    Nonelastic nuclear reactions and accompanying gamma radiation

    Several aspects of nonelastic nuclear reactions which proceed through the formation of a compound nucleus are dealt with. The full statistical model and the partial statistical model are described and computer programs based on these models are presented along with operating instructions and input and output for sample problems. A theoretical development of the expression for the reaction cross section for the hybrid case which involves a combination of the continuum aspects of the full statistical model with the discrete level aspects of the partial statistical model is presented. Cross sections for level excitation and gamma production by neutron inelastic scattering from the nuclei Al-27, Fe-56, Si-28, and Pb-208 are calculated and compared with avaliable experimental data

    A number of different conjunction assessment (CA) risk analysis methods and metrics have been proposed in the critical literature, and they vary widely in purport and form. However, they tend to be proposed individually and episodically, so that it is difficult for a CA practitioner to take stock of the possibilities, under- stand their fundamental differences, and make informed choices for their particular CA risk assessment enterprise. The present study seeks to collect the major proposals for risk assessment methods and parameters and organize them categorically, under the proposed divisions of probability, plausibility, and possibility, as well as formulate what appears for each to be its fundamental question and, where applicable, null hypothesis. This activity can, through a bottom-up approach, provide some of the building blocks for an overarching CA philosophy, as well as establish concepts and terminology potentially useful to the broader discussion of these topics

    The Abundance of Interstellar Fluorine and Its Implications

    We report results from a survey of neutral fluorine (F I) in the interstellar medium. Data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) were used to analyze 26 lines of sight lying both in the galactic disk and halo, including lines to Wolf-Rayet stars and through known supernova remnants. The equivalent widths of fluorine resonance lines at 951.871 A and 954.827 A were measured or assigned upper limits and combined with a nitrogen curve of growth to obtain F I column densities. These column densities were then used to calculate fluorine depletions. Comparisons are made to the previous study of F I by Federman et al.     Precision determination of absolute neutron flux

    A technique for establishing the total neutron rate of a highly-collimated monochromatic cold neutron beam was demonstrated using a method of an alpha-gamma counter. The method involves only the counting of measured rates and is independent of neutron cross sections, decay chain branching ratios, and neutron beam energy. For the measurement, a target of 10B-enriched boron carbide totally absorbed the neutrons in a monochromatic beam, and the rate of absorbed neutrons was determined by counting 478keV gamma rays from neutron capture on 10B with calibrated high-purity germanium detectors. A second measurement based on Bragg diffraction from a perfect silicon crystal was performed to determine the mean de Broglie wavelength of the beam to a precision of 0.024 %. With these measurements, the detection efficiency of a neutron monitor based on neutron absorption on 6Li was determined to an overall uncertainty of 0.058 %. We discuss the principle of the alpha-gamma method and present details of how the measurement was performed including the systematic effects. We also describe how this method may be used for applications in neutron dosimetry and metrology, fundamental neutron physics, and neutron cross section measurements.Comment: 44 page

    Virtual Reality combined with Robotic facilitated movements for pain management and sensory stimulation of the upper limb following a Brachial Plexus injury: A case study

    Brachial Plexus injuries are complex in nature caused in large by high impact traffic accidents which can lead to additional complications such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and even lead to amputation or the need for further surgical intervention. Treatment options to help repair the brachial plexus initially involve surgical intervention and post-surgery rehabilitation with medication to help with ongoing pain. Pain treatments used for these types of injuries are limited and differ in effectiveness. Paradigms utilising multimodal systems such as the one described in this paper based on virtual reality and robotics could yield results that are non-invasive and provide better rehabilitation outcomes for the sufferers. In this paper we present a single case study exploring whether Virtual Reality plus Haptic feedback have any practical potential for reducing upper limb pain and improving function in patients with brachial plexus injuries. The case study is presented with long standing complex combination of phantom limb and neuropathic pain. A decrease in perceived levels of pain was reported which amounts to a 50% reduction in pain from baseline and an improved range of motion. An examination of the sensory phantom map on the stump seems to indicate an early establishment of the thumb representation on the stump close to the area being stimulated with potential implications for prosthesis use
