Generation of Closed Timelike Curves with Rotating Superconductors
The spacetime metric around a rotating SuperConductive Ring (SCR) is deduced
from the gravitomagnetic London moment in rotating superconductors. It is shown
that theoretically it is possible to generate Closed Timelike Curves (CTC) with
rotating SCRs. The possibility to use these CTC's to travel in time as
initially idealized by G\"{o}del is investigated. It is shown however, that
from a technology and experimental point of view these ideas are impossible to

The research-teaching nexus from the Portuguese academics’ perspective: a qualitative case study in a school of social sciences and humanities
This paper reports on a study conducted as part of an action-research project—INTEGRA I&E—aiming to promote the research and teaching (R&T) nexus at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of a Research University in Lisbon, Portugal (Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, ISCTE-IUL). This study set out to investigate a multi-informant perspective of the academics’ rhetoric (conceptions, perception of barriers/facilitators and consequences) concerning the nexus, which can be considered at different levels of the curricular and organizational structure. Focus groups were conducted with 26 professors and 8 researchers from six different disciplinary areas and, afterwards, recorded and transcribed. A content analysis was used to categorize and quantify participants’ responses. Four themes emerged: practices linking R&T, barriers, facilitators and consequences of the nexus. Different levels of analysis were identified for each theme, namely, the level of ISCTE-IUL, Research Centers, Departments, Courses and Classes. Some disciplinary differences were also encountered. Oscillatons revisited
In this paper, we study some interesting properties of a spherically
symmetric oscillating soliton star made of a real time-dependent scalar field
which is called an oscillaton. The known final configuration of an oscillaton
consists of a stationary stage in which the scalar field and the metric
coefficients oscillate in time if the scalar potential is quadratic. The
differential equations that arise in the simplest approximation, that of
coherent scalar oscillations, are presented for a quadratic scalar potential.
This allows us to take a closer look at the interesting properties of these
oscillating objects. The leading terms of the solutions considering a quartic
and a cosh scalar potentials are worked in the so called stationary limit
procedure. This procedure reveals the form in which oscillatons and boson stars
may be related and useful information about oscillatons is obtained from the
known results of boson stars. Oscillatons could compete with boson stars as
interesting astrophysical objects, since they would be predicted by scalar

Stock market series analysis using self-organizing maps
In this work a new clustering technique is implemented and tested. The proposed approach is based on the application of a SOM (self-organizing map) neural network and provides means to cluster U-MAT aggregated data. It relies on a flooding algorithm operating on the U-MAT and resorts to the Calinski and Harabask index to assess the depth of flooding, providing an adequate number of clusters. The method is tuned for the analysis of stock market series. Results obtained are promising although limited in scope. Neste trabalho é implementada e testada uma nova técnica de agrupamento. A abordagem proposta baseia-se na aplicação de uma rede neuronal SOM (mapa autoorganizado) e permite agrupar dados sobre a matriz de distancias (U-MAT). É utilizado um algoritmo de alagamento ("flooding") sobre a U-MAT e o índice de Calinski e Harabasz avalia a profundidade do alagamento determinando-se, assim, o número de grupos mais adequado. O método é desenhado especificamente para a análise de séries temporais da bolsa de valores. Os resultados obtidos são promissores, embora se registem ainda limitações
Quintessence and Scalar Dark Matter in the Universe
Continuing with previous works, we present a cosmological model in which dark
matter and dark energy are modeled by scalar fields and ,
respectively, endowed with the scalar potentials and . This model contains 95% of
scalar field. We obtain that the scalar dark matter mass is The solution obtained allows us to recover the success of the
standard CDM. The implications on the formation of structure are reviewed. We

Quantum mechanical counterpart of nonlinear optics
Raman-type laser excitation of a trapped atom allows one to realize the
quantum mechanical counterpart of phenomena of nonlinear optics, such as
Kerr-type nonlinearities, parametric amplification, and multi-mode mixing.
Additionally, huge nonlinearities emerge from the interference of the atomic
wave function with the laser waves. They lead to a partitioning of the phase
space accompanied by a significantly different action of the time evolution in
neighboring phase-space zones. For example, a nonlinearly modified coherent
"displacement" of the motional quantum state may induce strong amplitude

Mg(, )Na reaction study for spectroscopy of Na
The Mg(, )Na reaction was measured at the Holifield
Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in order to
better constrain spins and parities of energy levels in Na for the
astrophysically important F()Ne reaction rate
calculation. 31 MeV proton beams from the 25-MV tandem accelerator and enriched
Mg solid targets were used. Recoiling He particles from the
Mg(, )Na reaction were detected by a highly segmented
silicon detector array which measured the yields of He particles over a
range of angles simultaneously. A new level at 6661 5 keV was observed in
the present work. The extracted angular distributions for the first four levels
of Na and Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) calculations were

Back reaction of a long range force on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background
It is possible that there may exist long-range forces in addition to gravity.
In this paper we construct a simple model for such a force based on exchange of
a massless scalar field and analyze its effect on the evolution of a
homogeneous Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. The presence of such an
interaction leads to an equation of state characterized by positive pressure
and to resonant particle production similar to that observed in preheating

We investigate the hypothesis that the scalar field is the dark matter and
the dark energy in the Cosmos, wich comprises about 95% of the matter of the
Universe. We show that this hypothesis explains quite well the recent

Spherical Scalar Field Halo in Galaxies
We study a spherically symmetric fluctuation of scalar dark matter in the
cosmos and show that it could be the dark matter in galaxies, provided that the
scalar field has an exponential potential whose overall sign is negative and
whose exponent is constrained observationally by the rotation velocities of
galaxies. The local space-time of the fluctuation contains a three dimensional
