Discovery of Pulsed X-ray Emission from the SMC Transient RX J0117.6-7330
We report on the detection of pulsed, broad-band, X-ray emission from the
transient source RX J0117.6-7330. The pulse period of 22 seconds is detected by
the ROSAT/PSPC instrument in a 1992 Sep 30 - Oct 2 observation and by the
CGRO/BATSE instrument during the same epoch. Hard X-ray pulsations are
detectable by BATSE for approximately 100 days surrounding the ROSAT
observation (1992 Aug 28 - Dec 8). The total directly measured X-ray luminosity
during the ROSAT observation is 1.0E38 (d/60 kpc)^2 ergs s-1. The pulse
frequency increases rapidly during the outburst, with a peak spin-up rate of
1.2E-10 Hz s-1 and a total frequency change 1.8%. The pulsed percentage is
11.3% from 0.1-2.5 keV, increasing to at least 78% in the 20-70 keV band. These
results establish RX J0117.6-7330 as a transient Be binary system.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, aasms, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Expected characteristics of the subclass of Supernova Gamma-ray Bursts (S-GRBs)
The spatial and temporal coincidence between the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 980425
and supernova (SN) 1998bw has prompted speculation that there exists a class of
GRBs produced by SNe (``S-GRBs''). Robust arguments for the existence of a
relativistic shock have been presented on the basis of radio observations. A
physical model based on the radio observations lead us to propose the following
characteristics of supernovae GRBs (S-GRBs): 1) prompt radio emission and
implied brightness temperature near or below the inverse Compton limit, 2) high
expansion velocity of the optical photosphere as derived from lines widths and
energy release larger than usual, 3) no long-lived X-ray afterglow, and 4) a
single pulse (SP) GRB profile. Radio studies of previous SNe show that only
type Ib and Ic potentially satisfy the first condition. Accordingly we have
investigated proposed associations of GRBs and SNe finding no convincing
evidence (mainly to paucity of data) to confirm any single connection of a SN
with a GRB. If there is a more constraining physical basis for the burst
time-history of S-GRBs beyond that of the SP requirement, we suggest the 1% of
light curves in the BATSE catalogue similar to that of GRB 980425 may
constitute the subclass. Future optical follow-up of bursts with similar
profiles should confirm if such GRBs originate from some fraction of SN type

A kinetic model of municipal sludge degradation during non-catalytic wet oxidation
Wet oxidation is a successful process for the treatment of municipal sludge. In addition, the resulting effluent from wet oxidation is a useful carbon source for subsequent biological nutrient removal processes in wastewater treatment. Owing to limitations with current kinetic models, this study produced a kinetic model which predicts the concentrations of key intermediate components during wet oxidation. The model was regressed from lab-scale experiments and then subsequently validated using data from a wet oxidation pilot plant. The model was shown to be accurate in predicting the concentrations of each component, and produced good results when applied to a plant 500 times larger in size. A statistical study was undertaken to investigate the validity of the regressed model parameters. Finally the usefulness of the model was demonstrated by suggesting optimum operating conditions such that volatile fatty acids were maximised
Discovery of 16.6 and 25.5 s Pulsations from the Small Magellanic Cloud
We report the serendipitous detection of two previously unreported pulsars
from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud, with periods of 16.6 and 25.5
seconds. The detections are based on archival PCA data from the Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer (RXTE). The observation leading to these detections occurred in
September 2000 extending over 2.1 days with an exposure of 121 ks. A possible
identification of the 16.6 s pulsar with an X-ray source RX J0051.8-7310 seen
by both ROSAT and ASCA imaging X-ray satellites is presented.Comment: 9 pages with 3 figures. Submitted to ApJ Letter
Three New Long Period X-ray Pulsars Discovered in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The Small Magellanic Cloud is increasingly an invaluable laboratory for
studying accreting and isolated X-ray pulsars. We add to the class of compact
SMC objects by reporting the discovery of three new long period X-ray pulsars
detected with the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. The pulsars, with periods of
152, 304 and 565 seconds, all show hard X-ray spectra over the range from 0.6 -
7.5 keV. The source positions of the three pulsars are consistent with known
H-alpha emission sources, indicating they are likely to be Be type X-ray binary

80-Gb/s OTDM system analysis of a vertical microcavity-based saturable absorber for the enhancement of pulse pedestal suppression
In future high-speed optical time-division-multiplexed (OTDM) systems, an important factor that needs to be considered for optical pulse generation schemes is the impact of pulse pedestals on the overall system performance. The results presented in this letter are two-fold; first, the impact due to the height of pulse pedestals in an 80-Gb/s OTDM system are established. Second, a solution is provided to overcome these high pedestal levels through the use of a vertical microcavity saturable absorber, which can significantly reduce the pulse pedestal level and give enhanced system performanc
Pulse source for 80 Gb/s systems using a gain-wwitched laser diode followed by a nonlinearly chirped grating
This work presents the generation of 3.5 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 10 GHz and the optimization of the pulse spectrum. The output pulses are near transform limited and have pulse pedestals that are virtually eliminated to 35 dB down from the peak of the pulse, thus providing a source suitable for use in 80 Gb/s OTDM systems
Movements and spawning of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) off Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
With a focus on white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus), a concurrent electronic tagging and larval sampling effort was conducted in the vicinity of Mona Passage (off southeast Hispaniola), Dominican Republic, during April and May 2003. Objectives were 1) to characterize the horizontal and vertical movement of adults captured from the area by using pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs); and 2) by
means of larval sampling, to investigate whether fish were reproducing. Trolling from a sportfishing vessel yielded eight adult white marlin and one blue marlin (Makaira nigricans); PSAT tags were deployed on all but one of these individuals. The exception was a female white marlin that
was unsuitable for tagging because of injury; the reproductive state of its ovaries was examined histologically. Seven of the PSATs reported data summaries for water depth, temperature, and light levels measured every minute for periods ranging from 28 to 40 days. Displacement of marlin from the location of release to the point of tag pop-up ranged from 3l.6 to 267.7 nautical miles (nmi) and a mean displacement was 3.4 nmi per day for
white marlin. White and blue marlin mean daily displacements appeared constrained compared to the results
of other marlin PSAT tagging studies. White marlin ovarian sections contained postovulatory follicles and final maturation-stage oocytes, which indicated recent and imminent spawning. Neuston tows (n=23) yielded 18
istiophorid larvae: eight were white marlin, four were blue marlin, and six could not be identified to species. We speculate that the constrained movement patterns of adults may be linked to reproductive activity for both marlin species, and, if true, these movement patterns may have
several implications for management. Protection of the potentially important white marlin spawning ground near Mona Passage seems warranted, at least until further studies can be conducted on the temporal and spatial
extent of reproduction and associated adult movement
