    Clarification versus Filtration of Milk

    Most of our modern plants employ some mechanical process for removing the foreign material from milk as it is received from the producer. The two types of equipment in general use are the filter and the clarifier, both of which have been considered successful in removing this material. The most important points for study seem to be the effect of clarification and filtration on quality of milk and the composition of the materials removed by each process. The principle of the centrifuge embodied in the clarifier would lead one to conclude that all matter of a specific gravity greater than milk would be removed by the clarifier. The filter on the other hand depends upon enmeshing solid particles in the fleecy surface of the filter cloth. Obviously the clarifier may remove semi-soluble material of smaller dimensions than the interstices in the filter, while the filter can only remove material which is too large to pass through the cloth. Whether the removal of this semi-soluble material is of importance or not should be indicated by the tests on keeping quality of the milk and also in the analysis of the material itself. A comparison of the two processes must not only consider the efficiency of sediment removal but also the composition of the material removed and the effect of the process upon the quality of milk. The study herein reported considers these points under conditions of actual plant practice

    A mathematical analysis of the evolution of perturbations in a modified Chaplygin gas model

    One approach in modern cosmology consists in supposing that dark matter and dark energy are different manifestations of a single `quartessential' fluid. Following such idea, this work presents a study of the evolution of perturbations of density in a flat cosmological model with a modified Chaplygin gas acting as a single component. Our goal is to obtain properties of the model which can be used to distinguish it from another cosmological models which have the same solutions for the general evolution of the scale factor of the universe, without the construction of the power spectrum. Our analytical results, which alone can be used to uniquely characterize the specific model studied in our work, show that the evolution of the density contrast can be seen, at least in one particular case, as composed by a spheroidal wave function. We also present a numerical analysis which clearly indicates as one interesting feature of the model the appearence of peaks in the evolution of the density constrast.Comment: 21 pages, accepted for publication in General Relativity and Gravitatio

    Although many concerns have been raised about methods of assessing outcomes in early childhood special education programs, professionals in the field are nevertheless faced with the need to select appropriate instruments for evaluating child and family outcomes as the result of intervention. A conference to address the current assessment needs of professionals was convened.     Social Support and Health: A Theoretical Formulation Derived from King's Conceptual Framework

    This article describes the development and initial empirical testing of a theoretical formulation of social support, family, health, and child health derived from Imogene King's conceptual framework for nursing. A correlational design was used to test the formulation with 103 families who have children with diabetes mellitus. Three hypotheses were sup ported : parents' social support had a direct and positive effect on family health, parents' social support and child's social support were positively related, and illness factors had a direct and negative effect on child health. Both the supported and unsupported hypotheses are discussed in terms of the present substantive knowledge base and evidence of validity for King's framework.     PIK3CA mutation in HPV-associated OPSCC patients receiving deintensified chemoradiation

    PIK3CA is the most frequently mutated gene in human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Prognostic implications of such mutations remain unknown. We sought to elucidate the clinical significance of PIK3CA mutations in HPV-associated OPSCC patients treated with definitive chemoradiation (CRT). Seventyseven patients with HPV-associated OPSCC were enrolled on two phase II clinical trials of deintensified CRT (60 Gy intensitymodulated radiotherapy with concurrent weekly cisplatin). Targeted next-generation sequencing was performed. Of the 77 patients, nine had disease recurrence (two regional, four distant, three regional and distant). Thirty-four patients had mutation( s) identified; 16 had PIK3CA mutations. Patients with wild-type-PIK3CA had statistically significantly higher 3-year disease-free survival than PIK3CA-mutant patients (93.4%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 85.0% to 99.9% vs 68.8%, 95% CI = 26.7% to 89.8%; P=.004). On multivariate analysis, PIK3CA mutation was the only variable statistically significantly associated with disease recurrence (hazard ratio = 5.71, 95% CI = 1.53 to 21.3; P=.01). PIK3CA mutation is associated with worse diseasefree survival in a prospective cohort of newly diagnosed HPV-associated OPSCC patients treated with deintensified CRT
