Apparatus and method of inserting a microelectrode in body tissue or the like using vibration means
An arrangement for and method of inserting a glass microelectrode having a tip in the micron range into body tissue is presented. The arrangement includes a microelectrode. The top of the microelectrode is attached to the diaphragm center of a first speaker. The microelectrode tip is brought into contact with the tissue by controlling a micromanipulator. Thereafter, an audio signal is applied to the speaker to cause the microelectrode to vibrate and thereby pierce the tissue surface without breaking the microelectrode tip. Thereafter, the tip is inserted into the tissue to the desired depth by operating the micromanipulator with the microelectrode in a vibratory or non-vibratory state
System and method for moving a probe to follow movements of tissue
An apparatus is described for moving a probe that engages moving living tissue such as a heart or an artery that is penetrated by the probe, which moves the probe in synchronism with the tissue to maintain the probe at a constant location with respect to the tissue. The apparatus includes a servo positioner which moves a servo member to maintain a constant distance from a sensed object while applying very little force to the sensed object, and a follower having a stirrup at one end resting on a surface of the living tissue and another end carrying a sensed object adjacent to the servo member. A probe holder has one end mounted on the servo member and another end which holds the probe
Universal trapping scaling on the unstable manifold for a collisionless electrostatic mode
An amplitude equation for an unstable mode in a collisionless plasma is
derived from the dynamics on the two-dimensional unstable manifold of the
equilibrium. The mode amplitude decouples from the phase due to the
spatial homogeneity of the equilibrium, and the resulting one-dimensional
dynamics is analyzed using an expansion in . As the linear growth rate
vanishes, the expansion coefficients diverge; a rescaling
of the mode amplitude absorbs these
singularities and reveals that the mode electric field exhibits trapping
scaling as . The dynamics for

Extended X-Ray Emission from QSOs
We report Chandra ACIS observations of the fields of 4 QSOs showing strong
extended optical emission-line regions. Two of these show no evidence for
significant extended X-ray emission. The remaining two fields, those of 3C
249.1 and 4C 37.43, show discrete (but resolved) X-ray sources at distances
ranging from ~10 to ~40 kpc from the nucleus. In addition, 4C 37.43 also may
show a region of diffuse X-ray emission extending out to ~65 kpc and centered
on the QSO. It has been suggested that extended emission-line regions such as
these may originate in the cooling of a hot intragroup medium. We do not detect
a general extended medium in any of our fields, and the upper limits we can
place on its presence indicate cooling times of at least a few 10^9 years. The
discrete X-ray emission sources we detect cannot be explained as the X-ray jets
frequently seen associated with radio-loud quasars, nor can they be due to
electron scattering of nuclear emission. The most plausible explanation is that
they result from high-speed shocks from galactic superwinds resulting either
from a starburst in the QSO host galaxy or from the activation of the QSO
itself. Evidence from densities and velocities found from studies of the
extended optical emission around QSOs also supports this interpretation.Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 9 pages including 5 figure
Scaling and singularities in the entrainment of globally-coupled oscillators
The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled
oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase
dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a
Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the
diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from
the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the
unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly
saturated mode on the linear growth rate . In general
we find where is the
diffusion coefficient and is the mode number of the unstable mode. The
unusual factor arises from a singularity in the cubic term of
the amplitude equation.Comment: 11 pages (Revtex); paper submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Nonlinear saturation of electrostatic waves: mobile ions modify trapping scaling
The amplitude equation for an unstable electrostatic wave in a multi-species
Vlasov plasma has been derived. The dynamics of the mode amplitude is
studied using an expansion in ; in particular, in the limit
, the singularities in the expansion coefficients are
analyzed to predict the asymptotic dependence of the electric field on the
linear growth rate . Generically , as
, but in the limit of infinite ion mass or for
instabilities in reflection-symmetric systems due to real eigenvalues the more
familiar trapping scaling is predicted.Comment: 13 pages (Latex/RevTex), 4 postscript encapsulated figures which are
