Deep Space and the Quantum Mechanical Case: A Study of Stars to the First BSU Direct Measurement of a Singular Photon
While it is known that physics can be split into several different fields, it may be foreign to see how different fields of physics operate hand in hand with one another to solve complex problems. For instance, Maxwell’s equations involving E&M for the propagation of electro-magnetic waves can be used to understand light-based interferometry for astrophysics, which directly led to the creation of intensity-based interferometry. Eventually, the measurements and equations made by intensity-based interferometry would produce groundbreaking strides in quantum mechanics through the direct measurement of singular particles. An in-depth analysis of each of these connections and how they involved the physicists Hanbury Brown and Twiss will be told in the form of a unique story, transitioning from one field to another, showing the impact physics has and will have on understanding the nature of the universe whether it be from the size of a star or the size of a singular particle
Bio-sourced vinyl ester resin reinforced with microfibrillar cellulose: Mechanical and thermal properties
New thermoset composite material made from cardanol-based resin blended with microfibrillar cellulose was compared to petroleum-based vinyl ester and glass-fiber-reinforced unsaturated polyester in terms of mechanical, thermal, rheological and surface properties of produced polymers and composites. The bio-sourced material was less resistant than the commercial vinyl ester but comparable to the unsaturated polyester resin. Microfibrillar cellulose increased the tensile strength and modulus but increased the resin viscosity and decreased the mixture homogeneity. The bio-sourced and commercial resins displayed similar hydrophobic behavior, and cellulose slightly decreased composite hydrophobicity. The glass transition temperature of the bio-sourced material was comparable to that of the unsaturated polyester. Thermal decompositions of composites and thermoset polymers were also similar. Cellulose and cardanol thus may be adequate as sustainable components in the composite materials industry. © The Author(s) 2021
Off-Line Contouring of the Data from the Multibeam Sea Beam
The development of the Sea Beam processing system was undertaken in 1977. We now have available a complete system for off-line play-back of the Sea Beam data right up to precise isobath contouring along the ship’s track. The problem of combining the data from several profiles has not been tackled, but nevertheless a notable improvement has been made over the real-time output of the system. Although most of the algorithms do not deserve detailed description, it seems of interest to present the method used for contouring separately, endeavouring to show its advantages and disadvantages by concrete examples. We will then try to draw some conclusions which may be of help in furthering our programme. Finally, other applications are given which describe the processing system’s results without going into details about the algorithms used
