    LGBTQ+ and dental education: Analyzing the present and recommendations for the future

    LGBTQ+ populations constitute increasing proportions of children, adolescents, and adults in the United States. Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, this group suffers from health inequities, including oral health. The report “Oral Health: Advances and Challenges” identified the LGBTQ+ community as an underserved population which faces significant barriers in accessing oral health care. Coverage of LGBTQ+ topics in formal education settings in both dental schools and dental hygiene programs is scarce, which contributes to inequities within this group. Increasing curriculum content related to LGBTQ+ populations is of utmost importance to promote optimal patient-provider interactions while improving oral health outcomes. Ensuring equity in oral health care provision will require deliberate, consistent efforts on the part of all stakeholders. Dental and allied dental education programs have made important strides in enhancing equity and inclusion in their institutions by engaging campus groups that support LGBTQ+ populations, creating mentorship programs, and collaborating with non-profit advocacy groups. Such efforts have successfully empowered LGBTQ+ patients, providers, and allies who are committed to further closing the knowledge gap. Most of the research regarding LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts have been done in the medical arena and there is a void in the data available from the dental profession. To fill this void, recommendations are offered that institutions can easily implement to expand LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion visibility

    An Analysis of the Abstracts Presented at the Annual Meetings of the Society for Neuroscience from 2001 to 2006

    Annual meeting abstracts published by scientific societies often contain rich arrays of information that can be computationally mined and distilled to elucidate the state and dynamics of the subject field. We extracted and processed abstract data from the Society for Neuroscience (SFN) annual meeting abstracts during the period 2001–2006 in order to gain an objective view of contemporary neuroscience. An important first step in the process was the application of data cleaning and disambiguation methods to construct a unified database, since the data were too noisy to be of full utility in the raw form initially available. Using natural language processing, text mining, and other data analysis techniques, we then examined the demographics and structure of the scientific collaboration network, the dynamics of the field over time, major research trends, and the structure of the sources of research funding. Some interesting findings include a high geographical concentration of neuroscience research in the north eastern United States, a surprisingly large transient population (66% of the authors appear in only one out of the six studied years), the central role played by the study of neurodegenerative disorders in the neuroscience community, and an apparent growth of behavioral/systems neuroscience with a corresponding shrinkage of cellular/molecular neuroscience over the six year period. The results from this work will prove useful for scientists, policy makers, and funding agencies seeking to gain a complete and unbiased picture of the community structure and body of knowledge encapsulated by a specific scientific domain

    Differences in Cyclic Fatigue Resistance at Apical and Coronal Levels of Reciproc and WaveOne New Files

    Abstract Introduction: Recent improvements in alloys, kinematics, and concepts have been combined to increase the cyclic fatigue resistance of nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments. The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of new M-Wire reciprocating WaveOne (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and Reciproc (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) files at 2 levels. Methods: Sixty Reciproc and 60 WaveOne new files were fixed to a specifically designed device and tested in tempered steel canals with a 3-mm radius and a 60 angle of curvature. The motor used was programmed as defined by each manufacturer, and the specific reciprocating motion was followed. Thirty files of each brand were tested at 5 mm, and 30 were tested at 13 mm from their tips. The time to failure was registered. Weibull analysis was used to calculate the mean life, beta, and eta parameters. Results: The probability of the mean life was higher for Reciproc than WaveOne files at both levels, with the probability of the Reciproc mean life being 62% higher than that of WaveOne at 5 mm from the tip and 100% higher at 13 mm (all statistically significant). The probability of the mean life was higher at 5 mm than at 13 mm in both systems. The results may have been partially conditioned by the different motions that manufacturers propose for each system. Conclusions: Reciproc files were more resistant to cyclic fatigue than WaveOne files at both distances from the tip.     Radiation-induced Sarcoma in the Head and Neck: Clinical, Imaging, Histopathological, and Therapeutic Characterization

    Summary:. Radiation-induced head and neck sarcoma (RIHNS) is a rare and serious long-term complication of radiotherapy (RT), with poor prognosis and high morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis is based on immunohistochemistry and molecular biomarker analysis, and therapy is usually surgical. Other adjuvant therapies might be considered. This case report aimed to describe the clinical, imaging, histopathological, and therapeutic characteristics of a rare case of RIHNS in the mandible after 21 years of RT. A 68-year-old male patient underwent a partial left parotidectomy in 1995, was diagnosed with pleomorphic adenoma, and after recurrence of the lesion in 2000, underwent an ipsilateral total parotidectomy with adjuvant RT. In May 2021, he complained of an ulcerated nodular lesion on the tongue that extended toward the lower gingiva, associated with oral bleeding and difficulties with swallowing. After biopsy in the gingival margin and histopathological analysis, the diagnosis of high-grade spindle-cell sarcoma was established. Complete surgical resection with microsurgical reconstruction using a fibular osteomusculocutaneous free flap was performed. RIHNS could appear after a period of almost 20 years after RT. Surgical resection with reconstructive surgery was a reliable and feasible therapeutic option that showed favorable clinical results after an appropriate follow-up

    Recent Advances in Sugarcane Industry Solid By-Products Valorization

    Sugarcane is among the leading agricultural crop cultivated in tropical regions of the world. Industrial processing of sugarcane generates sugar; as well as various solid wastes (i.e. sugarcane bagasse, pressmud). Improvement of biotechnology in industrial level, offers opportunities for economic utilization of these solid residues. In the last few decades, sugarcane bagasse and pressmud have been explored in the theme of lignocellulosic bioconversion. The recalcitrance of biomass is a major drawback towards successful exploitation of lignocellulosic residues. Pretreatment by suitable/efficient processes can overcome this limitation. In this regards; physical, chemical and biological treatment systems are brought into our perspective. Chemical and physicochemical methods are capital-intensive but not environment-friendly, in contrast, method like biological treatment is eco-friendly but extremely slow. There are still major technological and economic challenges need to be addressed; e.g. bioprospecting, established more reliable genetically modified microorganisms, upgrade gene cloning and sequencing processes, yield improvement at large scale etc. Productions of value-added products from these solid wastes are discussed in such a way that pinpoints the most recent trends and the future directions. Biofuels, enzymes, organic acids and bio-sorbents production draw a clear sketch of the current and future bio-based products. Nano-biotechnology and genetic engineering could be future trends to improved processes and products. This review serves as a valuable reference material for a wide range of scientists and technologists in the relevant fields
