    Remark on charge conjugation in the non relativistic limit

    We study the non relativistic limit of the charge conjugation operation C\cal C in the context of the Dirac equation coupled to an electromagnetic field. The limit is well defined and, as in the relativistic case, C\cal C, P\cal P (parity) and T\cal T (time reversal) are the generators of a matrix group isomorphic to a semidirect sum of the dihedral group of eight elements and Z2\Z_2. The existence of the limit is supported by an argument based in quantum field theory. Also, and most important, the limit exists in the context of galilean relativity. Finally, if one complexifies the Lorentz group and therefore the galilean spacetime xμx_\mu, then the explicit form of the matrix for C\cal C allows to interpret it, in this context, as the complex conjugation of the spatial coordinates: xx\vec{x} \to \vec{x}^*. This result is natural in a fiber bundle description.Comment: 8 page

    Energy Savings Report For Dallas County, July 2000 – June 2001

    This report begins with a complete summary of the energy, demand and cost savings for each of the 12 sites being analyzed. This summary is followed by a two-page report for each site. The report concludes with an appendix that describes a comparison between analysis of the hourly data and of the monthly data for the Records Complex.This report presents the energy and dollar savings for the period July 2000 - June 2001 for 12 Dallas County facilities that have been retrofit by Enershop. The savings for this period total 745,046,whichrepresent73.2745,046, which represent 73.2% of the audit estimated savings. The electric demand savings are 261,517 and the electric usage savings are $483,529. The savings have improved somewhat from the previous report that included the billing periods for April - June 2000. The savings for the earlier period were 62.6% of the audit estimated savings compared with 73.2% for the current period

    Retrofit Savings for Brazos County

    This report presents the energy and dollar savings for the period May 2000 - April 2001 for 10 of the Brazos County facilities that have been retrofit. The electricity use saved was 555,170 kWh and the demand was 1062 kW, which is equivalent to a 31,743dollarssavings,31,743 dollars savings, 24,650 from electricity use and $7,093 from the electric demand. These savings represent a 60.8% of the audit-estimated savings and a 93.7% of the audit-estimated savings if just the positive one were taken in account. The savings have improved somewhat from the previous report that included the billing periods for January to August 1999. The savings for the earlier period were 48.0% of the audit-estimated savings that means compared with 60.8% for the current period. In general has been an improvement in the energy saving in most of the facilities. The cases where are observed negative savings are the Minimum Security Jail, where is known that the area was increased significantly, the Arena Hall, where the modeling can be normalized due to kind of use of this facility, and the Road and bridges Shop, which looks to be operated more time in this period

    Isotropization of Bianchi type models and a new FRW solution in Brans-Dicke theory

    Using scaled variables we are able to integrate an equation valid for isotropic and anisotropic Bianchi type I, V, IX models in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory. We analyze known and new solutions for these models in relation with the possibility that anisotropic models asymptotically isotropize, and/or possess inflationary properties.     A SAURON study of dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster: kinematics and stellar populations

    Dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) are the most common galaxy type in nearby galaxy clusters; even so, many of their basic properties have yet to be quantified. Here we present the results of our study of 4 Virgo dwarf ellipticals obtained with the SAURON integral field unit on the William Herschel Telescope (La Palma, Spain). While traditional long-slit observations are likely to miss more complicated kinematic features, with SAURON we are able to study both kinematics and stellar populations in two dimensions, obtaining a much more detailed view of the mass distribution and star formation histories. What is visible even in such a small sample is that dEs are not a uniform group, not only morphologically, but also as far as their kinematic and stellar population properties are concerned. We find the presence of substructures, varying degrees of flattening and of rotation, as well as differences in age and metallicity gradients. We confirm that two of our galaxies are significantly flattened, yet non-rotating objects, which makes them likely triaxial systems. The comparison between the dwarf and the giant groups shows that dEs could be a low-mass extension of Es in the sense that they do seem to follow the same trends with mass.     ResumenEl síndrome de intestino corto (SIC) se refiere a la suma de alteraciones funcionales que resultan de una reducción crítica en la longitud del intestino, y que en ausencia de un tratamiento adecuado se manifiestan con diarrea crónica, deshidratación crónica, desnutrición, pérdida de peso, deficiencia de nutrimentos y electrolitos, así como falla para crecer que se presenta con mayor frecuencia durante el periodo neonatal. El objetivo de este artículo es realizar una revisión de la literatura médica sobre la definición, las causas más frecuentes de SIC así como entender la fisiopatología, los factores pronósticos y tratamiento.Se realizó una búsqueda de artículos en PubMed, considerando la información existente en niños con SIC de 20 años hasta la fecha, utilizando las palabras clave “síndrome de intestino corto”. De un total de 784 artículos potenciales, se realizó una selección de 82 artículos donde realizamos la revisión de la literatura médica. Los pacientes con SIC son todo un reto para su tratamiento, por lo que se debe establecer un manejo multidisciplinario enfocado en mantener un soporte nutricional óptimo que cubra las necesidades para crecimiento, desarrollo y asimismo, disminuir al máximo la presencia de complicaciones a corto, mediano y largo plazo. El diagnóstico y manejo de un niño con SIC, implica un equipo de profesionales expertos en el manejo gastroenterológico, pediátrico y nutricional. El pronóstico del niño estará en función al manejo oportuno, así como longitud de la resección intestinal y presencia o no de válvula ileocecal.AbstractShort bowel syndrome (SBS) refers to the sum of the functional alterations that are the result of a critical reduction in the length of the intestine, which in the absence of adequate treatment, presents as chronic diarrhea, chronic dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, nutriment and electrolyte deficiency, along with a failure to grow that is present with greater frequency during the neonatal period. The aim was to carry out a review of the literature encompassing the definition and the most frequent causes of SBS, together with an understanding of its physiopathology, prognostic factors, and treatment.An Internet search of PubMed articles was carried out for the existing information published over the last 20 years on SBS in children, using the keywords “short bowel syndrome”. From a total of 784 potential articles, 82 articles were chosen for the literature review. The treatment of patients presenting with SBS is quite a challenge and therefore it is necessary to establish multidisciplinary management with a focus on maintaining optimal nutritional support that covers the necessities of growth and development and at the same time provides a maximum reduction of short, medium, and long-term complications. The diagnosis and treatment of a child with SBS require a team of professionals that are experts in gastroenterologic, pediatric, and nutritional management. The outcome for the child will be directly related to opportune management, as well as to the length of the intestinal resection and the presence or absence of the ileocecal valve

    Pesticide Exposure Alters Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Levels in Mexican Agricultural Workers

    Organophosphorous pesticides (OPs) are suspected of altering reproductive function by reducing brain acetylcholinesterase activity and monoamine levels, thus impairing hypothalamic and/or pituitary endocrine functions and gonadal processes. Our objective was to evaluate in a longitudinal study the association between OP exposure and serum levels of pituitary and sex hormones. Urinary OP metabolite levels were measured by gas–liquid chromatography, and serum pituitary and sex hormone levels by enzymatic immunoassay and radioimmunoassay in 64 men. A total of 147 urine and blood samples were analyzed for each parameter. More than 80% of the participants had at least one OP metabolite in their urine samples. The most frequent metabolite found was diethylthiophosphate (DETP; 55%), followed by diethylphosphate (DEP; 46%), dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP; 32%), and dimethyldithiophosphate (DMDTP; 31%). However, the metabolites detected at higher concentrations were DMTP, DEP, DMDTP, and dimethylphosphate. There was a high proportion of individuals with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations outside the range of normality (48%). The average FSH serum levels were higher during the heavy pesticide spraying season. However, a multivariate analysis of data collected in all periods showed that serum FSH levels were negatively associated with urinary concentrations of both DMTP and DMDTP, whereas luteinizing hormone (LH) was negatively associated with DMTP. We observed no significant associations between estradiol or testosterone serum levels with OP metabolites. The hormonal disruption in agricultural workers presented here, together with results from experimental animal studies, suggests that OP exposure disrupts the hypothalamic–pituitary endocrine function and also indicates that FSH and LH are the hormones most affected

    Mapping Satellite Inherent Optical Properties Index in Coastal Waters of the Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico)

    [EN] The Yucatan Peninsula hosts worldwide-known tourism destinations that concentrate most of the Mexico tourism activity. In this region, tourism has exponentially increased over the last years, including wildlife oriented tourism. Rapid tourism development, involving the consequent construction of hotels and tourist commodities, is associated with domestic sewage discharges from septic tanks. In this karstic environment, submarine groundwater discharges are very important and highly vulnerable to anthropogenic pollution. Nutrient loadings are linked to harmful algal blooms, which are an issue of concern to local and federal authorities due to their recurrence and socioeconomic and human health costs. In this study, we used satellite products from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) to calculate and map the satellite Inherent Optical Properties (IOP) Index. We worked with different scenarios considering both holiday and hydrological seasons. Our results showed that the satellite IOP Index allows one to build baseline information in a sustainable mid-term or long-term basis which is key for ecosystem-based management.This research was funded by CONACYT with a doctorate scholarship to Jesús A.     This report begins with a complete summary of the energy, demand and cost savings for each of the 12 sites being analyzed. This summary is followed by a two-page report for each site. The report concludes with an appendix that describes a comparison between analysis of the hourly data and of the monthly data for the Records Complex.This report presents the energy and dollar savings for the period July 2000 - June 2001 for 12 Dallas County facilities that have been retrofit by Enershop. The savings for this period total 745,046,whichrepresent73.2745,046, which represent 73.2% of the audit estimated savings. The electric demand savings are 261,517 and the electric usage savings are $483,529. The savings have improved somewhat from the previous report that included the billing periods for April - June 2000. The savings for the earlier period were 62.6% of the audit estimated savings compared with 73.2% for the current period
