    Physical and emotional nourishment: Food as the embodied component of loving care of elderly family relatives

    Purpose This purpose of this study is to examine the fluidity of family life which continues to attract attention. This is increasingly significant for the intergenerational relationship between adult children and their elderly parents. Using practice theory, the aims are to understand the role of food in elderly families and explore how family practices are maintained when elderly transition into care. Design/methodology/approach A phenomenological research approach was used as the authors sought to build an understanding of the social interactions between family and their lifeworld. Findings This study extends theory on the relationship between the elderly parent and their family and explores through practice theory how families performed their love, how altered routines and long standing rituals provided structure to the elderly relatives and how care practices were negotiated as the elderly relatives transitioned from independence to dependence and towards care. A theoretical framework is introduced that provides guidance for the transition stages and the areas for negotiation. Research limitations/implications This research has implications for food manufacturers and marketers, as the demand for healthy food for the elderly is made more widely available, healthy and easy to prepare. The limitations of the research are due to the sample located in East Yorkshire only. Practical implications This research has implications for brand managers of food manufacturers and supermarkets that need to create product lines that target this segment by producing healthy, convenience food. Social implications It is also important for health and social care policy as the authors seek to understand the role of food, family and community and how policy can be devised to provide stability in this transitional and uncertain lifestage. Originality/value This research extends the body of literature on food and the family by focussing on the elderly cared for and their family. The authors show how food can be construed as loving care, and using practice theory, a theoretical framework is developed that can explain the transitions and how the family negotiates the stages from independence to dependence

    Calanoid copepod zooplankton density is positively associated with water residence time across the continental United States

    Inherent differences between naturally-formed lakes and human-made reservoirs may play an important role in shaping zooplankton community structure. For example, because many reservoirs are created by impounding and managing lotic systems for specific human purposes, zooplankton communities may be affected by factors that are unique to reservoirs, such as shorter water residence times and a reservoir's management regime, compared to natural lakes. However, the environmental factors that structure zooplankton communities in natural lakes vs. reservoirs may vary at the continental scale and remain largely unknown. We analyzed data from the 2007 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Lakes Assessment and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' National Inventory of Dams to compare large-bodied crustacean zooplankton communities (defined here as individuals retained by 0.243 mm mesh size) in natural lakes and reservoirs across the continental U.S. using multiple linear regressions and regression tree analyses. We found that large-bodied crustacean zooplankton density was overall higher in natural lakes compared to reservoirs when the effect of latitude was controlled. The difference between waterbody types was driven by calanoid copepods, which were also more likely to be dominant in the >0.243 mm zooplankton community in natural lakes than in reservoirs. Regression tree analyses revealed that water residence time was not a major driver of calanoid copepod density in natural lakes but was one of the most important drivers of calanoid copepod density in reservoirs, which had on average 0.5-year shorter water residence times than natural lakes. Reservoirs managed for purposes that resulted in shorter residence times (e.g., hydroelectric power) had lower zooplankton densities than reservoirs managed for purposes that resulted in longer residence times (e.g., irrigation). Consequently, our results indicate that water residence time may be an important characteristic driving differing large-bodied zooplankton dynamics between reservoirs and natural lakes.publishe

    Modeling competition, niche, and coexistence between an invasive and a native species in a two‐species metapopulation

    International audienceModeling the dynamics of competition and coexistence between species is cru-cial to predict long-term impacts of invasive species on their native congeners. However, natu-ral environments are often fragmented and variable in time and space. In such contexts,regional coexistence depends on complex interactions between competition, niche differentia-tion and stochastic colonization–extinction dynamics. Quantifying all these processes at land-scape scale has always been a challenge for ecologists. We propose a new statistical frameworkto evaluate metapopulation parameters (colonization and extinction) in a two-species systemand how they respond to environmental variables and interspecific competition. It requiresspatial surveys repeated in time, but does not assume demographic equilibrium. We apply thismodel to a long-term survey of two snails inhabiting a network of freshwater habitats in theWest Indies. We find evidence of reciprocal competition affecting colonization or extinctionrates, modulated by species-specific sensitivity to environmental variables. Simulations usingmodel estimates allow us to predict species dynamics and explore the role of various coexis-tence mechanisms described by metacommunity theory in our system. The two species are pre-dicted to stably coexist, because niche partitioning, source–sink dynamics and interspecificdifferences in extinction–colonization parameters all contribute to reduce the negative impactsof competition. However, none of these mechanisms is individually essential. Regional coexis-tence is primarily facilitated by transient co-occurrence of the two species within habitatpatches, a possibility generally not considered in theoretical metacommunity models.
