Extraordinary magnetooptical effects and transmission through the metal-dielectric plasmonic systems

We report on significant enhancement of the magnetooptical effects in gyrotropic systems of a metallic film perforated by subwavelength hole arrays and a uniform dielectric film magnetized perpendicular to its plane. Calculations, based on a rigorous coupled-wave analysis, demonstrate the Faraday and Kerr effect spectra having several resonance peaks in the near infrared range, some of them coinciding with transmittance peaks. Qualitative analysis revealed that magnetic polaritons being coupled magnetic-film waveguiding modes with surface plasmons play a crucial role in the observed effect.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Unknowns in the Chemistry of boron

Structural links between benzenoid aromatics and graphite as well as saturated hydrocarbons and diamond are seen in high school text books. A similar understanding is only beginning to emerge in the chemistry of boron. Unlike benzenoid aromatics where the condensation is usually by edge-sharing, there are several ways of condensing polyhedral boranes. These include edge-sharing, triangular face sharing, four atom sharing and a single atom sharing. An electron counting mno rule similar to the Huckel 4n + 2 π electron counting rule will be presented for mono and condensed polyhedral boranes. Application of this rule shows that the structural details of β-rhombohedral boron, such as the vacancies and extra occupancies in the unit cell are a consequence of the electronic requirements rather than defects in the structure. While this is the beginning of a general understanding, there is a long way to go before the quantitative details emerge in this area, along with the synthesis and chemistry of a variety of condensed boranes. These ideas also provide a relationship between boron and fullerenes. Further, designing stable boron-rich candidates for physiological applications and materials for use in extreme conditions are areas that are waiting to be explored

BER Analysis of Full Duplex Relay assisted BPSK-SIM based VLC System for Indoor Applications

This paper contemplates a relay-assisted visible light communication (VLC) system, where the light source (Table lamp) acts as a relay node and cooperates with the main light source. Following the IEEE 802.15.7r1 VLC reference channel model, we assume that there are two different light sources present in an office room. The first one is the source terminal present on the ceiling and another one is the desk lamp that serves as the relay station which works in full-duplex method. Because of the loop interference channel, we model VLC relay terminal using ray tracing simulations. We have analyzed bit error rate (BER) performance of the relay-assisted VLC system using binary phase shift keying-subcarrier intensity modulation (BPSK-SIM) technique. The proposed method outperforms existing phase shift keying (PSK) and square M-quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) techniques. The proposed VLC system using BPSK-SIM technique achieves a BER performance of for an SNR of 20 dB. The results of proposed full duplex and half duplex relayed VLC system are evaluated using equal power allocation (EPA) and optimum power allocations (OPA) techniques over three different modulation schemes which are 2-PSK, square M-QAM, BPSK-SIM

Spontaneous emission of an atom placed near a nanobelt of elliptical cross-section

Spontaneous emission of an atom (molecule) placed near a nanocylinder of elliptical cross-section of an arbitrary composition is studied. The analytical expressions have been obtained for the radiative and nonradiative channels of spontaneous decay and investigated in details.Comment: 35 pages, 11 figure

Behaviour of Magnetic Tubes in Neutron Star's Interior

It is found from Maxwell's equations that the magnetic field lines are good analogues of relativistic strings. It is shown that the super-conducting current in the neutron star's interior causes local rotation of magnetic flux tubes carrying quantized flux.Comment: 6 pages, no figure

    Monopole Vacuum in Non-Abelian Theories

It is shown that, in the theory of interacting Yang -Mills fields and a Higgs field, there is a topological degeneracy of Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) monopoles and that there arises, in this case, a chromoelectric monopole characterized by a new topological variable that describes transitions between topological states of the monopole in the Minkowski space (in just the same way as an instanton describes such transitions in the Euclidean space). The limit of an infinitely large mass of the Higgs field at a finite density of the BPS monopole is considered as a model of the stable vacuum in the pure Yang-Mills theory. It is shown that, in QCD, such a monopole vacuum may lead to a rising potential, a topological confinement and an additional mass of the η0\eta_0 meson. The relationship between the result obtained here for the generating functional of perturbation theory and Faddeev-Popov integral is discussed

Planning and Leveraging Event Portfolios: Towards a Holistic Theory

    Get PDF
This conceptual paper seeks to advance the discourse on the leveraging and legacies of events by examining the planning, management, and leveraging of event portfolios. This examination shifts the common focus from analyzing single events towards multiple events and purposes that can enable cross-leveraging among different events in pursuit of attainment and magnification of specific ends. The following frameworks are proposed: (1) event portfolio planning and leveraging, and (2) analyzing events networks and inter-organizational linkages. These frameworks are intended to provide, at this infancy stage of event portfolios research, a solid ground for building theory on the management of different types and scales of events within the context of a portfolio aimed to obtain, optimize and sustain tourism, as well as broader community benefits

Asymptotics and local constancy of characters of p-adic groups

In this paper we study quantitative aspects of trace characters Θπ\Theta_\pi of reductive pp-adic groups when the representation π\pi varies. Our approach is based on the local constancy of characters and we survey some other related results. We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of Θπ\Theta_\pi relative to the formal degree of π\pi, which we are able to prove in the case where π\pi is a tame supercuspidal. The proof builds on J.-K.~Yu's construction and the structure of Moy-Prasad subgroups.Comment: Proceedings of Simons symposium on the trace formul
