    Oscillating magnetoresistance due to fragile spin structure in metallic GdPd3_3

    Studies on the phenomenon of magnetoresistance (MR) have produced intriguing and application-oriented outcomes for decades--colossal MR, giant MR and recently discovered extremely large MR of millions of percents in semimetals can be taken as examples. We report here the investigation of oscillating MR in a cubic intermetallic compound GdPd3_3, which is the only compound that exhibits MR oscillations between positive and negative values. Our study shows that a very strong correlation between magnetic, electrical and magnetotransport properties is present in this compound. The magnetic structure in GdPd3_3 is highly fragile since applied magnetic fields of moderate strength significantly alter the spin arrangement within the system--a behavior that manifests itself in the oscillating MR. Intriguing magnetotransport characteristics of GdPd3_3 are appealing for field-sensitive device applications, especially if the MR oscillation could materialize at higher temperature by manipulating the magnetic interaction through perturbations caused by chemical substitutions.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures.     Logarithmic Picard groups, chip firing, and the combinatorial rank

    Illusie has suggested that one should think of the classifying group of M_X^{gp}-torsors on a logarithmically smooth curve XX over a standard logarithmic point as a logarithmic analogue of the Picard group of XX. This logarithmic Picard group arises naturally as a quotient of the algebraic Picard group by lifts of the chip firing relations of the associated dual graph. We connect this perspective to Baker and Norine’s theory of ranks of divisors on a finite graph, and to Amini and Baker’s metrized complexes of curves. Moreover, we propose a definition of a combinatorial rank for line bundles on XX and prove that an analogue of the Riemann–Roch formula holds for our combinatorial rank. Our proof proceeds by carefully describing the relationship between the logarithmic Picard group on a logarithmic curve and the Picard group of the associated metrized complex. This approach suggests a natural categorical framework for metrized complexes, namely the category of logarithmic curves

    On the Girth of (3,L) Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes based on Complete Protographs

    We consider the problem of constructing (3,L)(3,L) quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes from complete protographs. A complete protograph is a small bipartite graph with two disjoint vertex sets such that every vertex in the variable-node set is connected to every vertex in the check-node set by a unique edge. This paper analyzes the required lifting factor for achieving girths of six or eight in the resulting quasi-cyclic codes with constraints on lifting.     An Analysis of Farmers’ Perception and Awareness towards Crop Insurance as a Tool for Risk Management in Tamil Nadu

    To insulate farmers against risks in agriculture, government has launched several schemes such as National Agricultural Insurance Scheme and weather index based crop insurance schemes. But their coverage seems to be limited among the farmers primarily due to lack of full information. This paper has reported the results of a survey of 600 farmers conducted to assess their perception about various facets of crop insurance schemes. The Probit and Tobit models have been employed to analyse the factors affecting awareness among the farmers. Crop diversification index has also been used to examine the farmers’ adjustment mechanism against risks. The survey has revealed that most farmers (65%) are aware of risk mitigation measures of the government. But, only half of the farmers have been found aware about the crop insurance schemes/products. This implies that there is need to disseminate information about insurance schemes across the target groups. Further, it has been shown that factors such as gross cropped area, income from other than agricultural sources, presence of risk in farming, number of workers in the farm family, satisfaction with the premium rate and affordability of the insurance premium amount significantly and positively influence the adoption of insurance and premium paid by the farmers.     Exploratory Analysis of Highly Heterogeneous Document Collections

    We present an effective multifaceted system for exploratory analysis of highly heterogeneous document collections. Our system is based on intelligently tagging individual documents in a purely automated fashion and exploiting these tags in a powerful faceted browsing framework. Tagging strategies employed include both unsupervised and supervised approaches based on machine learning and natural language processing. As one of our key tagging strategies, we introduce the KERA algorithm (Keyword Extraction for Reports and Articles). KERA extracts topic-representative terms from individual documents in a purely unsupervised fashion and is revealed to be significantly more effective than state-of-the-art methods.
