Many-body wavefunctions for normal liquid He
We present new trial wave-functions which include 3-body correlations into
the backflow coordinates and a 4-body symmetric potential. We show that our
wavefunctions lower the energy enough to stabilize the ground state energies of
normal liquid He in the unpolarized state at all pressures in agreement
with experiment; however, quantitative discrepancies remain. Further, we
include strong spin coupling into the Fermi liquid by adapting pairing wave
functions. We demonstrate a new, numerically stable method to evaluate pairing
functions which is also useful for Path Integrals calculations at low, but
non-zero temperatures.Comment: 5 page
The design of a multi-core extension of the Spin Model Checker
We describe an extension of the SPIN model checker for use on multi-core shared-memory systems and report on its performance. We show how, with proper load balancing, the time requirements of a verification run can in some cases be reduced close to N-fold when N processing cores are used. We also analyze the types of verification problems for which multi-core algorithms cannot provide relief. The extensions discussed here require only relatively small changes in the SPIN source code, and are compatible with most existing verification modes, such as partial order reduction, the verification of temporal logic formulae, bitstate hashing, and hash-compact compression
Optimal Scheduling Using Branch and Bound with SPIN 4.0
The use of model checkers to solve discrete optimisation problems is appealing. A model checker can first be used to verify that the model of the problem is correct. Subsequently, the same model can be used to find an optimal solution for the problem. This paper describes how to apply the new PROMELA primitives of SPIN 4.0 to search effectively for the optimal solution. We show how Branch-and-Bound techniques can be added to the LTL property that is used to find the solution. The LTL property is dynamically changed during the verification. We also show how the syntactical reordering of statements and/or processes in the PROMELA model can improve the search even further. The techniques are illustrated using two running examples: the Travelling Salesman Problem and a job-shop scheduling problem
Performance Evaluation of Vision-Based Algorithms for MAVs
An important focus of current research in the field of Micro Aerial Vehicles
(MAVs) is to increase the safety of their operation in general unstructured
environments. Especially indoors, where GPS cannot be used for localization,
reliable algorithms for localization and mapping of the environment are
necessary in order to keep an MAV airborne safely. In this paper, we compare
vision-based real-time capable methods for localization and mapping and point
out their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, we describe algorithms for
state estimation, control and navigation, which use the localization and
mapping results of our vision-based algorithms as input.Comment: Presented at OAGM Workshop, 2015 (arXiv:1505.01065
Isolated fungus ball mimicking mucocele or frontal sinus tumour: a diagnostic pitfall
Frontal sinus fungus ball should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic, nonspecific forehead symptoms. To evaluate the underlying disease, computed tomography scans should first be performed, followed by magnetic resonance imaging if malignancy is suspected. It is essential to be aware of the possibility of an atypical fungus ball appearance on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans. If bony destruction and calcification coexist on radiological images, then endoscopic biopsy is an indispensable part of the diagnostic procedure, and should be performed to collect material for both histological and mycological analysis, and to aid surgical planning. In cases of sinus fungus ball, an endoscopic approach for biopsy may be curative
Coupled Electron Ion Monte Carlo Calculations of Dense Metallic Hydrogen
We present a new Monte Carlo method which couples Path Integral for finite
temperature protons with Quantum Monte Carlo for ground state electrons, and we
apply it to metallic hydrogen for pressures beyond molecular dissociation. We
report data for the equation of state for temperatures across the melting of
the proton crystal. Our data exhibit more structure and higher melting
temperatures of the proton crystal than Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics
results. This method fills the gap between high temperature electron-proton
Path Integral and ground state Diffusion Monte Carlo methods
Isolated fungus ball mimicking mucocele or frontal sinus tumour: a diagnostic pitfall
Abstract Objective: To demonstrate the clinical, radiological and diagnostic pitfalls of managing an isolated frontal sinus fungus ball, and to compare with the literature. Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of two cases and literature review. Results: Isolated frontal sinus fungus ball is a rare cause of frontal sinus disease. We present two cases of isolated frontal sinus fungus ball which pre-operatively were suspected to be either a tumour or a mucocele. In both cases, cheesy, clay-like material was found intra-operatively within the frontal sinus, suggesting a fungus ball. Effective treatment included surgical debridement via an exclusively endoscopic or an external approach, variously. Final histopathological and mycological analysis revealed Aspergillus fumigatus. A literature review revealed 20 reported cases of isolated frontal sinus fungus ball, confirming the low prevalence of the disease. Conclusions: Frontal sinus fungus ball should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic, nonspecific forehead symptoms. To evaluate the underlying disease, computed tomography scans should first be performed, followed by magnetic resonance imaging if malignancy is suspected. It is essential to be aware of the possibility of an atypical fungus ball appearance on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans.
