The Universal Phase Space of AdS3 Gravity
We describe what can be called the "universal" phase space of AdS3 gravity,
in which the moduli spaces of globally hyperbolic AdS spacetimes with compact
spatial sections, as well as the moduli spaces of multi-black-hole spacetimes
are realized as submanifolds. The universal phase space is parametrized by two
copies of the Universal Teichm\"uller space T(1) and is obtained from the
correspondence between maximal surfaces in AdS3 and quasisymmetric
homeomorphisms of the unit circle. We also relate our parametrization to the
Chern-Simons formulation of 2+1 gravity and, infinitesimally, to the
holographic (Fefferman-Graham) description. In particular, we obtain a relation
between the generators of quasiconformal deformations in each T(1) sector and
the chiral Brown-Henneaux vector fields. We also relate the charges arising in
the holographic description (such as the mass and angular momentum of an AdS3
spacetime) to the periods of the quadratic differentials arising via the Bers
embedding of T(1)xT(1). Our construction also yields a symplectic map from
T*T(1) to T(1)xT(1) generalizing the well-known Mess map in the compact spatial

Flux Compactifications on Calabi-Yau Threefolds
The presence of RR and NS three-form fluxes in type IIB string
compactification on a Calabi-Yau orientifold gives rise to a nontrivial
superpotential W for the dilaton and complex structure moduli. This
superpotential is computable in terms of the period integrals of the Calabi-Yau
manifold. In this paper, we present explicit examples of both supersymmetric
and nonsupersymmetric solutions to the resulting 4d N=1 supersymmetric no-scale
supergravity, including some nonsupersymmetric solutions with relatively small
values of W. Our examples arise on orientifolds of the hypersurfaces in
and . They serve as explicit

Roadwork:Expertise at work building roads in the Maldives
This article engages critically with concepts of ‘skill’, ‘expertise’, and ‘capacity’ as they operate as markers of distinction and domination and shape migratory labour relations among road construction workers from across South Asia in the Maldives archipelago. The article examines roadwork at three levels: the professional biographies leading to ‘flexible specialization’ rather than technical expertise amongst Maldivian managers; the technical expertise and social incorporation of ‘skilled’ Sri Lankan supervisors; and the key material expertise of ‘non-skilled’ Bangladeshi labourers in precarious employment. Whilst discussions of South Asian labour migration have been dominated by caste and class, this article argues that it is important to consider how the cultural production and understanding of concepts such as ‘expertise’, ‘capacity’, and ‘exposure’ at worksites can (also) become distinguishing factors in (hierarchical) migratory labour relations
Designing for Online Collaborative Consumption: A Study of Sociotechnical Gaps and Social Capital
This study attempts to investigate sociotechnical gaps in online collaborative consumption (OCC) to improve user experience andprovide better design requirements. A new approach is proposed to evaluate usability and sociability of the OCC communities. The formation of social capital within OCC will also be studied to gain insights into design requirements. Due to its features as a community where OCC takes place, ETSY will be the focus of this study
Association of C-reactive protein with bacterial and respiratory syncytial virus-associated pneumonia among children aged <5 years in the PERCH study
Background. Lack of a gold standard for identifying bacterial and viral etiologies of pneumonia has limited evaluation of C-reactive protein (CRP) for identifying bacterial pneumonia. We evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of CRP for identifying bacterial vs respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pneumonia in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) multicenter case-control study. Methods. We measured serum CRP levels in cases with World Health Organization-defined severe or very severe pneumonia and a subset of community controls. We evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of elevated CRP for "confirmed" bacterial pneumonia (positive blood culture or positive lung aspirate or pleural fluid culture or polymerase chain reaction [PCR]) compared to "RSV pneumonia" (nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal or induced sputum PCR-positive without confirmed/suspected bacterial pneumonia). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to assess the performance of elevated CRP in distinguishing these cases. Results. Among 601 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative tested controls, 3% had CRP ≥40 mg/L. Among 119 HIVnegative cases with confirmed bacterial pneumonia, 77% had CRP ≥40 mg/L compared with 17% of 556 RSV pneumonia cases. The ROC analysis produced an area under the curve of 0.87, indicating very good discrimination; a cut-point of 37.1 mg/L best discriminated confirmed bacterial pneumonia (sensitivity 77%) from RSV pneumonia (specificity 82%). CRP ≥100 mg/L substantially improved specificity over CRP ≥40 mg/L, though at a loss to sensitivity. Conclusions. Elevated CRP was positively associated with confirmed bacterial pneumonia and negatively associated with RSV pneumonia in PERCH. CRP may be useful for distinguishing bacterial from RSV-associated pneumonia, although its role in discriminating against other respiratory viral-associated pneumonia needs further study
Determinants of penetrance and variable expressivity in monogenic metabolic conditions across 77,184 exomes
Hundreds of thousands of genetic variants have been reported to cause severe monogenic diseases, but the probability that a variant carrier develops the disease (termed penetrance) is unknown for virtually all of them. Additionally, the clinical utility of common polygenetic variation remains uncertain. Using exome sequencing from 77,184 adult individuals (38,618 multi-ancestral individuals from a type 2 diabetes case-control study and 38,566 participants from the UK Biobank, for whom genotype array data were also available), we apply clinical standard-of-care gene variant curation for eight monogenic metabolic conditions. Rare variants causing monogenic diabetes and dyslipidemias display effect sizes significantly larger than the top 1% of the corresponding polygenic scores. Nevertheless, penetrance estimates for monogenic variant carriers average 60% or lower for most conditions. We assess epidemiologic and genetic factors contributing to risk prediction in monogenic variant carriers, demonstrating that inclusion of polygenic variation significantly improves biomarker estimation for two monogenic dyslipidemias
