Holography of Wilson-Loop Expectation Values with Local Operator Insertions
We study the expectation values of Wilson-loop operators with the
insertionsof local operators Z^J and Zbar^J with large R-charge J from the bulk
viewpoint of AdS/CFT correspondence. Classical solutions of strings attached to
such deformed Wilson loops at the conformal boundary are constructed and are
applied to the computation of Wilson-loop expectation values. We argue that in
order to have such solutions for general insertions at finite positions in the
base spacetime of the gauge theory, it is crucial to interpret the holographic
correspondence in the semi-classical picture as a tunneling phenomenon, as has
been previously established for holographic computations of correlators of BMN
operators. This also requires to use the Euclideanized AdS background and
Euclidean super Yang-Mills theory.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, version to be published in JHEP, no change from

Analysis of scale-free networks based on a threshold graph with intrinsic vertex weights
Many real networks are complex and have power-law vertex degree distribution,
short diameter, and high clustering. We analyze the network model based on
thresholding of the summed vertex weights, which belongs to the class of
networks proposed by Caldarelli et al. (2002). Power-law degree distributions,
particularly with the dynamically stable scaling exponent 2, realistic
clustering, and short path lengths are produced for many types of weight
distributions. Thresholding mechanisms can underlie a family of real complex
networks that is characterized by cooperativeness and the baseline scaling
exponent 2. It contrasts with the class of growth models with preferential
attachment, which is marked by competitiveness and baseline scaling exponent 3.Comment: 5 figure
Fundamental Vibrational Transitions of HCl Detected in CRL 2136
We would like to understand the chemistry of dense clouds and their hot cores
more quantitatively by obtaining more complete knowledge of the chemical
species present in them. We have obtained high-resolution infrared absorption
spectroscopy at 3-4 um toward the bright infrared source CRL 2136. The
fundamental vibration-rotation band of HCl has been detected within a dense
cloud for the first time. The HCl is probably located in the warm compact
circumstellar envelope or disk of CRL 2136. The fractional abundance of HCl is
(4.9-8.7)e-8, indicating that approximately 20 % of the elemental chlorine is
in gaseous HCl. The kinetic temperature of the absorbing gas is 250 K, half the
value determined from infrared spectroscopy of 13CO and water. The percentage
of chlorine in HCl is approximately that expected for gas at this temperature.
The reason for the difference in temperatures between the various molecular
species is unknown.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, A&A in pres
The first frost in the Pipe Nebula
Spectroscopic studies of ices in nearby star-forming regions indicate that
ice mantles form on dust grains in two distinct steps, starting with polar ice
formation (H2O rich) and switching to apolar ice (CO rich). We test how well
the picture applies to more diffuse and quiescent clouds where the formation of
the first layers of ice mantles can be witnessed. Medium-resolution
near-infrared spectra are obtained toward background field stars behind the
Pipe Nebula. The water ice absorption is positively detected at 3.0 micron in
seven lines of sight out of 21 sources for which observed spectra are
successfully reduced. The peak optical depth of the water ice is significantly
lower than those in Taurus with the same visual extinction. The source with the
highest water-ice optical depth shows CO ice absorption at 4.7 micron as well.
The fractional abundance of CO ice with respect to water ice is 16+7-6 %, and
about half as much as the values typically seen in low-mass star-forming
regions. A small fractional abundance of CO ice is consistent with some of the
existing simulations. Observations of CO2 ice in the early diffuse phase of a
cloud play a decisive role in understanding the switching mechanism between
polar and apolar ice formation.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, accepted by A&
Quantum states and linear response in dc and electromagnetic fields for charge current and spin polarization of electrons at Bi/Si interface with giant spin-orbit coupling
An expansion of the nearly free-electron model constructed by Frantzeskakis,
Pons and Grioni [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 82}, 085440 (2010)] describing quantum
states at Bi/Si(111) interface with giant spin-orbit coupling is developed and
applied for the band structure and spin polarization calculation, as well as
for the linear response analysis for charge current and induced spin caused by
dc field and by electromagnetic radiation. It is found that the large
spin-orbit coupling in this system may allow resolving the spin-dependent
properties even at room temperature and at realistic collision rate. The
geometry of the atomic lattice combined with spin-orbit coupling leads to an
anisotropic response both for current and spin components related to the
orientation of the external field. The in-plane dc electric field produces only
the in-plane components of spin in the sample while both the in-plane and
out-of-plane spin components can be excited by normally propagating
electromagnetic wave with different polarizations.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
RF amplification property of the MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction using field-induced ferromagnetic resonance
The radio-frequency (RF) voltage amplification property of a tunnel
magnetoresistance device driven by an RF external-magnetic-field-induced
ferromagnetic resonance was studied. The proposed device consists of a magnetic
tunnel junction (MTJ) and an electrically isolated coplanar waveguide. The
input RF voltage applied to the waveguide can excite the resonant dynamics in
the free layer magnetization, leading to the generation of an output RF voltage
under a DC bias current. The dependences of the RF voltage gain on the static
external magnetic field strength and angle were systematically investigated.
The design principles for the enhancement of the gain factor are also
discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
A remark on the Hankel determinant formula for solutions of the Toda equation
We consider the Hankel determinant formula of the functions of the
Toda equation. We present a relationship between the determinant formula and
the auxiliary linear problem, which is characterized by a compact formula for
the functions in the framework of the KP theory. Similar phenomena that
have been observed for the Painlev\'e II and IV equations are recovered. The
case of finite lattice is also discussed.Comment: 14 pages, IOP styl
Symmetry and Integrability of Non-Singlet Sectors in Matrix Quantum Mechanics
We study the non-singlet sectors of matrix quantum mechanics (MQM) through an
operator algebra which generates the spectrum. The algebra is a nonlinear
extension of the W_\infty algebra where the nonlinearity comes from the angular
part of the matrix which can not be neglected in the non-singlet sector. The
algebra contains an infinite set of commuting generators which can be regarded
as the conserved currents of MQM. We derive the spectrum and the eigenfunctions
of these conserved quantities by a group theoretical method. An interesting
feature of the spectrum of these charges in the non-singlet sectors is that
they are identical to those of the singlet sector except for the
multiplicities. We also derive the explicit form of these commuting charges in
terms of the eigenvalues of the matrix and show that the interaction terms
which are typical in Calogero-Sutherland system appear. Finally we discuss the
bosonization and rewrite the commuting charges in terms of a free boson
together with a finite number of extra degrees of freedom for the non-singlet
sectors.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figure
