Frequency Dependent Viscosity Near the Critical Point: The Scale to Two Loop Order
The recent accurate measurements of Berg, Moldover and Zimmerli of the
viscoelastic effect near the critical point of xenon has shown that the scale
factor involved in the frequency scaling is about twice the scale factor
obtained theoretically. We show that this discrepancy is a consequence of using
first order perturbation theory. Including two loop contribution goes a long
way towards removing the discrepancy.Comment: No of pages:7,Submitted to PR-E(Rapid Communication),No of EPS

Density of states and Fisher's zeros in compact U(1) pure gauge theory
We present high-accuracy calculations of the density of states using
multicanonical methods for lattice gauge theory with a compact gauge group U(1)
on 4^4, 6^4 and 8^4 lattices. We show that the results are consistent with weak
and strong coupling expansions. We present methods based on Chebyshev
interpolations and Cauchy theorem to find the (Fisher's) zeros of the partition
function in the complex beta=1/g^2 plane. The results are consistent with
reweighting methods whenever the latter are accurate. We discuss the volume
dependence of the imaginary part of the Fisher's zeros, the width and depth of
the plaquette distribution at the value of beta where the two peaks have equal
height. We discuss strategies to discriminate between first and second order
transitions and explore them with data at larger volume but lower statistics.
Higher statistics and even larger lattices are necessary to draw strong
conclusions regarding the order of the transition.Comment: 14 pages, 16 figure
Multicanonical Study of the 3D Ising Spin Glass
We simulated the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass model in three dimensions
via the recently proposed multicanonical ensemble. Physical quantities such as
energy density, specific heat and entropy are evaluated at all temperatures. We
studied their finite size scaling, as well as the zero temperature limit to
explore the ground state properties.Comment: FSU-SCRI-92-121; 7 pages; sorry, no figures include
Monte Carlo Simulation of the Three-dimensional Ising Spin Glass
We study the 3D Edwards-Anderson model with binary interactions by Monte
Carlo simulations. Direct evidence of finite-size scaling is provided, and the
universal finite-size scaling functions are determined. Using an iterative
extrapolation procedure, Monte Carlo data are extrapolated to infinite volume
up to correlation length \xi = 140. The infinite volume data are consistent
with both a continuous phase transition at finite temperature and an essential
singularity at finite temperature. An essential singularity at zero temperature
is excluded.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures. Proceedings of the Workshop "Computer Simulation

Spin glass overlap barriers in three and four dimensions
For the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin-glass model in three and four dimensions
(3d and 4d) we have performed high statistics Monte Carlo calculations of those
free-energy barriers which are visible in the probability density
of the Parisi overlap parameter . The calculations rely on the
recently introduced multi-overlap algorithm. In both dimensions, within the
limits of lattice sizes investigated, these barriers are found to be
non-self-averaging and the same is true for the autocorrelation times of our
algorithm. Further, we present evidence that barriers hidden in dominate
the canonical autocorrelation times.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, 12 Postscript figures, revised version to appear in

Testing Error Correcting Codes by Multicanonical Sampling of Rare Events
The idea of rare event sampling is applied to the estimation of the
performance of error-correcting codes. The essence of the idea is importance
sampling of the pattern of noises in the channel by Multicanonical Monte Carlo,
which enables efficient estimation of tails of the distribution of bit error
rate. The idea is successfully tested with a convolutional code
Multi-Overlap Simulations for Transitions between Reference Configurations
We introduce a new procedure to construct weight factors, which flatten the
probability density of the overlap with respect to some pre-defined reference
configuration. This allows one to overcome free energy barriers in the overlap
variable. Subsequently, we generalize the approach to deal with the overlaps
with respect to two reference configurations so that transitions between them
are induced. We illustrate our approach by simulations of the brainpeptide
Met-enkephalin with the ECEPP/2 energy function using the global-energy-minimum
and the second lowest-energy states as reference configurations. The free
energy is obtained as functions of the dihedral and the root-mean-square
distances from these two configurations. The latter allows one to identify the
transition state and to estimate its associated free energy barrier.Comment: 12 pages, (RevTeX), 14 figures, Phys. Rev. E, submitte
Glassy behavior induced by geometrical frustration in a hard-core lattice gas model
We introduce a hard-core lattice-gas model on generalized Bethe lattices and
investigate analytically and numerically its compaction behavior. If
compactified slowly, the system undergoes a first-order crystallization
transition. If compactified much faster, the system stays in a meta-stable
liquid state and undergoes a glass transition under further compaction. We show
that this behavior is induced by geometrical frustration which appears due to
the existence of short loops in the generalized Bethe lattices. We also compare
our results to numerical simulations of a three-dimensional analog of the
model.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, revised versio
Applicability of ERTS-1 to Montana geology
The author has identified the following significant results. Late autumn imagery provides the advantages of topographic shadow enhancement and low cloud cover. Mapping of rock units was done locally with good results for alluvium, basin fill, volcanics, inclined Paleozoic and Mesozoic beds, and host strata of bentonite beds. Folds, intrusive domes, and even dip directions were mapped where differential erosion was significant. However, mapping was not possible for belt strata, was difficult for granite, and was hindered by conifers compared to grass cover. Expansion of local mapping required geologic control and encountered significant areas unmappable from ERTS imagery. Annotation of lineaments provided much new geologic data. By extrapolating test site comparisons, it is inferred that 27 percent of some 1200 lineaments mapped from western Montana represent unknown faults. The remainder appear to be localized mainly by undiscovered faults and sets of minor faults or joints
A New Approach to Spin Glass Simulations
We present a recursive procedure to calculate the parameters of the recently
introduced multicanonical ensemble and explore the approach for spin glasses.
Temperature dependence of the energy, the entropy and other physical quantities
are easily calculable and we report results for the zero temperature limit. Our
data provide evidence that the large increase of the ergodicity time is
greatly improved. The multicanonical ensemble seems to open new horizons for
simulations of spin glasses and other systems which have to cope with
conflicting constraints
