A cultura da entronização e da eternização da elite política

    Get PDF

Us and them: how populist parties get their message across

    Get PDF
Current discussions about politics – be it European, British, or American – almost inevitably end up being discussions about populism. Yet we know little about how populist parties communicate their messages. Focusing on this area, and drawing on extensive research from across Europe, Toril Aalberg, Frank Esser, Carsten Reinemann, Jesper Stromback, and Claes de Vreese share some key findings on populist political communication

Bartter-like syndrome caused by kanamycin during therapy for multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (MDR-TB) is a highly prevalent communicable disease in South Africa and often occurs in those with HIV infection. We describe three HIV-infected patients with pulmonary MDR-TB who received treatment with a regimen that included kanamycin and subsequently developed a Bartter-like syndrome. The clinical presentation varied from asymptomatic to severely symptomatic electrolyte disturbances, with one fatal outcome. This report highlights the importance of the routine monitoring of electrolytes in MDR-TB patients receiving treatment that includes kanamycin

When Worlds Collide: Journalistic, Market, and Tech Logics in the Adoption of News Recommender Systems

An increasing number of media organisations are adopting news recommender systems (NRS). Such algorithmic technologies, which prioritise content based on, for example, previous user behaviour or popularity metrics, may have far-reaching repercussions for news work. Despite this, the implications of NRS implementation for intra-organisational practices as well as dynamics and tensions between involved actors remain understudied. Against this background, this study examines decision-making processes and relationships between actors participating in NRS projects from an institutional logics perspective and places a particular emphasis on resulting tensions between journalistic, market, and tech logics. Drawing on 32 in-depth qualitative interviews with news media professionals across ten news organisations in the Netherlands and Switzerland, we discover a wide range of strategies which aim to reconcile logic multiplicity in the specific case of NRS development. Such negotiation efforts can ultimately promote new work practices and forms of collaboration but may also have broader implications for the distribution of power and voice within news organisations

Surface Alfven Wave Damping in a 3D Simulation of the Solar Wind

Here we investigate the contribution of surface Alfven wave damping to the heating of the solar wind in minima conditions. These waves are present in regions of strong inhomogeneities in density or magnetic field (e. g., the border between open and closed magnetic field lines). Using a 3-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, we calculate the surface Alfven wave damping contribution between 1-4 solar radii, the region of interest for both acceleration and coronal heating. We consider waves with frequencies lower than those that are damped in the chromosphere and on the order of those dominating the heliosphere. In the region between open and closed field lines, within a few solar radii of the surface, no other major source of damping has been suggested for the low frequency waves we consider here. This work is the first to study surface Alfven waves in a 3D environment without assuming a priori a geometry of field lines or magnetic and density profiles. We determine that waves with frequencies >2.8x10^-4 Hz are damped between 1-4 solar radii. In quiet sun regions, surface Alfven waves are damped at further distances compared to active regions, thus carrying additional wave energy into the corona. We compare the surface Alfven wave contribution to the heating by a variable polytropic index and find that it an order of magnitude larger than needed for quiet sun regions. For active regions the contribution to the heating is twenty percent. As it has been argued that a variable gamma acts as turbulence, our results indicate that surface Alfven wave damping is comparable to turbulence in the lower corona. This damping mechanism should be included self consistently as an energy driver for the wind in global MHD models.Comment: Accepted to ApJ (scheduled September '09), 22 pages, 8 figure
