Stochastics theory of log-periodic patterns
We introduce an analytical model based on birth-death clustering processes to
help understanding the empirical log-periodic corrections to power-law scaling
and the finite-time singularity as reported in several domains including
rupture, earthquakes, world population and financial systems. In our
stochastics theory log-periodicities are a consequence of transient clusters
induced by an entropy-like term that may reflect the amount of cooperative
information carried by the state of a large system of different species. The
clustering completion rates for the system are assumed to be given by a simple
linear death process. The singularity at t_{o} is derived in terms of

Focusing and Compression of Ultrashort Pulses through Scattering Media
Light scattering in inhomogeneous media induces wavefront distortions which
pose an inherent limitation in many optical applications. Examples range from
microscopy and nanosurgery to astronomy. In recent years, ongoing efforts have
made the correction of spatial distortions possible by wavefront shaping
techniques. However, when ultrashort pulses are employed scattering induces
temporal distortions which hinder their use in nonlinear processes such as in
multiphoton microscopy and quantum control experiments. Here we show that
correction of both spatial and temporal distortions can be attained by
manipulating only the spatial degrees of freedom of the incident wavefront.
Moreover, by optimizing a nonlinear signal the refocused pulse can be shorter
than the input pulse. We demonstrate focusing of 100fs pulses through a 1mm
thick brain tissue, and 1000-fold enhancement of a localized two-photon
fluorescence signal. Our results open up new possibilities for optical
manipulation and nonlinear imaging in scattering media
Detection of mechanical resonance of a single-electron transistor by direct current
We have suspended an Al based single-electron transistor whose island can
resonate freely between the source and drain leads forming the clamps. In
addition to the regular side gate, a bottom gate with a larger capacitance to
the SET island is placed underneath to increase the SET coupling to mechanical
motion. The device can be considered as a doubly clamped Al beam that can
transduce mechanical vibrations into variations of the SET current. Our
simulations based on the orthodox model, with the SET parameters estimated from
the experiment, reproduce the observed transport characteristics in detail.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Adsorption behavior of Eu(III) on partially Fe(III)- or Ti(IV)-coated silica
The adsorption behavior of Eu(III) onto silica surface, which was partially coated with Fe(III) or Ti(IV), was investigated to determine Fe(III) or Ti(IV) effects on the surface reaction of lanthanides on mineral surfaces in groundwater. Compared with a parallel uncoated silica, the Fe(III)-coated silica did not enhance the adsorption of Eu(III). However, enhanced adsorption of Eu(III) on the Ti(IV)-coated silica was observed by increasing the amount of Ti(IV) on the silica surface

The primary aim of this chapter is, commemorating the 150th anniversary of
Riemann's death, to explain how the idea of {\it Riemann sum} is linked to
other branches of mathematics. The materials I treat are more or less classical
and elementary, thus available to the "common mathematician in the streets."
However one may still see here interesting inter-connection and cohesiveness in
mathematics
Spitzer Observations of the North Ecliptic Pole
We present a photometric catalog for Spitzer Space Telescope warm mission
observations of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP; centered at , ). The observations are
conducted with IRAC in 3.6 m and 4.5 m bands over an area of 7.04
deg reaching 1 depths of 1.29 Jy and 0.79 Jy in the 3.6
m and 4.5 m bands respectively. The photometric catalog contains
380,858 sources with 3.6 m and 4.5 m band photometry over the
full-depth NEP mosaic. Point source completeness simulations show that the
catalog is 80% complete down to 19.7 AB. The accompanying catalog can be
utilized in constraining the physical properties of extra-galactic objects,
studying the AGN population, measuring the infrared colors of stellar objects,

Synthesis and Characterization of β-Cyclodextrin/alginate Nanoparticle as a Novel Drug Delivery System
The aim of this work was to study a novel nanoparticle system formed from alginate and β-cyclodextrin by ionotropic gelation method and to evaluate their potential for the association and delivery of drugs. The nanoparticles were prepared by electrostatic interactions between Ca2+/alginate gel and β-cyclodextrin. Morphology and structure characterization of nanoparticles was investigated by scanning electron micrographs (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The nanoparticle size was about 50 – 80 nm and their structure quite regular and consistent.
Ketoprofen, chosen as a model drug, was incorporated into the nanocarriers with association efficiency of 50.7 % and loading efficiency of 5.7 %. Ketoprofen released from the nanoparticles was 57 % at pH 7.4 and 69 % at pH 5.0 for 4 h
Metabolic perturbations in mutants of glucose transporters and their applications in metabolite production in Escherichia coli
Background: Most microorganisms have evolved to maximize growth rate, with rapid consumption of carbon sources from the surroundings. However, fast growing phenotypes usually feature secretion of organic compounds. For example, E. coli mainly produced acetate in fast growing condition such as glucose rich and aerobic condition, which is troublesome for metabolic engineering because acetate causes acidification of surroundings, growth inhibition and decline of production yield. The overflow metabolism can be alleviated by reducing glucose uptake rate. Results: As glucose transporters or their subunits were knocked out in E. coli, the growth and glucose uptake rates decreased and biomass yield was improved. Alteration of intracellular metabolism caused by the mutations was investigated with transcriptome analysis and C-13 metabolic flux analysis (C-13 MFA). Various transcriptional and metabolic perturbations were identified in the sugar transporter mutants. Transcription of genes related to glycolysis, chemotaxis, and flagella synthesis was downregulated, and that of gluconeogenesis, Krebs cycle, alternative transporters, quorum sensing, and stress induced proteins was upregulated in the sugar transporter mutants. The specific production yields of value-added compounds (enhanced green fluorescent protein, gamma-aminobutyrate, lycopene) were improved significantly in the sugar transporter mutants. Conclusions: The elimination of sugar transporter resulted in alteration of global gene expression and redirection of carbon flux distribution, which was purposed to increase energy yield and recycle carbon sources. When the pathways for several valuable compounds were introduced to mutant strains, specific yield of them were highly improved. These results showed that controlling the sugar uptake rate is a good strategy for ameliorating metabolite production.11Ysciescopu
