormalities in brain blood flow of cocaine abusers, detected by single photon computed emission tomography (SPECT). This abnormal pattern of brain perfusion has been associated with cognitive impairments but not with changes that could be seen by the use of structural neuroimaging techniques. One of the problems with most of the published papers on the subject is the inclusion of a large number of heroin users in the studied samples. Heroin also seems to affect the pattern of brain perfusion, particularly during withdrawal states. METHODS: Fourteen cocaine-dependent inpatients (none of them under the use of opiates) and 14 healthy volunteers (control group) were submitted to 99m-technetium ethyl-cysteinate dimer SPECT. The analysis of SPECT exams was made by visual qualitative analysis of the reconstructed images (standard method in clinical practice), performed by a radiologist unaware of the subjects' diagnoses. RESULTS: Visual analysis showed a pattern suggestive of irregularities in the cerebral blood flow in nine patients, but in only two controls (p = 0.018; two tailed Fisher's exact test). CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal brain circulation may be related to cognitive impairments reported in cocaine dependent subjects. Although brain perfusion deficits associated with cocaine use may be irreversible, there have been reports in the literature of treatments for these blood flow changes. The quest for more effective analgesics with reduced abuse liability and fewer adverse effects: Promises, pitfalls, and future perspectives of biased agonists at opioid receptors
Chronic pain is a relevant health condition affecting one out of five individuals that is often not adequately treated by currently available analgesics. This, together with the dramatic increase in addicted people within the dramatic “opioid epidemics,” significantly spurs the quest for innovative analgesics provided with increased efficacy, reduced abuse liability, and fewer adverse effects. Within this frame, biased agonists at opioid receptors have attracted increasing interest in the last decade as they have emerged as more effective and safer candidate analgesics. In this chapter, promises, pitfalls, and future perspective of biased agonists at mu (MOR) and kappa (KOR) opioid receptors are discussed. Moreover, methodological insights are provided with regard to the most appropriate experimental settings to be employed aiming at developing novel biased KOR agonists
