Magnetic Coupling Between Non-Magnetic Ions: Eu3+ in EuN and EuP

We consider the electronic structure of, and magnetic exchange (spin) interactions between, nominally nonmagnetic Eu^3+ ions (4f^6, S=3, L=3, J=0) within the context of the rocksalt structure compounds EuN and EuP. Both compounds are ionic [Eu^3+; N^3- and P^3-] semimetals similar to isovalent GdN. Treating the spin polarization within the 4f shell, and then averaging consistent with the J=0 configuration, we estimate semimetallic band overlaps (Eu 5d with pnictide 2p or 3p) of ~0.1 eV (EuN) and ~1.0 eV (EuP) that increase (become more metallic) with pressure. The calculated bulk modulus is 130 (86) GPa for EuN (EuP). Exchange (spin-spin) coupling calculated from correlated band theory is small and ferromagnetic in sign for EuN, increasing in magnitude with pressure. Conversely, the exchange coupling is antiferromagnetic in sign for EuP and is larger in magnitude, but decreases with compression. Study of a two-site model with S_1*S_2 coupling within the J=0,1 spaces of each ion illustrates the dependence of the magnetic correlation functions on the model parameters, and indicates that the spin coupling is sufficient to alter the Van Vleck susceptibility. We outline a scenario of a spin-correlation transition in a lattice of S=3, L=3, J=0 nonmagnetic ions

Relativistic Doppler effect: universal spectra and zeptosecond pulses

We report on a numerical observation of the train of zeptosecond pulses produced by reflection of a relativistically intense femtosecond laser pulse from the oscillating boundary of an overdense plasma because of the Doppler effect. These pulses promise to become a unique experimental and technological tool since their length is of the order of the Bohr radius and the intensity is extremely high 1019\propto 10^{19} W/cm2^2. We present the physical mechanism, analytical theory, and direct particle-in-cell simulations. We show that the harmonic spectrum is universal: the intensity of nnth harmonic scales as 1/np1/n^{p} for n<4γ2n < 4\gamma^2, where γ\gamma is the largest γ\gamma--factor of the electron fluid boundary, p=3p=3 and p=5/2p=5/2 for the broadband and quasimonochromatic laser pulses respectively.Comment: 4 figure

Theory of high harmonic generation in relativistic laser interaction with overdense plasma

    Get PDF
High harmonic generation due to the interaction of a short ultra relativistic laser pulse with overdense plasma is studied analytically and numerically. On the basis of the ultra relativistic similarity theory we show that the high harmonic spectrum is universal, i.e. it does not depend on the interaction details. The spectrum includes the power law part Inn8/3I_n\propto n^{-8/3} for n<8αγmax3n<\sqrt{8\alpha}\gamma_{\max}^3, followed by exponential decay. Here γmax\gamma_{\max} is the largest relativistic γ\gamma-factor of the plasma surface and α\alpha is the second derivative of the surface velocity at this moment. The high harmonic cutoff at γmax3\propto \gamma_{\max}^3 is parametrically larger than the 4γmax24 \gamma_{\max}^2 predicted by the ``oscillating mirror'' model based on the Doppler effect. The cornerstone of our theory is the new physical phenomenon: spikes in the relativistic γ\gamma-factor of the plasma surface. These spikes define the high harmonic spectrum and lead to attosecond pulses in the reflected radiation.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

Experimental comparison of fiber optic parametric, Raman and erbium amplifiers for burst traffic for extended reach PONs

    Get PDF
We experimentally compare the performance of a polarization-independent fiber optic parametric amplifier (FOPA), a discrete Raman amplifier and a commercial erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for burst traffic amplification in extended reach passive optical networks (PON). We demonstrate that EDFA and Raman amplifiers suffer from severe transient effects, causing penalty on receiver sensitivity >5 dB for traffic bursts of 10 Gbps on-off keying signal shorter than 10 µs. On the other hand, we demonstrate that FOPA does not introduce a penalty on receiver sensitivity when amplifying signal bursts as short as 5 µs as compared to a non-burst signal. Therefore, FOPA used as a drop-in replacement for an EDFA or Raman amplifier allows us to improve receiver sensitivity by >3 dB for short signal bursts. We conclude that FOPA allows substantially increased power budget for an extended reach PON transmitting variable duration bursts. In addition, we identify the maximum burst duration tolerated by each examined amplifier
