    A letter from Albertus C. Van Raalte to Philip Phelps; it informs Phelps that Dr. M. Cohen Stuart is arriving on the last train from Grand Rapids that evening. Cohen Stuart interviewed Van Raalte during this visit. He then wrote up the interview and published it in his book. The interview gives us a very good description of Van Raalte as a person in his later years. The title of Cohen Stuart\u27s book is: Ses Maanden in Amerika, published by Kruseman and Tjeenk Willink, Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1875, pp. 300-323. Cohen Stuart said that, He is one of those people with whom one cannot associate without becoming richer in spirit and heart, in wisdom and love.https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/vrp_1870s/1181/thumbnail.jp

    Vibrationally induced fourth-order magnetic anisotropy and tunnel splittings in Mn_{12}

    Full text link
    From density-functional-theory (DFT) based methods we calculate the vibrational spectrum of the Mn_{12}O_{12}(COOH)_{16}(H_2 O)_4 molecular magnet. Calculated infrared intensities are in accord with experimental studies. There have been no ab initio attempts at determining which interactions account for the fourth-order anisotropy. We show that vibrationally induced distortions of the molecule contribute to the fourth-order anisotropy Hamiltonian and that the magnitude and sign of the effect (-6.2 K) is in good agreement with all experiments. Vibrationally induced tunnel splittings in isotopically pure and natural samples are predicted.Comment: corres. author: [email protected] 4 pages, final version, accepted PR

    Disability by Design: Representation in TV

    This report focuses on the key findings of a survey conducted in the Spring of 2021 among deaf and disabled people working in the UK’s television industry. Quantitative and qualitative data from 223 respondents reveals a range of systemic barriers and discriminatory behaviours that deaf and disabled people regularly face. Multiple specific examples provide shocking insight into aspects of the lived experience of this under-represented group. The general levels of ignorance reflected in the behaviours and attitudes that our respondents describe suggests that mandatory training is urgently needed, particularly among those with management and recruitment responsibilities. The report highlights the extent to which employers are failing to take seriously their legal obligations under the Equalities Act 2010, and makes a number of practical suggestions for how the UK’s television industry might move beyond well-intentioned mission statements and short-lived ‘initiatives’

    State of Play 2021: Management Practices in UK Unscripted Television

    In many ways, UK television has been a great national success story, making a substantial contribution to GDP while setting the standard, internationally, for high quality content. However this success has been at the expense of those who work in the industry,.... who frequently experience working conditions that would not be tolerated in any other business. Recent decades have seen the gradual casualisation of the workforce and the enervation of the unions, creating an industry that has devolved risk, ultimately, to individual freelancers who have little or no protection for their own livelihoods or wellbeing. The working experience of the television freelancer is characterised by last minute job bookings and last minute cancellations; extended hours without breaks or compensation; discrimination; nepotism; sexual harrassment; and workplace bullying beside the prevailing precarity that makes it almost impossible for them to challenge any of these conditions. Yet it is on this standing army of freelancers that the industry depends. Industry leaders complain of skills shortages – especially in management and leadership roles – which they try to address by recruiting more new entrants. They despair at a lack of diversity behind the camera – which they try to address through assorted short-term schemes and initiatives. They grudgingly acknowledge research that shows poor mental health outcomes in the sector compared with the general population – which they try to address with helplines. What they largely fail to address are the underlying conditions that militate against a healthy work-life balance, drive many experienced professionals to leave the industry prematurely, and effectively guarantee the reproduction of privilege within the ranks of those who survive. Based on a survey of almost twelve hundred television production professionals, this study reveals management and recruitment practices that are not only unethical and damaging to individuals, but damaging to the sustained commercial and creative success of the industry - impacting, as they do, on the mental health, diversity and skills- base of the workforce
