3-D Perturbations in Conformal Turbulence
The effects of three-dimensional perturbations in two-dimensional turbulence
are investigated, through a conformal field theory approach. We compute scaling
exponents for the energy spectra of enstrophy and energy cascades, in a strong
coupling limit, and compare them to the values found in recent experiments. The
extension of unperturbed conformal turbulence to the present situation is
performed by means of a simple physical picture in which the existence of small
scale random forces is closely related to deviations of the exact

Laser ablation loading of a radiofrequency ion trap
The production of ions via laser ablation for the loading of radiofrequency
(RF) ion traps is investigated using a nitrogen laser with a maximum pulse
energy of 0.17 mJ and a peak intensity of about 250 MW/cm^2. A time-of-flight
mass spectrometer is used to measure the ion yield and the distribution of the
charge states. Singly charged ions of elements that are presently considered
for the use in optical clocks or quantum logic applications could be produced
from metallic samples at a rate of the order of magnitude 10^5 ions per pulse.
A linear Paul trap was loaded with Th+ ions produced by laser ablation. An
overall ion production and trapping efficiency of 10^-7 to 10^-6 was attained.
For ions injected individually, a dependence of the capture probability on the
phase of the RF field has been predicted. In the experiment this was not

A Study of the \eta \pi^{0} Spectrum and Search for a J^{PC} = 1^{-+} Exotic Meson
A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the of the system (where ) produced in the charge exchange reaction at an incident momentum of 18 GeV is presented as a function of
invariant mass, , and momentum transfer squared,
, from the incident to the outgoing system. , and waves were included in the PWA. The
and states are clearly observed in the overall
effective mass distribution as well as in the amplitudes associated with
wave and waves respectively after partial wave decomposition. The observed
distributions in moments (averages of spherical harmonics) were compared to the
results from the PWA and the two are consistent. The distribution in
for individual waves associated with natural and
unnatural parity exchange in the -channel are consistent with Regge
phenomenology. Of particular interest in this study is the wave since this
leads to an exotic for the system. A wave is
present in the data, however attempts to describe the mass dependence of the
amplitude and phase motion with respect to the wave as a Breit-Wigner
resonance are problematic. This has implications regarding the existence of a
reported exotic meson decaying into with a mass

Observation of a New J(PC)=1(+-) Isoscalar State in the Reaction Pi- Proton -> Omega Eta Neutron at 18 GeV/c
Results are presented on a partial wave analysis of the Omega Eta final state
produced in Pi- Proton interactions at 18 GeVc where Omega -> Pi+ Pi- Pi0, Pi0
-> 2 Gammas, and Eta -> 2 Gammas. We observe the previously unreported decay
mode Omega(1650) -> Omega Eta and a new 1(+-) meson state h1(1595) with a mass
M=1594(15)(+10)(-60) MeV/c^2 and a width Gamma=384(60)(+70)(-100) MeV/c^2. The

Towards a construction of inclusive collision cross-sections in the massless Nelson model
The conventional approach to the infrared problem in perturbative quantum
electrodynamics relies on the concept of inclusive collision cross-sections. A
non-perturbative variant of this notion was introduced in algebraic quantum
field theory. Relying on these insights, we take first steps towards a
non-perturbative construction of inclusive collision cross-sections in the
massless Nelson model. We show that our proposal is consistent with the
standard scattering theory in the absence of the infrared problem and discuss

Automatic regularization by quantization in reducible representations of CCR: Point-form quantum optics with classical sources
Electromagnetic fields are quantized in manifestly covariant way by means of
a class of reducible representations of CCR. transforms as a Hermitian
four-vector field in Minkowski four-position space (no change of gauge), but in
momentum space it splits into spin-1 massless photons (optics) and two massless
scalars (similar to dark matter). Unitary dynamics is given by point-form
interaction picture, with minimal-coupling Hamiltonian constructed from fields
that are free on the null-cone boundary of the Milne universe. SL(2,C)
transformations and dynamics are represented unitarily in positive-norm Hilbert
space describing four-dimensional oscillators. Vacuum is a Bose-Einstein
condensate of the -oscillator gas. Both the form of and its
transformation properties are determined by an analogue of the twistor
equation. The same equation guarantees that the subspace of vacuum states is,
as a whole, Poincar\'e invariant. The formalism is tested on quantum fields
produced by pointlike classical sources. Photon statistics is well defined even
for pointlike charges, with UV/IR regularizations occurring automatically as a
consequence of the formalism. The probabilities are not Poissonian but of a
R\'enyi type with . The average number of photons occurring in
Bremsstrahlung splits into two parts: The one due to acceleration, and the one
that remains nonzero even if motion is inertial. Classical Maxwell
electrodynamics is reconstructed from coherent-state averaged solutions of
Heisenberg equations. Static pointlike charges polarize vacuum and produce
effective charge densities and fields whose form is sensitive to both the

Local and global behaviour of nonlinear equations with natural growth terms
This paper concerns a study of the pointwise behaviour of positive solutions
to certain quasi-linear elliptic equations with natural growth terms, under
minimal regularity assumptions on the underlying coefficients. Our primary
results consist of optimal pointwise estimates for positive solutions of such
equations in terms of two local Wolff's potentials.Comment: In memory of Professor Nigel Kalto
Lattice calculation of hybrid mesons with improved Kogut-Susskind fermions
We report on a lattice determination of the mass of the exotic
hybrid meson using an improved Kogut-Susskind action. Results from both
quenched and dynamical quark simulations are presented. We also compare with
earlier results using Wilson quarks at heavier quark masses. The results on
lattices with three flavors of dynamical quarks show effects of sea quarks on
the hybrid propagators which probably result from coupling to two meson states.
We extrapolate the quenched results to the physical light quark mass to allow
comparison with experimental candidates for the hybrid meson. The
lattice result remains somewhat heavier than the experimental result, although

Observation of Pseudoscalar and Axial Vector Resonances in pi- p -> K+ K- pi0 n at 18 GeV
A new measurement of the reaction pi- p -> K+ K- pi0 n has been made at a
beam energy of 18 GeV. A partial wave analysis of the K+ K- pi0 system shows
evidence for three pseudoscalar resonances, eta(1295), eta(1416), and
eta(1485), as well as two axial vectors, f1(1285), and f1(1420). Their observed
masses, widths and decay properties are reported. No signal was observed for
C(1480), an IG J{PC} = 1+ 1{--} state previously reported in phi pi0 decay.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figs, to be submitted to Phys. Let
