    Using particle shape to induce tilted and bistable liquid crystal anchoring

    We use Monte Carlo simulations of hard Gaussian overlap (HGO) particles symmetrically confined in slab geometry to investigate the role of particle-substrate interactions on liquid crystalline anchoring. Despite the restriction here to purely steric interactions and smooth substrates, a range of behaviours are captured, including tilted anchoring and homeotropic-planar bistability. These macroscopic behaviours are all achieved through appropriate tuning of the microscopics of the HGO-substrate interaction, based upon non-additive descriptions for the HGO-substrate shape parameter.</p

    G359.95-0.04: Pulsar Candidate Near Sgr A*

    We report the discovery of a prominent nonthermal X-ray feature located near the Galactic center that we identify as an energetic pulsar wind nebula. This feature, G359.95-0.04, lies 1 lyr north of Sgr A* (in projection), is comet-like in shape, and has a power law spectrum that steepens with increasing distance from the putative pulsar. The distinct spectral and spatial X-ray characteristics of the feature are similar to those belonging the rare class of ram-pressure confined pulsar wind nebulae. The luminosity of the nebula at the distance of \sgra, consistent with the inferred X-ray absorptions, is 1 10^{34} ergs s^{-1} in the 2--10 keV energy band. The cometary tail extends back to a region centered at the massive stellar complex IRS 13 and surrounded by enhanced diffuse X-ray emission, which may represent an associated supernova remnant. Furthermore, the inverse Compton scattering of the strong ambient radiation by the nebula consistently explains the observed TeV emission from the Galactic center.     Gamma-ray bursts: postburst evolution of fireballs

    The postburst evolution of fireballs that produce γ\gamma-ray bursts is studied, assuming the expansion of fireballs to be adiabatic and relativistic. Numerical results as well as an approximate analytic solution for the evolution are presented. Due to adoption of a new relation among tt, RR and γ\gamma (see the text), our results differ markedly from the previous studies. Synchrotron radiation from the shocked interstellar medium is attentively calculated, using a convenient set of equations. The observed X-ray flux of GRB afterglows can be reproduced easily. Although the optical afterglows seem much more complicated, our results can still present a rather satisfactory approach to observations. It is also found that the expansion will no longer be highly relativistic about 4 days after the main GRB. We thus suggest that the marginally relativistic phase of the expansion should be investigated so as to check the afterglows observed a week or more later.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS in pres

    Conodont biostratigraphy of the Crawford Group, Southern Uplands, Scotland

    Extensive new conodont collections from the Crawford Group, the oldest succession in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, support the previously documented biostratigraphical ages for the included formations. The Raven Gill Formation is lower Whitlandian, Arenig (comparable in age to the Dounans Limestone in the Highland Border Complex) and the Kirkton Formation is latest Llandeilian-Aurelucian, Llanvirn to Caradoc in age. It is concluded that there is a significant stratigraphical gap within the Crawford Group. The restricted and probably fault-bounded nature of the Raven Gill outcrops suggests that these may represent olistoliths within a mélange of Llandeilian-Aurelucian age. The chert-bearing succession of the Northern Belt of the Southern Uplands thus represents the juxtaposed sedimentary records of two entirely separate basins – the oldest pre-dates the Grampian assembly of the Laurentian margin, and the younger, the Northern Belt Basin sensu stricto, entirely post-dates this event

    Electron-doped phosphorene: A potential monolayer superconductor

    We predict by first-principles calculations that the electron-doped phosphorene is a potential BCS-like superconductor. The stretching modes at the Brillouin-zone center are remarkably softened by the electron-doping, which results in the strong electron-phonon coupling. The superconductivity can be introduced by a doped electron density (n2Dn_{2D}) above 1.3×10141.3 \times10^{14} cm−2^{-2}, and may exist over the liquid helium temperature when n2D>2.6×1014n_{2D}>2.6 \times10^{14} cm−2^{-2}. The maximum critical temperature is predicted to be higher than 10 K. The superconductivity of phosphorene will significantly broaden the applications of this novel material

    Origin of the n-type conductivity of InN: the role of positively charged dislocations

    As-grown InN is known to exhibit high unintentional n-type conductivity. Hall measurements from a range of high-quality single-crystalline epitaxially grown InN films reveal a dramatic reduction in the electron density (from low 1019 to low 1017 cm–3) with increasing film thickness (from 50 to 12 000 nm). The combination of background donors from impurities and the extreme electron accumulation at InN surfaces is shown to be insufficient to reproduce the measured film thickness dependence of the free-electron density. When positively charged nitrogen vacancies (VN+) along dislocations are also included, agreement is obtained between the calculated and experimental thickness dependence of the free-electron concentration
