A flight evaluation of a trailing anemometer for low-speed calibrations of airspeed systems on research aircraft
Research airspeed systems on three low-speed general aviation airplanes were calibrated by the trailing anemometer method. Each airplane was fitted with an NASA pitot-static pressure tube mounted on either a nose or wing boom. The uncalibrated airspeed systems contained residual static-pressure position errors which were too large for high-accuracy flight research applications. The trailing anemometer calibration was in agreement with the tower flyby calibration for the one aircraft for which the comparison was made. The continuous deceleration technique for the trailing anemometer method offers reduced test time with no appreciable loss of accuracy for airspeed systems with pitot-static system lag characteristics similar to those described
Application of inertial instruments for DSN antenna pointing and tracking
The feasibility of using inertial instruments to determine the pointing attitude of the NASA Deep Space Network antennas is examined. The objective is to obtain 1 mdeg pointing knowledge in both blind pointing and tracking modes to facilitate operation of the Deep Space Network 70 m antennas at 32 GHz. A measurement system employing accelerometers, an inclinometer, and optical gyroscopes is proposed. The initial pointing attitude is established by determining the direction of the local gravity vector using the accelerometers and the inclinometer, and the Earth's spin axis using the gyroscopes. Pointing during long-term tracking is maintained by integrating the gyroscope rates and augmenting these measurements with knowledge of the local gravity vector. A minimum-variance estimator is used to combine measurements to obtain the antenna pointing attitude. A key feature of the algorithm is its ability to recalibrate accelerometer parameters during operation. A survey of available inertial instrument technologies is also given
Jamming transitions in a schematic model of suspension rheology
We study the steady-state response to applied stress in a simple scalar model
of sheared colloids. Our model is based on a schematic (F2) model of the glass
transition, with a memory term that depends on both stress and shear rate. For
suitable parameters, we find transitions from a fluid to a nonergodic, jammed
state, showing zero flow rate in an interval of applied stress. Although the
jammed state is a glass, we predict that jamming transitions have an analytical
structure distinct from that of the conventional mode coupling glass
transition. The static jamming transition we discuss is also distinct from

An experimental and theoretical investigation of deposition patterns from an agricultural airplane
A flight test program has been conducted with a representative agricultural airplane to provide data for validating a computer program model which predicts aerially applied particle deposition. Test procedures and the data from this test are presented and discussed. The computer program features are summarized, and comparisons of predicted and measured particle deposition are presented. Applications of the computer program for spray pattern improvement are illustrated
Implications of Shock Wave Experiments with Precompressed Materials for Giant Planet Interiors
This work uses density functional molecular dynamics simulations of fluid
helium at high pressure to examine how shock wave experiments with
precompressed samples can help characterizing the interior of giant planets. In
particular, we analyze how large of a precompression is needed to probe a
certain depth in a planet's gas envelope. We find that precompressions of up to
0.1, 1.0, 10, or 100 GPa are needed to characterized 2.5, 5.9, 18, to 63% of

A prototypical model for tensional wrinkling in thin sheets
The buckling and wrinkling of thin films has recently seen a surge of interest among physicists, biologists, mathematicians and engineers. This has been triggered by the growing interest in developing technologies at ever decreasing scales and the resulting necessity to control the mechanics of tiny structures, as well as by the realization that morphogenetic processes, such as the tissue-shaping instabilities occurring in animal epithelia or plant leaves, often emerge from mechanical instabilities of cell sheets. While the most basic buckling instability of uniaxially compressed plates was understood by Euler more than 200 years ago, recent experiments on nanometrically thin (ultrathin) films have shown significant deviations from predictions of standard buckling theory. Motivated by this puzzle, we introduce here a theoretical model that allows for a systematic analysis of wrinkling in sheets far from their instability threshold. We focus on the simplest extension of Euler buckling that exhibits wrinkles of finite length - a sheet under axisymmetric tensile loads. This geometry, whose first study is attributed to Lam´e, allows us to construct\ud
a phase diagram that demonstrates the dramatic variation of wrinkling patterns from near-threshold to far-from-threshold conditions. Theoretical arguments and comparison to experiments show that for thin sheets the far-from-threshold regime is expected to emerge under extremely small compressive loads, emphasizing the relevance of our analysis for nanomechanics applications
