The Geopolitical Context of Chamorro Cultural Preservation in Guam, U.S.A.
An unincorporated Pacific Island territory of the United States, Guam has been under American rule since 1 898. While proudly Chamorro, the descendants of indigenous islanders have been American citizens since 1 950. U.S. foreign policy, Americanization of island institutions, immigration flows from Asia and Micronesia, and economic uncertainty present challenges to the perpetuation of Chamorro culture-a syncretic blend of indigenous, Spanish, and American influences that has endured through centuries of foreign domination. As a gateway from the East to the United States and a frequent destination for Micronesian immigrants from the Compacts of Free Association, Guam regularly receives immigrants from Asia and other Micronesian islands. Many immigrants arrive on Guam to fill labor shortages as professionals or construction workers, while others arrive with limited resources and skills that don\u27t easily transfer across cultures. Adding to this mix, a major U.S. military build-up is underway to transform Guam into a forward base in the Pacific. This article provides a case study of Guam through an overview of historical influences on Chamorro culture, a description of the island\u27s contemporary multicultural society, and a discussion of current geopolitical and social forces impacting Chamorro culture in the land where America\u27s day begins. Modelling incomplete fusion dynamics of weakly-bound nuclei at near-barrier energies
The classical dynamical model for reactions induced by weakly-bound nuclei at
near-barrier energies is developed further. It allows a quantitative study of
the role and importance of incomplete fusion dynamics in asymptotic
observables, such as the population of high-spin states in reaction products as
well as the angular distribution of direct alpha-production. Model calculations
indicate that incomplete fusion is an effective mechanism for populating
high-spin states, and its contribution to the direct alpha production yield
diminishes with decreasing energy towards the Coulomb barrier. It also becomes
notably separated in angles from the contribution of no-capture breakup events.
This should facilitate the experimental disentanglement of these competing

Prototype Graphs for radiative Corrections to Polarized Chargino or Neutralino Production in Electron-Positron Annihilation
We present the contributions from all types of one-loop corrections to the
scattering amplitude for the pair production of polarized charginos or
neutralinos from polarized electron-positron annihilation. The contributions
are classified in terms of ``prototypes'' distinguished by the number of
particles inside the loops and their spins. The results are quoted in terms of
the Veltman-Passarino functions in terms of general couplings and internal
masses. The results can therefore be applied to any supersymmetric extension of
the Standard Model or indeed to any polarized fermion pair production process

Series of broad resonances in atomic three-body systems
We re-examine the series of resonances found earlier in atomic three-body
systems by solving the Faddeev-Merkuriev integral equations. These resonances
are rather broad and line-up at each threshold with gradually increasing gaps,
the same way for all thresholds and irrespective of the spatial symmetry. We
relate these resonances to the Gailitis mechanism, which is a consequence of

Heathland Restoration Techniques: Ecological Consequences for Plant-Soil and Plant-Animal Interactions
We compare the soil and plant community development during heathland restoration on improved farmland when achieved
through soil stripping with that achieved through soil acidification. We also test the potential for toxic metals to be made more available to plant and animal species as a result of these treatments. Acidification with elemental sulphur was found to be more effective than soil stripping for establishing an ericaceous sward despite the high levels of phosphate still present within the soil.However, both soil acidification and soil stripping were found to have the potential to increase the availability of potentially toxic metals. Acidification increased uptake of both aluminium and zinc in two common plant species Agrostis capillaris and Rumex acetosella and decreased the abundance of surface active spiders.
