    Scaling in Late Stage Spinodal Decomposition with Quenched Disorder

    We study the late stages of spinodal decomposition in a Ginzburg-Landau mean field model with quenched disorder. Random spatial dependence in the coupling constants is introduced to model the quenched disorder. The effect of the disorder on the scaling of the structure factor and on the domain growth is investigated in both the zero temperature limit and at finite temperature. In particular, we find that at zero temperature the domain size, R(t)R(t), scales with the amplitude, AA, of the quenched disorder as R(t)=A−βf(t/A−γ)R(t) = A^{-\beta} f(t/A^{-\gamma}) with β≃1.0\beta \simeq 1.0 and γ≃3.0\gamma \simeq 3.0 in two dimensions. We show that β/γ=α\beta/\gamma = \alpha, where α\alpha is the Lifshitz-Slyosov exponent. At finite temperature, this simple scaling is not observed and we suggest that the scaling also depends on temperature and AA. We discuss these results in the context of Monte Carlo and cell dynamical models for phase separation in systems with quenched disorder, and propose that in a Monte Carlo simulation the concentration of impurities, cc, is related to AA by A∼c1/dA \sim c^{1/d}.Comment: RevTex manuscript 5 pages and 5 figures (obtained upon request via email [email protected]

    Vacancy-assisted domain-growth in asymmetric binary alloys: a Monte Carlo study

    A Monte Carlo simulation study of the vacancy-assisted domain-growth in asymmetric binary alloys is presented. The system is modeled using a three-state ABV Hamiltonian which includes an asymmetry term, not considered in previous works. Our simulated system is a stoichiometric two-dimensional binary alloy with a single vacancy which evolves according to the vacancy-atom exchange mechanism. We obtain that, compared to the symmetric case, the ordering process slows down dramatically. Concerning the asymptotic behavior it is algebraic and characterized by the Allen-Cahn growth exponent x=1/2. The late stages of the evolution are preceded by a transient regime strongly affected by both the temperature and the degree of asymmetry of the alloy.     Molecular dynamics simulations of phase separation in the presence of surfactants

    The dynamics of phase separation in two-dimensional binary mixtures diluted by surfactants is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. In contrast to pure binary systems, characterized by an algebraic time dependence of the average domain size, we find that systems containing surfactants exhibit nonalgebraic, slow dynamics. The average domain size eventually saturates at a value inversely proportional to the surfactant concentration. We also find that phase separation in systems with different surfactant concentrations follow a crossover scaling form. Finally, although these systems do not fully phase separate, we observe a dynamical scaling which is independent of the surfactant concentration. The results of these simulations are in general in agreement with previous Langevin simulations [Laradji, Guo, Grant, and Zuckermann, J. Phys. A 44, L629 (1991)] and a theory of Ostwald ripening [Yao and Laradji, Phys. Rev. E 47, 2695 (1993)]. © 1994 The American Physical Society

    First World Consensus Conference on pancreas transplantation: part II - recommendations

    The First World Consensus Conference on Pancreas Transplantation provided 49 jury deliberations regarding the impact of pancreas transplantation on the treatment of diabetic patients, and 110 experts' recommendations for the practice of pancreas transplantation. The main message from this consensus conference is that both simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK) and pancreas transplantation alone can improve long-term patient survival, and all types of pancreas transplantation dramatically improve the quality of life of recipients. Pancreas transplantation may also improve the course of chronic complications of diabetes, depending on their severity. Therefore, the advantages of pancreas transplantation appear to clearly surpass potential disadvantages. Pancreas after kidney transplantation increases the risk of mortality only in the early period after transplantation, but is associated with improved life expectancy thereafter. Additionally, preemptive SPK, when compared to SPK performed in patients undergoing dialysis, appears to be associated with improved outcomes. Time on dialysis has negative prognostic implications in SPK recipients. Increased long-term survival, improvement in the course of diabetic complications, and amelioration of quality of life justify preferential allocation of kidney grafts to SPK recipients.     Vehicle to vehicle communication outage and its impact on convoy driving

    Advanced vehicle control and safety systems are rapidly evolving around the globe, allowing the testing of convoying systems. A key element in such systems is the production of a reliable vehicle-to-vehicle communication link, capable of robust operation in a range of operating environments. This paper reports on a modelling study of one such system conducted as part of the Road Traffic Advisor project within the UK, based on a communication link in the millimetric waveband (approximately 60 GHz). The likely outage is examined for a basic inter-vehicle data link. This is used in conjunction with a simulation of convoy behaviour based on a control model to examine the effect of such outages on convoy operation. The paper concludes that the impact of the communication protocol and the communication outages on the control dynamics of an automated convoy would not degrade its performance<br/
