Statistics of Largest Loops in a Random Walk
We report further findings on the size distribution of the largest neutral
segments in a sequence of N randomly charged monomers [D. Ertas and Y. Kantor,
Phys. Rev. E53, 846 (1996); cond-mat/9507005]. Upon mapping to one--dimensional
random walks (RWs), this corresponds to finding the probability distribution
for the size L of the largest segment that returns to its starting position in
an N--step RW. We primarily focus on the large N, \ell = L/N << 1 limit, which
exhibits an essential singularity. We establish analytical upper and lower
bounds on the probability distribution, and numerically probe the distribution
down to \ell \approx 0.04 (corresponding to probabilities as low as 10^{-15})
using a recursive Monte Carlo algorithm. We also investigate the possibility of

Harnack Inequality and Regularity for a Product of Symmetric Stable Process and Brownian Motion
In this paper, we consider a product of a symmetric stable process in
and a one-dimensional Brownian motion in . Then we
define a class of harmonic functions with respect to this product process. We
show that bounded non-negative harmonic functions in the upper-half space
satisfy Harnack inequality and prove that they are locally H\"older continuous.
We also argue a result on Littlewood-Paley functions which are obtained by the

Lateral Separation of Macromolecules and Polyelectrolytes in Microlithographic Arrays
A new approach to separation of a variety of microscopic and mesoscopic
objects in dilute solution is presented. The approach takes advantage of unique
properties of a specially designed separation device (sieve), which can be
readily built using already developed microlithographic techniques. Due to the
broken reflection symmetry in its design, the direction of motion of an object
in the sieve varies as a function of its self-diffusion constant, causing
separation transverse to its direction of motion. This gives the device some
significant and unique advantages over existing fractionation methods based on

Finite Temperature Depinning of a Flux Line from a Nonuniform Columnar Defect
A flux line in a Type-II superconductor with a single nonuniform columnar
defect is studied by a perturbative diagrammatic expansion around an annealed
approximation. The system undergoes a finite temperature depinning transition
for the (rather unphysical) on-the-average repulsive columnar defect, provided
that the fluctuations along the axis are sufficiently large to cause some
portions of the column to become attractive. The perturbative expansion is
convergent throughout the weak pinning regime and becomes exact as the
depinning transition is approached, providing an exact determination of the

A Ball in a Groove
We study the static equilibrium of an elastic sphere held in a rigid groove
by gravity and frictional contacts, as determined by contact mechanics. As a
function of the opening angle of the groove and the tilt of the groove with
respect to the vertical, we identify two regimes of static equilibrium for the
ball. In the first of these, at large opening angle or low tilt, the ball rolls
at both contacts as it is loaded. This is an analog of the "elastic" regime in
the mechanics of granular media. At smaller opening angles or larger tilts, the
ball rolls at one contact and slides at the other as it is loaded, analogously
with the "plastic" regime in the mechanics of granular media. In the elastic
regime, the stress indeterminacy is resolved by the underlying kinetics of the

Children's Foreign Language Anxiety Scale: Preliminary Tests of Reliability and Validity
Foreign language anxiety (FLA), which constitutes a serious problem in the foreign language learning process, has been mainly seen as a research issue regarding adult language learners, while it has been overlooked in children. This is because there is a lack of appropriate tools to measure FLA among children, whereas there are many studies on the scales that aim to measure anxiety levels among adult learners. Thus, the current study aims to conduct the preliminary tests of reliability and validity of the Children's Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (CFLAS) and to report on the pilot examination of reliability, validity and factor structure of the CFLAS. The findings of the pilot study show that CFLAS is a reliable and valid tool to measure FLA levels among children who learn English as a foreign language (EFL) within the age range of 7-12 in a Turkish EFL context
Separable mechanisms drive local and global polarity establishment in the Caenorhabditis elegans intestinal epithelium
Apico-basolateral polarization is essential for epithelial cells to function as selective barriers and transporters, and to provide mechanical resilience to organs. Epithelial polarity is established locally, within individual cells to establish distinct apical, junctional and basolateral domains, and globally, within a tissue where cells coordinately orient their apico-basolateral axes. Using live imaging of endogenously tagged proteins and tissue-specific protein depletion in the Caenorhabditis elegans embryonic intestine, we found that local and global polarity establishment are temporally and genetically separable. Local polarity is initiated prior to global polarity and is robust to perturbation. PAR-3 is required for global polarization across the intestine but local polarity can arise in its absence, as small groups of cells eventually established polarized domains in PAR-3-depleted intestines in a HMR-1 (E-cadherin)dependent manner. Despite the role of PAR-3 in localizing PKC-3 to the apical surface, we additionally found that PAR-3 and PKC-3/ aPKC have distinct roles in the establishment and maintenance of local and global polarity. Taken together, our results indicate that different mechanisms are required for local and global polarity establishment in vivo
