The Classical Analogue of CP-violation
The phenomenological features of the mixing in the neutral pseudoscalar
mesons K0-K0bar can be illustrated in the classical framework of mechanics and
by means of electromagnetic coupled circuits. The time-reversed not-invariant
processes and the related phenomenon of CP-nonconservation can be induced by
dissipative effects which yield a not vanishing imaginary part for the relevant
Hamiltonian. Thus, two coupled dissipative oscillators can resemble the
peculiar asymmetries which are so common in the realm of high energy particle

Sedimentology and facies analysis of ancient sand ridges: Jurassic Rogn Formation, TrĂžndelag Platform, offshore Norway
Sand ridges represent a common type of sedimentary bedform of modern shelves seldom used as analogues to interpret isolated marine sandbodies recognised in the subsurface. Lack of extended literature on outcrop and subsurface examples limits the possibility for their recognition and seems one of the reason behind this underrepresentation. The Draugen discovery made in the early 80's represents an unicum in the TrĂžndelag Platform, offshore Norway. After more than 30 years the Froan Basin and FrĂžya High area are still underexplored and the Late Jurassic Rogn Fm play not well understood. Predicting reservoir distribution, and its internal architecture and properties requires the understanding of factors controlling sedimentation (e.g. palaeocirculation, depositional processes). North-south elongated sandbodies pertaining to the Rogn Formation are recognised in the Froan Basin and FrĂžya High encased within thick shaly deposits. Sandbodies develop above a ravinement or flooding surface (i.e. Callovian Unconformity) of regional extent where local depressions occur with a non-erosional concave-up top. Depressions representing the depositional loci for the accumulation of sand and development of the ridge. The presence of eastward and westward dipping reflections within the sandbodies allows identifying their large-scale architectures. Sediments form coarsening-upward vertical units characterised by a shaly base evolving upwards to medium- and coarse-grained sand forming tabular and trough cross strata. Locally, a fining upward trend characterised by plane-parallel stratification and coarse-grained massive layers is recognised. Sediments results well organised and sorted, which positively affects final porosity and permeability with values up to 30% and 6 Darcy, respectively - typical values for many sand ridges. Accordingly, sand ridges encased within thick shaly deposits can form stratigraphic traps with the potential for large hydrocarbon accumulations. Scaling and correlations in the dynamics of forest-fire occurrence
Forest-fire waiting times, defined as the time between successive events
above a certain size in a given region, are calculated for Italy. The
probability densities of the waiting times are found to verify a scaling law,
despite that fact that the distribution of fire sizes is not a power law. The
meaning of such behavior in terms of the possible self-similarity of the
process in a nonstationary system is discussed. We find that the scaling law
arises as a consequence of the stationarity of fire sizes and the existence of
a non-trivial ``instantaneous'' scaling law, sustained by the correlations of

Desertification risk assessment in southern Mediterranean areas
International audienceThe paper deals some important aspects concerning the study of desertification phenomenon that has significantly interested all European countries of the Mediterranean basin in the last decades. The territorial sensibility, qualitatively and/or quantitatively, of the risk related to the desertification processes has been valued as grade of susceptibility to the phenomenon in the study area, with respect to the hydraulic and hydrologic conditioning factors. The methodological approach followed is based on the classification of desertification indicators by means of a suitable conceptual model applied to the study area in Basilicata region. The classical desertification indexes have been evaluate referring to the study area generating temporal informative map. To achieve such objective, the historical series of temperatures and rainfall of several gauge-stations have been analysed, and the first results show an increasing trend for the temperature in last years, according to the global scale. An increase of aridity and erosion index values is, also, outlined by the collected data with slight reductions at higher altitudes
Evolution of superconductivity by oxygen annealing in FeTe0.8S0.2
Oxygen annealing dramatically improved the superconducting properties of
solid-state-reacted FeTe0.8S0.2, which showed only a broad onset of
superconducting transition just after the synthesis. The zero resistivity
appeared and reached 8.5 K by the oxygen annealing at 200\degree C. The
superconducting volume fraction was also enhanced from 0 to almost 100%. The
lattice constants were compressed by the oxygen annealing, indicating that the
evolution of bulk superconductivity in FeTe0.8S0.2 was correlated to the

Benefits and medium-term outcome of the Sorin Pericarbon Freedom stentless aortic prosthesis in cases of acute bacterial endocarditis
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to evaluate the ease of use and the advantages of Sorin Pericarbon Freedom (SPF) stentless valve in cases of acute bacterial endocarditis and to check the intermediate-term results after the implant of SPF with respect to resistance to infection, valve deterioration and durability. METHODS Between June 2003 and February 2015, 26 patients with active aortic valve bacterial endocarditis underwent aortic valve replacement with SPF pericardial stentless aortic prosthesis. The mean age was 57 \ub1 18 years; 73% of the patients were in preoperative NYHA class III and VI. Mean Logistic EuroSCORE was 14.2 \ub1 12.7. Endocarditis occurred in 18 patients with native valves, and in 9 patients with prosthetic valves (4 mechanical aortic valve prostheses; 5 aortic bioprostheses). Aortic root abscesses were observed in 16 cases (61.5%). Surgery was emergent in 3 cases (11.5%). Redo surgery was performed in 9 cases (35%). Cumulative follow-up was 126.8 patient-years (mean 4.9 \ub1 3.3 years). RESULTS Operative hospital mortality was 0% for all patients. Residual mean prosthetic gradient at discharge was 9.4 \ub1 3.6 mmHg. Neither residual aortic incompetence nor residual abscess cavity was observed at discharge. Mean ejection fraction at discharge was 54 \ub1 8% (Min; Max: 35%; 65%). A total of 4 patients died at follow-up, all for non-cardiac causes. One patient was lost to follow-up. Two patients (8%) underwent non-valve-related reoperation with 0% mortality. Residual mean gradient at follow-up was 7.2 \ub1 2.1 mmHg. Three patients (17%) presented with mild/moderate aortic incompetence and 89% of patients were in NYHA Class I-II at follow-up. At 9 years, actuarial freedom from valve-related reoperation and from structural valve deterioration was 100%. CONCLUSIONS The SPF aortic prosthesis is a true pericardial stentless prosthesis suitable for the treatment of acute bacterial endocarditis. Intermediate-time results in terms of freedom from reoperation, structural valve deterioration and resistance to infections are satisfactory. Haemodynamic performances are excellent since a complete exclusion of aortic root abscesses is achieved without any reduction of the aortic annular diameter, usually due to marsupialization or patch closure of the infected cavities
Analytic approach to stochastic cellular automata: exponential and inverse power distributions out of Random Domino Automaton
Inspired by extremely simplified view of the earthquakes we propose the
stochastic domino cellular automaton model exhibiting avalanches. From
elementary combinatorial arguments we derive a set of nonlinear equations
describing the automaton. Exact relations between the average parameters of the
model are presented. Depending on imposed triggering, the model reproduces both

Sudden drop of fractal dimension of electromagnetic emissions recorded prior to significant earthquake
The variation of fractal dimension and entropy during a damage evolution
process, especially approaching critical failure, has been recently
investigated. A sudden drop of fractal dimension has been proposed as a
quantitative indicator of damage localization or a likely precursor of an
impending catastrophic failure. In this contribution, electromagnetic emissions
recorded prior to significant earthquake are analysed to investigate whether
they also present such sudden fractal dimension and entropy drops as the main
catastrophic event is approaching. The pre-earthquake electromagnetic time
series analysis results reveal a good agreement to the theoretically expected
ones indicating that the critical fracture is approaching
Breast tumor cell invasion and pro-invasive activity of cancer-associated fibroblasts co-targeted by novel urokinase-derived decapeptides
Among peritumoral cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are major facilitators of tumor progression. This study describes the effects of two urokinase-derived, novel decapeptides, denoted as Pep 1 and its cyclic derivative Pep 2. In a mouse model of tumor dissemination, using HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells, Pep 2 reduced the number and size of lung metastases. Specific binding of fluoresceinated Pep 2 to HT1080 and telomerase immortalised fibroblasts (TIF) cell surfaces was enhanced by αv overexpression or abolished by excess vitronectin, anti-αv antibodies or silencing of ITGAV αv gene, identifying αv-integrin as the Pep 2 molecular target. In 3D-organotypic assays, peptide-exposed TIFs and primary CAFs from breast carcinoma patients both exhibited a markedly reduced pro-invasive ability of either HT1080 fibrosarcoma or MDA-MB-231 mammary carcinoma cells, respectively. Furthermore, TIFs, either exposed to Pep 2, or silenced for αv integrin, were impaired in their ability to chemoattract cancer cells and to contract collagen matrices, exhibiting reduced α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) levels. Finally, peptide exposure of αv-expressing primary CAFs led to the downregulation of α-SMA protein and to a dramatic reduction of their pro-invasive capability. In conclusion, the ability of the novel decapeptides to interfere with tumor cell invasion directly and through the down-modulation of CAF phenotype suggests their use as lead compounds for co-targeting anti-cancer strategies
