    The gas phase cyclization of deprotonated N-aryl-2-cyano-2-diazoacetamides

    The document attached has been archived with permission from the publisher.1-Aryl-4-cyano-5-hydroxy-1,2,3-triazoles can be obtained in solution by base-catalysed cyclization of N-aryl-2-cyano-2-diazoacetamides. A similar reaction was shown to take place under conditions of negative ion chemical ionization in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. High resolution mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, charge reversal spectra, synthesis of the ions with known structures and quantum chemical calculations were used to prove the latter statement. The fact of the observed cyclization demonstrates once again the ability of mass spectrometry to study the gas phase chemical reactions that take place in solution.Vladislav V. Lobodin, Yuriy Yu.     Parallel quantized charge pumping

    Two quantized charge pumps are operated in parallel. The total current generated is shown to be far more accurate than the current produced with just one pump operating at a higher frequency. With the application of a perpendicular magnetic field the accuracy of quantization is shown to be << 20 ppm for a current of 108.9108.9 pA. The scheme for parallel pumping presented in this work has applications in quantum information processing, the generation of single photons in pairs and bunches, neural networking and the development of a quantum standard for electrical current. All these applications will benefit greatly from the increase in output current without the characteristic decrease in accuracy as a result of high-frequency operation

    Manure Impacts on Interrill Erosion

    This study was conducted to measure runoff and erosion from interrill areas as affected by the long-term application of manure and fertilizer to a Tripp sandy loam soil located near Mitchell, Nebraska. Soil that had been removed from the top 0.1 m of the soil profile was placed in a 1 m2 soil pan. Rainfall was then applied to the soil pan during initial and wet simulation events. Total runoff was similar on the manure and no-manure treatments. The long-term application of manure (55 years) at a rate of 27 Mg ha-1 (wet basis) per year did not significantly influence interrill erosion on this sandy loam soil. Interrill erosion was also unaffected by the addition of manure immediately before rainfall simulation tests to soils on which manure had been applied in previous years. No significant differences in runoff and erosion were found among plots receiving varying amounts of fertilizer. Selected soil properties were generally unaffected by the varying manure and fertilizer treatments

    A Causal Order for Spacetimes with C0C^0 Lorentzian Metrics: Proof of Compactness of the Space of Causal Curves

    We recast the tools of ``global causal analysis'' in accord with an approach to the subject animated by two distinctive features: a thoroughgoing reliance on order-theoretic concepts, and a utilization of the Vietoris topology for the space of closed subsets of a compact set. We are led to work with a new causal relation which we call K+K^+, and in terms of it we formulate extended definitions of concepts like causal curve and global hyperbolicity. In particular we prove that, in a spacetime \M which is free of causal cycles, one may define a causal curve simply as a compact connected subset of \M which is linearly ordered by K+K^+. Our definitions all make sense for arbitrary C0C^0 metrics (and even for certain metrics which fail to be invertible in places). Using this feature, we prove for a general C0C^0 metric, the familiar theorem that the space of causal curves between any two compact subsets of a globally hyperbolic spacetime is compact. We feel that our approach, in addition to yielding a more general theorem, simplifies and clarifies the reasoning involved. Our results have application in a recent positive energy theorem, and may also prove useful in the study of topology change. We have tried to make our treatment self-contained by including proofs of all the facts we use which are not widely available in reference works on topology and differential geometry.Comment: Two small revisions to accomodate errors brought to our attention by R.S.     Clinical utility of rosuvastatin and other statins for cardiovascular risk reduction among the elderly

    Age is one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Treatment with statins can significantly reduce CVD events and mortality in both primary and secondary prevention. Yet despite the high CVD risk among the elderly, there is underutilization of statins in this population (ie, the treatment-risk paradox). Few studies have investigated the use of statins in the elderly, particularly for primary prevention and, as a result, guidelines for treating the elderly are limited. This is likely due to: uncertainties of risk assessment in older individuals where the predictive value of individual risk factors is decreased; the need to balance the benefits of primary prevention with the risks of polypharmacy, health care costs, and adverse medication effects in a population with decreased life expectancy; the complexity of treating patients with many other comorbidities; and increasingly difficult social and economic concerns. As life expectancy increases and the total elderly population grows, these issues become increasingly important. JUPITER (Justification for the Use of statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin) is the largest primary prevention statin trial to date and enrolled a substantial number of elderly adults. Among the 5695 JUPITER participants ≥70 years of age, the absolute CVD risk reduction associated with rosuvastatin was actually greater than for younger participants. The implications of this JUPITER subanalysis and the broader role of statins among older adults is the subject of this review
