Parametric correlations versus fidelity decay: the symmetry breaking case
We derive fidelity decay and parametric energy correlations for random matrix
ensembles where time--reversal invariance of the original Hamiltonian is broken
by the perturbation. Like in the case of a symmetry conserving perturbation a

Semiclassical Approach to Parametric Spectral Correlation with Spin 1/2
The spectral correlation of a chaotic system with spin 1/2 is universally
described by the GSE (Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble) of random matrices in the
semiclassical limit. In semiclassical theory, the spectral form factor is
expressed in terms of the periodic orbits and the spin state is simulated by
the uniform distribution on a sphere. In this paper, instead of the uniform
distribution, we introduce Brownian motion on a sphere to yield the parametric
motion of the energy levels. As a result, the small time expansion of the form
factor is obtained and found to be in agreement with the prediction of
parametric random matrices in the transition within the GSE universality class.
Moreover, by starting the Brownian motion from a point distribution on the
sphere, we gradually increase the effect of the spin and calculate the form
factor describing the transition from the GOE (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble)

Noble Gas Analysis for Mars Robotic Missions: Evaluating K-Ar Age Dating for Mars Rock Analogs and Martian Shergottites
The purpose of this noble gas investigation was to evaluate the possibility of measuring noble gases in martian rocks and air by future robotic missions such as the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). The MSL mission has, as part of its payload, the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument, which consists of a pyrolysis oven integrated with a GCMS. The MSL SAM instrument has the capability to measure noble gas compositions of martian rocks and atmosphere. Here we suggest the possibility of K-Ar age dating based on noble gas release of martian rocks by conducting laboratory simulation experiments on terrestrial basalts and martian meteorites. We provide requirements for the SAM instrument to obtain adequate noble gas abundances and compositions within the current SAM instrumental operating conditions, especially, a power limit that prevents heating the furnace above approx.1100 C. In addition, Martian meteorite analyses from NASA-JSC will be used as ground truth to evaluate the feasibility of robotic experiments to constrain the ages of martian surface rocks
Functional central limit theorems for vicious walkers
We consider the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walker model that is a
system of nonintersecting random walks. We prove a functional central limit
theorem for the model and derive two types of nonintersecting Brownian motions,
in which the nonintersecting condition is imposed in a finite time interval
for the first type and in an infinite time interval for
the second type, respectively. The limit process of the first type is a
temporally inhomogeneous diffusion, and that of the second type is a temporally
homogeneous diffusion that is identified with a Dyson's model of Brownian
motions studied in the random matrix theory. We show that these two types of
processes are related to each other by a multi-dimensional generalization of
Imhof's relation, whose original form relates the Brownian meander and the
three-dimensional Bessel process. We also study the vicious walkers with wall
restriction and prove a functional central limit theorem in the diffusion

Satellite holmium M-edge spectra from the magnetic phase via resonant x-ray scattering
Developing an expression of resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) amplitude which
is convenient for investigating the contributions from the higher rank tensor
on the basis of a localized electron picture, we analyze the RXS spectra from
the magnetic phases of Ho near the absorption edges. At the
edge in the uniform helical phase, the calculated spectra of the absorption
coefficient, the RXS intensities at the first and second satellite spots
capture the properties the experimental data possess, such as the spectral
shapes and the peak positions. This demonstrates the plausibility of the
adoption of the localized picture in this material and the effectiveness of the
spectral shape analysis. The latter point is markedly valuable since the
azimuthal angle dependence, which is one of the most useful informations RXS
can provides, is lacking in the experimental conditions. Then, by focusing on
the temperature dependence of the spectral shape at the second satellite spot,
we expect that the spectrum is the contribution of the pure rank two profile in
the uniform helical and the conical phases while that is dominated by the rank
one profile in the intermediate temperature phase, so-called spin slip phase.
The change of the spectral shape as a function of temperature indicates a
direct evidence of the change of magnetic structures undergoing. Furthermore,
we predict that the intensity, which is the same order observed at the second
satellite spot, is expected at the fourth satellite spot from the conical phase
in the electric dipolar transition.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure
Extremely strong-coupling superconductivity and anomalous lattice properties in the beta-pyrochlore oxide KOs2O6
Superconducting and normal-state properties of the beta-pyrochlore oxide
KOs2O6 are studied by means of thermodynamic and transport measurements. It is
shown that the superconductivity is of conventional s-wave type and lies in the
extremely strong-coupling regime. Specific heat and resistivity measurements
reveal that there are characteristic low-energy phonons that give rise to
unusual scattering of carriers due to strong electron-phonon interactions. The
entity of the low-energy phonons is ascribed to the heavy rattling of the K ion
confined in an oversized cage made of OsO6 octahedra. It is suggested that this
electron-rattler coupling mediates the Cooper pairing, resulting in the

A retrospective case-control study of hepatitis C virus infection and oral lichen planus in Japan: association study with mutations in the core and NS5A region of hepatitis C virus
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Japanese patients with oral lichen planus and identify the impact of amino acid (aa) substitutions in the HCV core region and IFN-sensitivity-determining region (ISDR) of nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A) associated with lichen planus.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this retrospective study, 59 patients (group 1-A) with oral lichen planus among 226 consecutive patients who visited our hospital and 85 individuals (group 1-B, controls) with normal oral mucosa were investigated for the presence of liver disease and HCV infection. Risk factors for the presence of oral lichen planus were assessed by logistic regression analysis. We compared aa substitutions in the HCV core region (70 and/or 91) and ISDR of NS5A of 12 patients with oral lichen planus (group 2-A) and 7 patients who did not have oral lichen planus (group 2-B) among patients (high viral loads, genotype 1b) who received interferon (IFN) therapy in group1-A.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of anti-HCV and HCV RNA was 67.80% (40/59) and 59.32% (35/59), respectively, in group 1-A and 31.76% (27/85) and 16.47% (14/85), respectively, in group 1-B. The prevalence of anti-HCV (<it>P </it>< 0.0001) and HCV RNA (<it>P </it>< 0.0001) in group 1-A was significantly higher than those in group 1-B. According to multivariate analysis, three factors - positivity for HCV RNA, low albumin level (< 4.0 g/dL), and history of smoking - were associated with the development of oral lichen planus. The adjusted odds ratios for these three factors were 6.58, 3.53 and 2.58, respectively, and each was statistically significant. No significant differences in viral factors, such as aa substitutions in the core region and ISDR of NS5A, were detected between the two groups (groups 2-A and -B).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We observed a high prevalence of HCV infection in patients with oral lichen planus. Longstanding HCV infection, hypoalbuminemia, and smoking were significant risk factors for the presence of oral lichen planus in patients. It is advisable for Japanese patients with lichen planus to be tested for HCV infection during medical examination.</p
Peak reduction technique in commutative algebra
The "peak reduction" method is a powerful combinatorial technique with
applications in many different areas of mathematics as well as theoretical
computer science. It was introduced by Whitehead, a famous topologist and group
theorist, who used it to solve an important algorithmic problem concerning
automorphisms of a free group. Since then, this method was used to solve
numerous problems in group theory, topology, combinatorics, and probably in
some other areas as well.
In this paper, we give a survey of what seems to be the first applications of
the peak reduction technique in commutative algebra and affine algebraic

Serum albumin and mortality risk in a hyperendemic area of HCV infection in Japan
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hypoalbuminemia has been shown to be associated with increased mortality. We reported a mass screening in 1990 of X town in Japan, which demonstrated a high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This follow-up study determined, through a period of 12 years, whether serum albumin levels impact on the life prognosis of the residents of X town.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 509 subjects, 69 had died and 55 had moved to other regions by 2002. Therefore, we analyzed 454 people for whom we could confirm life and death between 1990 and 2002. Albumin levels were assigned to two groups, low (<4.0 g/L, group A) and normal (≥4.0 g/L, group B). Of the 454 subjects analyzed, 25 were in group A and 429 in group B and the mortality was 68.0% (17/25 cases, P < 0.00001 vs. group B) and 12.1% (52/429), respectively. Mortality from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was 66.7% in group A (6/9 cases, P = 0.01 vs. group B) and 15.8% (3/19) in group B. According to multivariate analysis, five factors - 50 years or older, low albumin level (<4.0 g/L), abnormal AST level, history of smoking, and absence of alcohol consumption - were associated with death. The adjusted odds ratios for these five factors were 20.65, 10.79, 2.58, 2.24 and 2.08, respectively, and each was statistically significant.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We show that the serum albumin level is an independent risk factor for mortality from all causes in the residents of X town and an important prognostic indicator. Improvement of hypoalbuminaemia should be considered for improvement of prognosis.</p
