    There is continuous interest in the nature of alkali metal fullerides containing C(4)(60) and C(2)(60), because these compounds are believed to be nonmagnetic Mott–Jahn–Teller insulators. This idea could be verified in the case of A(4)C(60), but Na(2)C(60) is more controversial. By comparing the results of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, we found that Na(2)C(60) is segregated into 3-10 nm large regions. The two main phases of the material are insulating C(60) and metallic Na(3)C(60). We found by neutron scattering that the diffusion of sodium ions becomes faster on heating. Above 470 K Na(2)C(60) is homogeneous and we show IR spectroscopic evidence of a Jahn–Teller distorted C(2)(60) anion

    Bat ticks revisited: Ixodes ariadnae sp. nov. and allopatric genotypes of I. vespertilionis in caves of Hungary

    BACKGROUND: In Europe two ixodid bat tick species, Ixodes vespertilionis and I. simplex were hitherto known to occur. METHODS: Bat ticks were collected from cave walls and bats in Hungary. Their morphology and genotypes were compared with microscopy and conventional PCR (followed by sequencing), respectively. RESULTS: A year-round activity of I. vespertilionis was observed. Molecular analysis of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of twenty ticks from different caves showed that the occurrence of the most common genotype was associated with the caves close to each other. A few specimens of a morphologically different tick variant were also found and their COI analysis revealed only 86-88% sequence homology with I. simplex and I. vespertilionis, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The microenvironment of caves (well separated from each other) appears to support the existence of allopatric I. vespertilionis COI genotypes, most likely related to the distance between caves and to bat migration over-bridging certain caves. The name I. ariadnae sp. nov. is given to the new tick species described here for the first time

    Vibrational spectra of C60C8H8 and C70C8H8 in the rotor-stator and polymer phases

    C60-C8H8 and C70-C8H8 are prototypes of rotor-stator cocrystals. We present infrared and Raman spectra of these materials and show how the rotor-stator nature is reflected in their vibrational properties. We measured the vibrational spectra of the polymer phases poly(C60C8H8) and poly(C70C8H8) resulting from a solid state reaction occurring on heating. Based on the spectra we propose a connection pattern for the fullerene in poly(C60C8H8), where the symmetry of the C60 is D2h.     To demonstrate the clinical comparability between RGB-10 (a biosimilar teriparatide) and the originator, a comparative pharmacokinetic trial was conducted. The study was successful in establishing bioequivalence. Marketing authorisation for RGB-10 (Terrosa®) was granted by the European Medicines Agency in 2017.Teriparatide, the first bone anabolic agent, is the biologically active fragment of human parathyroid hormone. The imminent patent expiry of the originator will open the door for biosimilars to enter the osteology market, thereby improving access to a highly effective, yet prohibitively expensive therapy.Subsequent to establishing comparability on the quality and non-clinical levels between RGB-10, a biosimilar teriparatide, and its reference product (Forsteo®), a randomised, double-blind, 2-way cross-over comparative study (duration: four days) was conducted in 54 healthy women (ages: 18 to 55 years) to demonstrate the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) equivalence and comparable safety of these products. Extents of exposure (AUC0-tlast) and peak exposure (Cmax), as measured by means of ELISA, were evaluated as co-primary PK endpoints, and serum calcium levels, as measured using standard automated techniques, were assessed for PD effects. Safety was monitored throughout the study.The 94.12% CIs for the ratio of the test to the reference treatments, used due to the two-stage design (85.20-98.60% and 85.51-99.52% for AUC0-tlast and Cmax, respectively), fell within the 80.00-125.00% acceptance range. The calcium PD parameters were essentially identical with geometric mean ratios (GMRs) of 99.93% and 99.87% for AUC and Cmax, respectively. Analysis of the safety data did not reveal any differences between RGB-10 and its reference.Based on the high level of similarity in the preclinical data and the results of this clinical study, marketing authorisation for RGB-10 (Terrosa®) was granted by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2017

    DNA of free-living bodonids (Euglenozoa: Kinetoplastea) in bat ectoparasites: potential relevance to the evolution of parasitic trypanosomatids

    Kinetoplastids are flagellated protozoa, including principally free-living bodonids and exclusively parasitic trypanosomatids. In the most species-rich genus, Trypanosoma, more than thirty species were found to infect bats worldwide. Bat trypanosomes are also known to have played a significant role in the evolution of T. cruzi, a species with high veterinary medical significance. Although preliminary data attested the occurrence of bat trypanosomes in Hungary, these were never sought for with molecular methods. Therefore, amplification of an approx. 900-bp fragment of the 18S rRNA gene of kinetoplastids was attempted from 307 ixodid and 299 argasid ticks collected from bats, and from 207 cimicid bugs collected from or near bats in Hungary and Romania. Three samples, one per each bat ectoparasite group, were PCR positive. Sequencing revealed the presence of DNA from free-living bodonids (Bodo saltans and neobodonids), but no trypanosomes were detected. The most likely source of bodonid DNA detected here in engorged bat ectoparasites is the blood of their bat hosts. However, how bodonids were acquired by bats, can only be speculated. Bats are known to drink from freshwater bodies, i.e. the natural habitats of B. saltans and related species, allowing bats to ingest bodonids. Consequently, these results suggest that at least the DNA of bodonids might pass through the alimentary mucosa of bats into their circulation. The above findings highlight the importance of studying bats and other mammals for the occurrence of bodonids in their blood and excreta, with potential relevance to the evolution of free-living kinetoplastids towards parasitism

    Cuticular Compounds Bring New Insight in the Post-Glacial Recolonization of a Pyrenean Area: Deutonura deficiens Deharveng, 1979 Complex, a Case Study

    Background: In most Arthropod groups, the study of systematics and evolution rely mostly on neutral characters, in this context cuticular compounds, as non-neutral characters, represent an underexplored but potentially informative type of characters at the infraspecific level as they have been routinely proven to be involved in sexual attraction. Methods and Findings: The collembolan species complex Deutonura deficiens was chosen as a model in order to test the utility of these characters for delineating four infraspecific entities of this group. Specimens were collected for three subspecies (D. d. deficiens, D. d. meridionalis, D. d. sylvatica) and two morphotypes (D. d. sylvatica morphoype A and B) of the complex; an additional species D. monticola was added. Cuticular compounds were extracted and separated by gas chromatography for each individual. Our results demonstrate that cuticular compounds succeeded in separating the different elements of this complex. Those data allowed also the reconstruction of the phylogenetic relationships among them. Conclusions: The discriminating power of cuticular compounds is directly related to their involvement in sexual attraction and mate recognition. These findings allowed a discussion on the potential involvement of intrinsic and paleoclimatic factors in the origin and the diversification of this complex in the Pyrenean zone.
