    Numerical Investigation of Effect of Ring-Type Spacer Grid on the Thermal Hydraulics Aspects of 5 X 5 Rod Bundles

    AbstractThe fuel assemblies of the Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) are constituted of rod bundles set in a regular square configuration by spacer grids placed along its length. With the remarkable progress in the computer processing power, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology can be useful for investigating the thermal–hydraulic characteristics phenomena in the nuclear fuel assembly. A methodology for the simulation and analysis of single-phase coolant flows around one or a row of spacers is presented. It is based on the multidimensional single-fluid mass, momentum and energy balance equations and use of proper turbulence models. This investigation presents results of flow simulations performed with the CD-Adapco code Star-CCM+ in a PWR 5 X 5 rod bundle part with a ring type spacer grid.A typical k-ɛ model has been used as a turbulence model and the symmetry condition is set as boundary conditions. It is confirmed that the turbulence in the sub-channel is drastically promoted by spacer and mixing devices. However, their effects quickly decayed to a fully developed level after passing about 10 times the hydraulic diameter downstream of the spacer. The static pressure of the fluid in the flow direction drops rapidly, then in a very short distance rises up, followed by a decrease near to the linear slope downstream.     Objective: Exposure to tobacco smoke causes numerous health problems in children, and create burden on the population in terms of economy, morbidity and mortality. In order to protect the child from exposure to tobacco smoke in the outdoor environment, sufficient legislative enactments are available in Indian legislation. The objective of the present study is to investigate the fact that in absence of any specific laws stating about protection of children from exposure to tobacco smoke in indoor environment, whether outdoor related legislations are sufficient to protect children from exposureand to explore the scope for enforcement of both state and central laws in improving health of children in India. Study Design: The study considered cross-sectional survey data of Demographic and Health Survey Data on India, National Family and Health Survey fourth round (NFHS-4) for the year 2015-16 on Indian children (below age of four). Methods: Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the impact of anti-smoking laws on the prevalence of acute respiratory infection (ARI) based on the place of residence, indoor tobacco smoke exposure and age of the child. Results: The results have shown an inclination of ARI among children in association with states having single law, rural area resident, exposure to indoor tobacco smoke and age of the child, both as independent or in combination are quite conspicuous, and are found to be underestimated. The logistic regression also revealed the influence of these factors both as independent and even in interaction with other. Conclusions: Legislative intervention through both at central (or national)and state levels through anti-smoking laws will decrease the indoor tobacco smoke exposure as a result ARI prevalence will also decrease among children in India

    Effects of liraglutide on cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes patients with and without baseline metformin use: Post hoc analyses of the LEADER trial

    Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) reduce cardiovascular (CV) events among patients with type 2 diabetes and high CV risk. Because consensus professional society recommendations endorse metformin as the first-line medication for type 2 diabetes, the CV efficacy of GLP-1RAs has primarily been studied with background metformin therapy. However, the European Society of Cardiology now recommends GLP-1RAs as a first-line type 2 diabetes treatment for patients at high CV risk. These discordant recommendations raise the question of how background metformin might influence the CV benefits of GLP-1RAs. Using data from the LEADER trial,we sought to answer this question by exploring possible heterogeneity in the CV efficacy of liraglutide related to baseline metformin treatment

    Development of a versatile laboratory experiment to teach the metabolic transformation of hydrolysis

    In this paper we describe an easy, reliable, versatile and inexpensive laboratory experiment to teach the metabolic transformation of hydrolysis to Pharmacy students. The experiment does not require the sacrifice of any experimental animal, or any work with organs or tissues, and so can be implemented in a typical university chemistry laboratory. We used acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), hexyl salicylate (HS) and two enzymes, a lipase and an esterase. Since both ASS and HS liberate salicylic acid (SA) upon hydrolysis, students can evaluate the different enzymatic transformations by monitoring the amount of SA liberated. The learning outcomes are an enhanced student understanding of: (1) the process of hydrolysis; (2) the application of enzymatic transformations of molecules from food to xenobiotics; (3) the differences between the general specificity of substrate of both enzymes; (4) the concepts of the lipophilic pocket; (5) the catalytic triad and its regioselectivity in relation to the ester bond. A questionnaire was administered to participating students at three points in time: at the beginning of the module, after enzymatic hydrolysis was taught in class, and after the laboratory experiment. From an analysis of the questionnaire data we conclude that this practical helped Pharmacy students to understand these concepts

    Accelerating Bianchi Type-V Cosmology with Perfect Fluid and Heat Flow in Saez-Ballester Theory

    In this paper we discuss the law of variation of scale factor a=(tket)1na = (t^{k}e^{t})^{\frac{1}{n}} which yields a time-dependent deceleration parameter (DP) representing a new class of models that generate a transition of universe from the early decelerated phase to the recent accelerating phase. Exact solutions of Einstein's modified field equations with perfect fluid and heat conduction are obtained within the framework of Saez-Ballester scalar-tensor theory of gravitation and the model is found to be in good agreement with recent observations. We find, for n = 3, k = 1, the present value of DP in derived model as q_0 = -0.67 which is very near to the observed value of DP at present epoch. We find that the time-dependent DP is sensible for the present day Universe and give an earmark description of evolution of universe. Some physical and geometric properties of the models are also discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
