Global axisymmetric stability analysis for a composite system of two gravitationally coupled scale-free discs

In a composite system of gravitationally coupled stellar and gaseous discs, we perform linear stability analysis for axisymmetric coplanar perturbations using the two-fluid formalism. The background stellar and gaseous discs are taken to be scale-free with all physical variables varying as powers of cylindrical radius rr with compatible exponents. The unstable modes set in as neutral modes or stationary perturbation configurations with angular frequency ω=0\omega=0.Comment: 7 pages using AAS styl

Spin injection from perpendicular magnetized ferromagnetic δ\delta-MnGa into (Al,Ga)As heterostructures

Electrical spin injection from ferromagnetic δ\delta-MnGa into an (Al,Ga)As p-i-n light emitting diode (LED) is demonstrated. The δ\delta-MnGa layers show strong perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy, enabling detection of spin injection at remanence without an applied magnetic field. The bias and temperature dependence of the spin injection are found to be qualitatively similar to Fe-based spin LED devices. A Hanle effect is observed and demonstrates complete depolarization of spins in the semiconductor in a transverse magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

X-ray triple rings around the M87 jets in the central Virgo cluster

The Chandra X-ray data of the central Virgo cluster are re-examined to reveal a triple-ring structure around the galaxy M87, reminiscent of the spectacular triple-ring pattern of the SN1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In the sky plane, the two apparent smaller ellipses are roughly aligned along the M87 jets; the larger ring centers at the M87 nucleus and is likely a circle roughly perpendicular to the M87 jet. Certain similarities of these two triple-ring structures might hint at similar processes that operate in these two systems with entirely different sizes and mass scales. We suspect that a major merging event of two galaxies with nuclear supermassive black holes (SMBHs) might create such a triple-ring structure and drove acoustic and internal gravity waves far and near. The M87 jets are perhaps powered by a spinning SMBH resulting from this catastrophic merging event.Comment: accepted by ApJ

How to observe the Efimov effect

We propose to observe the Efimov effect experimentally by applying an external electric field on atomic three-body systems. We first derive the lowest order effective two-body interaction for two spin zero atoms in the field. Then we solve the three-body problem and search for the extreme spatially extended Efimov states. We use helium trimers as an illustrative numerical example and estimate the necessary field strength to be less than 2.7 V/angstrom.Comment: 4 pages, 2 postscript figures, psfig.sty, revte

Selfsimilar solutions in a sector for a quasilinear parabolic equation

We study a two-point free boundary problem in a sector for a quasilinear parabolic equation. The boundary conditions are assumed to be spatially and temporally "self-similar" in a special way. We prove the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic stability of an expanding solution which is self-similar at discrete times. We also study the existence and uniqueness of a shrinking solution which is self-similar at discrete times.Comment: 23 page

New variable separation approach: application to nonlinear diffusion equations

The concept of the derivative-dependent functional separable solution, as a generalization to the functional separable solution, is proposed. As an application, it is used to discuss the generalized nonlinear diffusion equations based on the generalized conditional symmetry approach. As a consequence, a complete list of canonical forms for such equations which admit the derivative-dependent functional separable solutions is obtained and some exact solutions to the resulting equations are described.Comment: 19 pages, 2 fig

Study on the multiple dendrite growth of Al – Si binary alloy using phase – field method (PFM)

Phase – field method offers the prospect of carrying out realistic numerical calculation on dendrite growth in metallic systems. The dendritic growth process of Al – 0,02mole % Si binary alloy was simulated by the coupling method of phase field and solute field. The effects of anisotropic parameters on the growth morphology of dendrite were studied. The results show that with the increase of the anisotropy magnitude, the secondary dendrite arms are more developed, and the dendrite tip is obvious oriented. For the multiple dendrite growth, the dendrites present the morphology from the tip splitting to the dendrite tip oriented. The multi dendritic branching and remelting states of Al – Si alloy were obtained and the directional solidification remelting and solute segregation were obtained under different anisotropic index conditions. And numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the growth of single and multiple dendrites under coupled conditions of phase field, solute field, and flow field

Genetic differentiation in Japanese flounder in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and mitochondrial DNA markers

The population structure of Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in the Yellow and East China Seas were analyzed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequencing. A total of 390 reproducible bands were generated by 10 AFLP primer combinations in two populations collected from the coasts of Qingdao (located at the Yellow Sea) and Zhoushan (located at the East China Sea). The percentage of polymorphic loci (P), Nei’s genetic diversity (H) and Shannon’s information index (I) values were higher in the Qingdao population (P = 72.85%, H = 0.243 and I = 0.364) than those in the Zhoushan population (P = 56.35%, H = 0.189 and I = 0.284). The genetic diversity reduction in the Zhoushan population may be attributed to fishing pressure and habitat loss in this area. Based on the COI sequencing analysis, a total of 25 polymorphic sites were examined, and 15 haplotypes were identified in the two populations. The haplotype diversity (h) and nucleotide diversity (π) values in the Qingdao population were 0.746 ± 0.0728 and 0.00334 ± 0.00103, respectively. The corresponding values in the Zhoushan population were 0.712 ± 0.0470 and 0.00318 ± 0.00049. Both the AFLP and mtDNA data revealed significant genetic differentiation between the two populations. The present study discussed the factors that may result in genetic differentiation between the populations in the Yellow and East China Seas. Keywords: Japanese flounder, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, genetic diversity, population structur
