Manifold dimension of a causal set: Tests in conformally flat spacetimes

This paper describes an approach that uses flat-spacetime dimension estimators to estimate the manifold dimension of causal sets that can be faithfully embedded into curved spacetimes. The approach is invariant under coarse graining and can be implemented independently of any specific curved spacetime. Results are given based on causal sets generated by random sprinklings into conformally flat spacetimes in 2, 3, and 4 dimensions, as well as one generated by a percolation dynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Noncommutative Geometry as a Regulator

We give a perturbative quantization of space-time R4R^4 in the case where the commutators Cμν=[Xμ,Xν]C^{{\mu}{\nu}}=[X^{\mu},X^{\nu}] of the underlying algebra generators are not central . We argue that this kind of quantum space-times can be used as regulators for quantum field theories . In particular we show in the case of the ϕ4{\phi}^4 theory that by choosing appropriately the commutators CμνC^{{\mu}{\nu}} we can remove all the infinities by reproducing all the counter terms . In other words the renormalized action on R4R^4 plus the counter terms can be rewritten as only a renormalized action on the quantum space-time QR4QR^4 . We conjecture therefore that renormalization of quantum field theory is equivalent to the quantization of the underlying space-time R4R^4 .Comment: Latex, 30 pages, no figures, typos corrected, references added . Substantial amount of rewriting of the last section . Final interesting remarks added at the end of the pape

Asian Childhoods: exploring the lifeworlds of students in contemporary Hong Kong

In this article, the authors discuss the findings of two surveys that were conducted with 10-year-old primary students and their parents in Hong Kong. They sought to gather empirical data about how the students spend their time in out-of-school contexts in order to interrogate the view that Asian students often spend much of their time studying, with little leisure time. The authors were concerned that there was an absence of empirical data on this topic. Increasingly, there is a recognition that Asian students perform well in high-stakes international tests, and a widely held view is that this is because they dedicate so much time to intensive academic study in contrast to their ‘Western’ counterparts. The social and cultural capital derived from doing well in school systems is an established feature of many global contexts. In the competitive environment that characterises education in Hong Kong, progression through the system is based solely on examination scores, and justified on the basis that this is both equitable and allows the best students to thrive. Tutorial schools that train attendees in the art of testing are multimillion-dollar industries – but who are the clients? In this article, the authors reveal that at 10 years of age, the out-of-school lives of the students surveyed contain many and varied activities. They attend school and, in out-of-school contexts, complete homework, participate in activities that both incorporate new media (for example, television and computers) and others (for example, indoor and outdoor play), and do not

The objective of this experiment was estimate sperm concentration of "dourado" (Salminus brasiliensis), "curimba" (Prochilodus lineatus), "jundiá" (Rhamdia quelen), "cascudo-preto" (Rhinelepis aspera) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by the method of spermatocrit. It was used 19, 58, 51, 43 and 85 brood fish of "dourado", "curimba", "jundia", "cascudo-preto" and Nile tilapia, respectively. Except for the Nile tilapia, the fishes were subjected to the hormonal induction process and then submitted to the semen collection. The measurement techniques of the sperm concentration by sperm count in Neubauer chamber (CSPZ) and by spermatocrit (ESPMT) were compared. The results were submitted to the regression analysis at 5% of probability. It was observed that the variables CSPZ and ESPMT presented linear relationship to the "curimba", "jundia" and Nile tilapia with equations y = 6.6624 × 10(9) + 368553 × 10(8)x; y = 2.153 × 10(9) + 4.426 × 10(8)x and y = -9.0897 × 10(8) + 6.0167 × 10(8), respectively. The method of spermatocrit can be used to estimate the sperm concentration of "curimba", "jundiá" and Nile tilapia
