    Conservation Conundrum: At-risk Bumble Bees (Bombus spp.) Show Preference for Invasive Tufted Vetch (Vicia cracca) While Foraging in Protected Areas

    In recent decades, some bumble bee species have declined, including in North America. Declines have been reported in species of bumble bees historically present in Ontario, including: yellow bumble bee (Bombus fervidus) (Fabricus, 1798), American bumble bee (Bombus pensylvanicus) (DeGeer, 1773), and yellow-banded bumble bee (Bombus terricola) (Kirby, 1837). Threats contributing to bumble bee population declines include: land-use changes, habitat loss, climate change, pathogen spillover, and pesticide use. A response to the need for action on pollinator preservation in North America has been to encourage ‘bee-friendly’ plantings. Previous studies show differences in common and at-risk bumble bee foraging; however, similar data are unavailable for Ontario. Our research question is whether there is a difference in co-occurring at-risk and common bumble bee (Bombus spp.) floral use (including nectar and pollen collection) in protected areas in southern Ontario. We hypothesize that common and at-risk species forage differently, predicting that at-risk species forage on a limited selection of host plants. We conducted a field survey of sites in southern Ontario, using observational methods to determine bumble bee foraging by species. The results of a redundancy analysis show a difference in foraging between common and at-risk bumblebee species. At-risk bumble bee species show a preference for foraging on invasive, naturalized Vicia cracca (tufted vetch). This finding raises the question of how to preserve or provide forage for at-risk bumble bees, when they show an association with an invasive species often subject to control in protected areas.York University Librarie

    Used infant mattresses and sudden infant death syndrome in Scotland: case-control study

    <P>OBJECTIVE: To examine the proposition that a used infant mattress is associated with an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Scotland (population 5.1 million, with about 53 000 births a year).</P> <P>PARTICIPANTS: 131 infants who died of sudden infant death syndrome between 1 January 1996 and 31 May 2000 and 278 age, season, and obstetric unit matched control infants.</P> <P>MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Routine use of an infant mattress previously used by another child and place of last sleep.</P> <P>RESULTS: Routine use of an infant mattress previously used by another child was significantly associated with an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (multivariate odds ratio 3.07, 95% confidence interval 1.51 to 6.22). Use of a used infant mattress for last sleep was also associated with increased risk (6.10, 2.31 to 16.12). The association was significantly stronger if the mattress was from another home (4.78, 2.08 to 11.0) than if it was from the same home (1.64, 0.64 to 4.2).</P> <P>CONCLUSION: A valid significant association exists between use of a used infant mattress and an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, particularly if the mattress is from another home. Insufficient evidence is available to judge whether this relation is cause and effect.</P&gt

    Importance of Baryon-Baryon Coupling in Hypernuclei

    The ΛN−ΣN\Lambda N - \Sigma N coupling in Λ\Lambda--hypernuclei and ΛΛ−ΞN\Lambda \Lambda - \Xi N coupling in ΛΛ\Lambda \Lambda--hypernuclei produce novel physics not observed in the conventional, nonstrange sector. Effects of Λ↔Σ\Lambda \leftrightarrow \Sigma conversion in Λ3^3_{\Lambda}H are reviewed. The role of ΛN−ΣN\Lambda N - \Sigma N coupling suppression in the A=4,5A=4,5 Λ\Lambda--hypernuclei due to Pauli blocking is highlighted, and the implications for the structure of    Λ10^{10}_{\;\, \Lambda}B are explored. Suppression of ΛΛ−ΞN\Lambda \Lambda - \Xi N conversion in ΛΛ     6^{\;\;\, 6}_{\Lambda \Lambda}He is hypothesized as the reason that the matrix element is small. Measurement of ΛΛ     4^{\;\;\, 4}_{\Lambda \Lambda}H is proposed to investigate the full ΛΛ−ΞN\Lambda \Lambda - \Xi N interaction.     Increasing trap stiffness with position clamping in holographic optical tweezers

    We present a holographic optical tweezers system capable of position clamping multiple particles. Moving an optical trap in response to the trapped object's motion is a powerful technique for optical control and force measurement. We have now realised this experimentally using a Boulder Nonlinear Systems Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) with a refresh rate of 203Hz. We obtain a reduction of 44% in the variance of the bead's position, corresponding to an increase in effective trap stiffness of 77%. This reduction relies on the generation of holograms at high speed. We present software capable of calculating holograms in under 1ms using a graphics processor unit. © 2009 Optical Society of America

    Trunk muscle activity during drop jump performance in adolescent athletes with back pain

    It was with great interest we read the recently published article “Trunk Muscle Activity during Drop Jump Performance in Adolescent Athletes with Back Pain.” Investigating back pain (BP) in adolescents is commendable as there is growing evidence that for many, an experience of BP as early as 14 years of age may relate to ongoing pain in adulthood (Coenen et al., 2017). Indeed, the conventional narrative is changing as individual physical factors such as posture, use of schoolbags, and hypermobility are only weakly associated with adolescent BP. Rather, factors which predict BP at a young age are considered to be multi-dimensional and include gender, negative BP beliefs and poor mental health (O\u27Sullivan et al., 2017; Smith et al., 2017). Mueller et al. (2017) have focused on a single physical factor (trunk muscle activation patterns) drawing inferences regarding BP prevention and treatment. This article prompts consideration of three essential aspects regarding research design and interpretation of findings: 1. Interpreting results from cross-sectional designs 2. Interpreting pain-related differences in motor behavior 3. Translating and conveying scientific results to the end-user (patients, healthcare professionals and policy makers)

    Broad Absorption Line Variability in Radio-Loud Quasars

    We investigate C IV broad absorption line (BAL) variability within a sample of 46 radio-loud quasars (RLQs), selected from SDSS/FIRST data to include both core-dominated (39) and lobe-dominated (7) objects. The sample consists primarily of high-ionization BAL quasars, and a substantial fraction have large BAL velocities or equivalent widths; their radio luminosities and radio-loudness values span ~2.5 orders of magnitude. We have obtained 34 new Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) spectra of 28 BAL RLQs to compare to earlier SDSS data, and we also incorporate archival coverage (primarily dual-epoch SDSS) for a total set of 78 pairs of equivalent width measurements for 46 BAL RLQs, probing rest-frame timescales of ~80-6000 d (median 500 d). In general, only modest changes in the depths of segments of absorption troughs are observed, akin to those seen in prior studies of BAL RQQs. Also similar to previous findings for RQQs, the RLQs studied here are more likely to display BAL variability on longer rest-frame timescales. However, typical values of |Delta_EW| and |Delta_EW|/ are about 40+/-20% lower for BAL RLQs when compared with those of a timescale-matched sample of BAL RQQs. Optical continuum variability is of similar amplitude in BAL RLQs and BAL RQQs; for both RLQs and RQQs, continuum variability tends to be stronger on longer timescales. BAL variability in RLQs does not obviously depend upon their radio luminosities or radio-loudness values, but we do find tentative evidence for greater fractional BAL variability within lobe-dominated RLQs.     Crystal Structure and Chemistry of Topological Insulators

    Topological surface states, a new kind of electronic state of matter, have recently been observed on the cleaved surfaces of crystals of a handful of small band gap semiconductors. The underlying chemical factors that enable these states are crystal symmetry, the presence of strong spin orbit coupling, and an inversion of the energies of the bulk electronic states that normally contribute to the valence and conduction bands. The goals of this review are to briefly introduce the physics of topological insulators to a chemical audience and to describe the chemistry, defect chemistry, and crystal structures of the compounds in this emergent field.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Materials Chemistry, 47 double spaced pages, 9 figure

    FUSE Observations of Outflowing OVI in the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC1705

    We report FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the prototypical dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1705. These data allow us for the first time to probe the coronal-phase gas (T = 10E5 to 10E6 K) that may dominate the radiative cooling of the supernova-heated ISM and thereby determine the dynamical evolution of starburst-driven outflows. We detect a broad (100 km/s) and blueshifted (by 80 km/s) OVI absorption-line arising in the previously-known galactic outflow. The properties of the OVI absorption are inconsistent with the standard superbubble model in which this gas arises in a conductive interface inside the outer shell. We show that the superbubble in NGC 1705 is blowing out of the galaxy ISM. During blow-out, coronal-phase gas can be created by hydrodynamical mixing as hot gas rushes out through fissures in the fragmenting shell of cool gas. As the coronal gas cools radiatively, it can naturally produce the observed OVI column density and outflow speed. The OVI data show that the cooling rate in the coronal-phase gas is less than about 10% of the supernova heating rate. Since the X-ray luminosity from hotter gas is even smaller, we conclude that radiative losses are insignificant. The outflow should be able to vent its metals and kinetic energy out of the galaxy. This process has potentially important implications for the evolution of dwarf galaxies and the IGM.Comment: ApJ (in press
