    Proposal for a Supersymmetric Standard Model

    The fact that neutrinos are massive suggests that the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) might be extended in order to include three gauge-singlet neutrino superfields with Yukawa couplings of the type H2LνcH_2 L \nu^c. We propose to use these superfields to solve the μ\mu problem of the MSSM without having to introduce an extra singlet superfield as in the case of the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM). In particular, terms of the type νcH1H2\nu^c H_1 H_2 in the superpotential may carry out this task spontaneously through sneutrino vacuum expectation values. In addition, terms of the type (νc)3(\nu^c)^3 avoid the presence of axions and generate effective Majorana masses for neutrinos at the electroweak scale. On the other hand, these terms break lepton number and R-parity explicitly implying that the phenomenology of this model is very different from the one of the MSSM or NMSSM. For example, the usual neutralinos are now mixed with the neutrinos. For Dirac masses of the latter of order 10−410^{-4} GeV, eigenvalues reproducing the correct scale of neutrino masses are obtained.Comment: 9 pages, latex, title modified.     Anisotropic response of the moving vortex lattice in superconducting Mo(1−x)_{(1-x)}Gex_{x} amorphous films

    We have performed magnetic susceptibility measurements in Mo(1−x)_{(1-x)}Gex_x amorphous thin films biased with an electrical current using anisotropic coils. We tested the symmetry of the vortex response changing the relative orientation between the bias current and the susceptibility coils. We found a region in the DC current - temperature phase diagram where the dynamical vortex structures behave anisotropically. In this region the shielding capability of the superconducting currents measured by the susceptibility coils is less effective along the direction of vortex motion compared to the transverse direction. This anisotropic response is found in the same region where the peak effect in the critical current is developed. On rising temperature the isotropic behavior is recovered.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Beyond the soft photon approximation in radiative production and decay of charged vector mesons

    We study the effects of model-dependent contributions and the electric quadrupole moment of vector mesons in the decays V−→P−P0γV^- \to P^-P^0\gamma and τ−→νV−γ\tau^- \to \nu V^-\gamma. Their interference with the amplitude originating from the radiation due to electric charges vanishes for photons emitted collinearly to the charged particle in the final state. This brings further support to our claim in previous works, that measurements of the photon energy spectrum for nearly collinear photons in those decays are suitable for a first measurement of the magnetic dipole moment of charged vector mesons.Comment: 13 pages, 2 eps figures, Latex.     Comment on `Strong Vortex Liquid Correlation' from Multiterminal Measurements on Untwinned YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} Single Crystals'

    A.Rydh and \"O.Rapp [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 1873 (2001).] claim that the vortex liquid in untwinned YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} crystals is correlated above the melting transition, in striking contrast to previous work [D.L\'opez {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 4034 (1996).]. In this Comment we present new measurements using the same experimental technique on twinned and untwinned YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} crystals with similar overall characteristics as those reported by Rydh and Rapp . The comparison of the vortex correlation response in both cases indicates that the central conclusion of their work is not correct. Our results reconfirm the work by L\'opez {\it et al.} and points on the origin of the misinterpretation in the work of Rydh and Rapp.Comment: comment on A.Rydh and \"O.Rapp, Phys. Rev.     Comment on "Anomalies in electrostatic calibration for the measurement of the Casimir force in a sphere-plane geometry"

    Recently W. J. Kim, M. Brown-Hayes, D. A. R. Dalvit, J. H. Brownell, and R. Onofrio [Phys. Rev. A, v.78, 036102(R) (2008)] performed electrostatic calibrations for a plane plate above a centimeter-size spherical lens at separations down to 20-30 nm and observed "anomalous behavior". It was found that the gradient of the electrostatic force does not depend on separation as predicted on the basis of a pure Coulombian contribution. Some hypotheses which could potentially explain the deviation from the expected behavior were considered, and qualitative arguments in favor of the influence of patch surface potentials were presented. We demonstrate that for the large lenses at separations of a few tens nanometers from the plate, the electrostatic force law used by the authors is not applicable due to possible deviations of the mechanically polished and ground lens surface from a perfect spherical shape. A model is proposed which explains the observed "anomalous behavior" using the standard Coulombian force.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Effect of disorder on the vortex-lattice melting transition

    We use a three dimensional stacked triangular network of Josephson junctions as a model for the study of vortex structure in the mixed state of high Tc superconductors. We show that the addition of disorder destroys the first order melting transition occurring for clean samples. The melting transition splits in two different (continuous) transitions, ocurring at temperatures Ti and Tp (>Ti). At Ti the perpendicular-to-field superconductivity is lost, and at Tp the parallel-to-field superconductivity is lost. These results agree well with recent experiments in YBaCuO.Comment: 4 pages + 2 figure

    Functional approach to quantum friction: effective action and dissipative force

    We study the Casimir friction due to the relative, uniform, lateral motion of two parallel semitransparent mirrors coupled to a vacuum real scalar field, Ï•\phi. We follow a functional approach, whereby nonlocal terms in the action for Ï•\phi, concentrated on the mirrors' locii, appear after functional integration of the microscopic degrees of freedom. This action for Ï•\phi, which incorporates the relevant properties of the mirrors, is then used as the starting point for two complementary evaluations: Firstly, we calculate the { in-out} effective action for the system, which develops an imaginary part, hence a non-vanishing probability for the decay (because of friction) of the initial vacuum state. Secondly, we evaluate another observable: the vacuum expectation value of the frictional force, using the { in-in} or Closed Time Path formalism. Explicit results are presented for zero-width mirrors and half-spaces, in a model where the microscopic degrees of freedom at the mirrors are a set of identical quantum harmonic oscillators, linearly coupled to $\phi
