The Religion of the Non-Jurors and the Early British Enlightenment: a study of Henry Dodwell
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The article considers the fundamental motivations and associated theological thought of
those involved in the Non-Juring schism in the Church of England in the period after the
Revolution of 1688. It indicates and exemplifies how that thought is to be related to wider
intellectual conflicts of the period, considered as constituting an early phase of Enlightenment/
Counter-Enlightenment debate. The works of the leading Non-Juror theologian, Henry
Dodwell, and in particular his writings on the destiny of the soul, serve as an area of focus.
Extensive reference is also made to the equally prominent Non-Juror, Charles Leslie.

Thomas Allies, John Henry Newman and Providentalist History
Cataloged from PDF version of article. This article discusses and evaluates the historiographical work of a leading Oxford
convert and Ultramontane, Thomas Allies (1813 1903). An evaluation of Allies
by the criteria of the Ultramontane scholarship he endeavoured to practise allows
the article to offer an illustration of the difficulty in establishing and maintaining
an autonomous Catholic scholarship during the nineteenth century’s secularising
development of academic activity. It also allows substantial description of the
patterns of nineteenth-century Catholic historical thought, noting the strength of
its commitment to providentialism and, in particular, its apocalyptic character.
An examination of the influences brought to bear on the subject’s thought during
the formative period of his development as an historian, through his own study
and his close friendship with John Henry Newman, indicates the reasons for
Allies’s ultimate failure either to create a clear and stimulating product of the
Ultramontane historical vision or to achieve an academic or popular reputation
as an historian. The article argues that an unresolved conflict, between Allies’s
inclination towards a providentialist historiography consistent with his commitment
to a Catholic counter-culture and his willingness to accept, under Newman’s
guidance, contemporary secular historiographical norms, offers substantial
explanation of this failur
Anciennete among the Non-Jurors: a study of Henry Dodwell
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The article offers a study of the theological method of Henry Dodwell, the most
distinguished British savant of the late Stuart period and a leading figure in the Non-Juring
movement. The study takes the form of arguments for the extension of the contemporary
dispute between the Ancients and Moderns, in its historiographical dimension, into the field of
divinity; for substantial modification of the claims made in discussions of the dispute about the
inherent conflict between the Renaissance’s desire for revivification of the past and its
historical scholarship; and for reconsideration of the relationship between 17th century critical
scholarship and the Enlightenment.

Cloud Chamber Investigation of Anomalous θ^0 Particles
Eighteen anomalous θ^0, (θ^0_(anom)), decay events observed in the California Institute of Technology magnet cloud chambers have been analyzed. Many of these decays are dynamically inconsistent with the τ^0→π^++π^−+π^0 scheme, but most are consistent with the decay processes: θ^0_(anom)→π^++π^−+γ, π^±+μ^∓+ν, and π^±+e^∓+ν. However, at least one event is inconsistent with each decay scheme. From the locations of the decays in the cloud chamber, the lifetime is found to be significantly longer than that of the normal θ^0 particle, called here the θ^0_(π2) particle. Other differences in the behavior of the θ0anom and θ^0_(π2) particles were also observed in the (a) momentum distributions, (b) origin locations, (c) relative numbers of θ^0_(anom) and θ^0_(π2) particles traveling upward, and (d) the types of V particles produced in association with the θ^0_(anom) and θ^0_(π2). It is concluded that not all the θ^0_(anom) decays can result from alternate decay modes of the θ^0_(π2). Moreover, many decays can be neither τ^0 decays nor alternate decays of the θ^0_(π2).
The characteristics of the θ^0_2 particle proposed by Gell-Mann and Pais are consistent with those of the θ^0_(anom) particle, with the possible exception of the observed types of associations. An estimate was made of the relative number of θ^0_(anom) to θ^0_(π2) particles observed to decay in the cloud chamber. If all θ^0_(anom) decays are assumed to arise from decays of the θ^0_2 particle, then a lower limit for the θ^0_2 lifetime is found to be about 10^(−9) sec
Estimating the Economic Gains for States as a Result of Medicaid Coverage Expansions for Adults
This policy research brief examines the Medicaid eligibility expansions under the pending legislative proposals, including the House Tri-Committee bill, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee bill and the Senate Finance Committee bill. Using new Census Bureau data, the researchers find that under both the House and Senate Finance Committee proposals, about 9.6 million nonelderly adults would gain Medicaid eligibility by 2014. Furthermore, the federal and state expenditures are less than Medicaid\u27s positive impact on the economy amounting in a return of three dollars in new business activities for every dollar of state Medicaid investment. Because Medicaid is designed to assist states with lower incomes, the positive economic impact effects of a Medicaid expansion will be especially pronounced in southern, southwestern and Plains states
The Causal Structure of Emotions in Aristotle: Hylomorphism, Causal Interaction between Mind and Body, and Intentionality
Recently, a strong hylomorphic reading of Aristotelian emotions has been put forward, one that allegedly eliminates the problem of causal interaction between soul and body. Taking the presentation of emotions in de An. I 1 as a starting point and basic thread, but relying also on the discussion of Rh. II, I will argue that this reading only takes into account two of the four causes of emotions, and that, if all four of them
are included into the picture, then a causal interaction of mind and body remains within Aristotelian emotions, independent of how strongly their hylomorphism is understood. Beyond the discussion with this recent reading, the analysis proposed of the fourfold causal structure of emotions is also intended as a hermeneutical starting point for a comprehensive analysis of particular emotions in Aristotle. Through the different causes Aristotle seems to account for many aspects of the complex phenomenon of emotion, including its physiological causes, its mental causes, and its intentional object
Pinholes May Mimic Tunneling
Interest in magnetic-tunnel junctions has prompted a re-examination of
tunneling measurements through thin insulating films. In any study of
metal-insulator-metal trilayers, one tries to eliminate the possibility of
pinholes (small areas over which the thickness of the insulator goes to zero so
that the upper and lower metals of the trilayer make direct contact). Recently,
we have presented experimental evidence that ferromagnet-insulator-normal
trilayers that appear from current-voltage plots to be pinhole-free may
nonetheless in some cases harbor pinholes. Here, we show how pinholes may arise
in a simple but realistic model of film deposition and that purely classical
conduction through pinholes may mimic one aspect of tunneling, the exponential
decay in current with insulating thickness.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, plain TeX; submitted to Journal of Applied
