Self similar Barkhausen noise in magnetic domain wall motion
A model for domain wall motion in ferromagnets is analyzed. Long-range
magnetic dipolar interactions are shown to give rise to self-similar dynamics
when the external magnetic field is increased adiabatically. The power spectrum
of the resultant Barkhausen noise is of the form , where
can be estimated from the critical exponents for interface
depinning in random media.Comment: 7 pages, RevTex. To appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Distinguishing black holes from naked singularities through their accretion disk properties
We show that, in principle, a slowly evolving gravitationally collapsing perfect fluid cloud can asymptotically settle to a static spherically symmetric equilibrium configuration with a naked singularity at the center. We consider one such asymptotic final configuration with a finite outer radius, and construct a toy model in which it is matched to a Schwarzschild exterior geometry. We examine the properties of circular orbits in this model.
We then investigate observational signatures of a thermal accretion disk in this spacetime, comparing them with
the signatures expected for a disk around a black hole of the same mass. Several notable differences emerge.
A disk around the naked singularity is much more luminous than one around an equivalent black hole. Also,
the disk around the naked singularity has a spectrum with a high frequency power law segment that carries a
major fraction of the total luminosity. Thus, at least some naked singularities can, in principle, be distinguished
observationally from black holes of the same mass. We discuss possible implications of these results
Equilibrium configurations from gravitational collapse
We develop here a new procedure within Einstein’s theory of gravity to generate equilibrium configurations that result as the final state of gravitational collapse from regular initial conditions. As a simplification, we assume that the collapsing fluid is supported only by tangential pressure. We show that the equilibrium geometries
generated by this method form a subset of static solutions to the Einstein equations, and that they can either be regular or develop a naked singularity at the center. When a singularity is present, there are key differences in the properties of stable circular orbits relative to those around a Schwarzschild black hole with the same mass. Therefore, if an accretion disk is present around such a naked singularity it could be observationally
distinguished from a disk around a black hole
Nonequilibrium steady states in a vibrated-rod monolayer: tetratic, nematic and smectic correlations
We study experimentally the nonequilibrium phase behaviour of a horizontal
monolayer of macroscopic rods. The motion of the rods in two dimensions is
driven by vibrations in the vertical direction. Aside from the control
variables of packing fraction and aspect ratio that are typically explored in
molecular liquid crystalline systems, due to the macroscopic size of the
particles we are also able to investigate the effect of the precise shape of
the particle on the steady states of this driven system. We find that the shape
plays an important role in determining the nature of the orientational ordering
at high packing fraction. Cylindrical particles show substantial tetratic
correlations over a range of aspect ratios where spherocylinders have
previously been shown by Bates et al (JCP 112, 10034 (2000)) to undergo
transitions between isotropic and nematic phases. Particles that are thinner at
the ends (rolling pins or bails) show nematic ordering over the same range of
aspect ratios, with a well-established nematic phase at large aspect ratio and
a defect-ridden nematic state with large-scale swirling motion at small aspect
ratios. Finally, long-grain, basmati rice, whose geometry is intermediate
between the two shapes above, shows phases with strong indications of smectic
order.Comment: 18 pages and 13 eps figures, references adde
Some aspects of freezing and frozen storage of pomfrets
It has been observed that a better frozen product can be obtained by freezing good quality pomfrets transported in insulated containers with sufficient quantity of ice. To enhance the keeping quality and to prevent dehydration and discoloration, a dip in B H A (0.005%) for 15 minutes and subsequent storage in polythene lined gunny bag at -15°c to -I8°c can be recommended. The products treated in the above manner can be stored well over six months. Periodical glazing at an interval of 3 weeks will also prevent the dehydration to a greater extent
Collective Transport in Arrays of Quantum Dots
(WORDS: QUANTUM DOTS, COLLECTIVE TRANSPORT, PHYSICAL EXAMPLE OF KPZ)
Collective charge transport is studied in one- and two-dimensional arrays of
small normal-metal dots separated by tunnel barriers. At temperatures well
below the charging energy of a dot, disorder leads to a threshold for
conduction which grows linearly with the size of the array. For short-ranged
interactions, one of the correlation length exponents near threshold is found
from a novel argument based on interface growth. The dynamical exponent for the
current above threshold is also predicted analytically, and the requirements
for its experimental observation are described.Comment: 12 pages, 3 postscript files included, REVTEX v2, (also available by

Solar Neutrinos and the Eclipse Effect
The solar neutrino counting rate in a real time detector like
Super--Kamiokanda, SNO, or Borexino is enhanced due to neutrino oscillations in
the Moon during a partial or total solar eclipse. The enhancement is calculated
as a function of the neutrino parameters in the case of three flavor mixing.
This enhancement, if seen, can further help to determine the neutrino
parameters.Comment: 24 Pages Revtex, 8 figures as one ps file. To appear in Phys. Rev. D;

Vertically Self-Gravitating ADAFs in the Presence of Toroidal Magnetic Field
Force due to the self-gravity of the disc in the vertical direction is
considered to study its possible effects on the structure of a magnetized
advection-dominated accretion disc. We present steady-sate self similar
solutions for the dynamical structure of such a type of the accretion flows.
Our solutions imply reduced thickness of the disc because of the self-gravity.
It also imply that the thickness of the disc will increase by adding the
magnetic field strength.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science
