Optical Photometry of the GRB 010222 Afterglow
The optical afterglow of GRB 010222 was observed using the recently installed
2-m telescope at the Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle, and the telescopes
at the Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur, beginning ~ 0.6 day after the
detection of the event. The results based on these photometric observations
combined with others reported in the literature are presented in this paper.
The R band light curve shows an initial decline of intensities proportional to
t^{-0.542} which steepens, after 10.3 hours, to t^{-1.263}. Following the model
of collimated outflow, the early break in the light curve implies a very narrow
beam angle (~ 2-3 deg). The two decay rates are consistent with the standard
jet model in a uniform density ambient medium, but require a hard spectrum of
electron power density with p ~ 1.5. The R band light between 14 and 17 hours
since outburst departs from the power law fit by 0.1 mag and shows some
evidence for fluctuations over timescales of an hour in the observer's frame.
Such deviations are expected due to density inhomogeneities if the ambient
medium is similar to the local interstellar medium. GRB 010222 is thus an
example of a highly collimated outflow with a hard spectrum of electron energy

Optical afterglow of the not so dark GRB 021211
We determine Johnson and Cousins photometric CCD magnitudes for
the afterglow of GRB 021211 during the first night after the GRB trigger. The
afterglow was very faint and would have been probably missed if no prompt
observation had been conducted. A fraction of the so-called ``dark'' GRBs may
thus be just ``optically dim'' and require very deep imaging to be detected.
The early-time optical light curve reported by other observers shows prompt
emission with properties similar to that of GRB 990123. Following this, the
afterglow emission from min to days after the burst is
characterized by an overall power-law decay with a slope in the
passband. We derive the value of spectral index in the optical to near-IR
region to be 0.60.2 during 0.13 to 0.8 day after the burst. The flux decay
constant and the spectral slope indicate that optical observations within a day
after the burst lies between cooling frequency and synchrotron maximum

Unravelling the nature of HD 81032 - a new RS CVn Binary
BVR photometric and quasi-simultaneous optical spectroscopic observations of
the star HD 81032 have been carried out during the years 2000 - 2004. A
photometric period of d has been detected for this star. A
large group of spots with a migration period of years is
inferred from the first three years of the data. H and Ca II H and K
emissions from the star indicate high chromospheric activity. The available
photometry in the BVRIJHK bands is consistent with spectral type of K0 IV
previously found for this star. We have also examined the spectral energy
distribution of HD 81032 for the presence of an infrared colour excess using
the 2MASS JHK and IRAS photometry, but found no significant excess in any band
abovethe normal values expected for a star with this spectral type. We have
also analyzed the X-ray emission properties of this star using data obtained by
the ROSAT X-ray observatory during its All-Sky Survey phase. An X-ray flare of
about 12 hours duration was detected during the two days of X-ray coverage
obtained for this star. Its X-ray spectrum, while only containing 345 counts,
is inconsistent with a single-temperature component solar-abundance coronal
plasma model, but implies either the presence of two or more plasma components,
non-solar abundances, or a combination of both of these properties. All of the
above properties of HD 81032 suggest that it is a newly identified, evolved RS

Templeting of Thin Films Induced by Dewetting on Patterned Surfaces
The instability, dynamics and morphological transitions of patterns in thin
liquid films on periodic striped surfaces (consisting of alternating less and
more wettable stripes) are investigated based on 3-D nonlinear simulations that
account for the inter-site hydrodynamic and surface-energetic interactions. The
film breakup is suppressed on some potentially destabilizing nonwettable sites
when their spacing is below a characteristic lengthscale of the instability,
the upper bound for which is close to the spinodal lengthscale. The thin film
pattern replicates the substrate surface energy pattern closely only when, (a)
the periodicity of substrate pattern matches closely with the characteristic
lengthscale, and (b) the stripe-width is within a range bounded by a lower
critical length, below which no heterogeneous rupture occurs, and an upper
transition length above which complex morphological features bearing little

Molecular Exploration of Guava (Psidium guajava L.) Genome Using SSR and RAPD Markers: A Step towards Establishing Linkage Map
In the present study, molecular evaluation of two guava mapping populations (MP), MPI comprising 94 F1 progenies and MPII comprising 46 F1 progenies, was carried out using simple sequence repeat (SSR) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A pseudo-test cross strategy was implemented where 'Kamsari' X 'Purple Local' and 'Purple Local' X 'Allahabad Safeda' were crossed, and, these showed variation in fruit quality traits such as seedstrength (hardness/softness), fruit weight, TSS and pulp color. A set of 30 RAPD markers was used for genotyping MPI while a set of 55 SSR markers was used for genotyping MPII. In case of MPI, 30 RAPD markers generated 214 scorable markers, of which 80 markers were specific to 'Kamsari', 14 markers to 'Purple Local' and the remaining 120 were intercross markers. As for MPII, 55 polymorphic SSR markers resulted in generation of 207 alleles (with a maximum of 4 alleles and a minimum of 3 alleles per locus), of which 108 alleles were specific to 'Purple Local' while 99 were specific to 'Allahabad Safeda'. Genotypic data thus generated can be further exploited for constructing genetic linkage maps and mapping complex QTLs governing fruit quality traits in guava.
The relation of steady evaporating drops fed by an influx and freely evaporating drops
We discuss a thin film evolution equation for a wetting evaporating liquid on
a smooth solid substrate. The model is valid for slowly evaporating small
sessile droplets when thermal effects are insignificant, while wettability and
capillarity play a major role. The model is first employed to study steady
evaporating drops that are fed locally through the substrate. An asymptotic
analysis focuses on the precursor film and the transition region towards the
bulk drop and a numerical continuation of steady drops determines their fully
non-linear profiles.
Following this, we study the time evolution of freely evaporating drops
without influx for several initial drop shapes. As a result we find that drops
initially spread if their initial contact angle is larger than the apparent
contact angle of large steady evaporating drops with influx. Otherwise they
recede right from the beginning
Genetic Diversity Analysis and Barcoding in Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) Cultivars Using RAPD and ISSR Markers
Tuberose is one of the most important bulbous ornamentals grown commercially for loose as well as cut flowers. RAPD and ISSR markers used in the study revealed 53% and 73% polymorphism, respectively, among ten tuberose varieties. Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) and Resolving Power (RP) for RAPD varied from 0.35 - 0.46 and 0.8 - 3.6, respectively, and that for ISSR was 0.36 - 0.49 and 0.91 - 4.55, respectively. The dendrogram (UPGMA), based on Jaccards co-efficient as similarity index for RAPD and ISSR, grouped ten varieties into two major clusters, and, combined RAPD-ISSR cluster analysis formed three major clusters based on their genetic relatedness/variation. PCA revealed that the spatial arrangement of these 10 cultivars was congruent with dendrogram analysis. Mantel's test indicated very good correlation, with r = 0.86 for combination of ISSR and RAPD-ISSR. To facilitate identification of tuberose cultivars, a cultivar identification diagram (CID) was developed in which seven ISSR loci could differentiate all the ten cultivars used in the study. Barcodes were developed for five cultivars released by IIHR using 57 polymorphic loci generated by 11 ISSR primers. The size of these loci ranged from 252bp to 2.2kb. These barcodes can be used as a standard reference source for quick identification of cultivars
Enhanced field emission properties of Au/SnSe nano-heterostructure: a combined experimental and theoretical investigation
We report the field emission properties of two-dimensional SnSe nanosheets (NSs) and Au/SnSe nano-heterostructure (NHS) prepared by a simple and economical route of one-pot colloidal and sputtering technique. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) analysis reveal surface protrusions and morphology modification of the SnSe NSs by Au deposition. By decorating the SnSe NSs with Au nanoparticles, significant improvement in field emission characteristics were observed. A significant reduction in the turn-on field from 2.25 V/µm for the SnSe NSs to 1.25 V/µm for the Au/SnSe NHS was observed. Emission current density of 300 µA/cm2 has been achieved at an applied field of 4.00 and 1.91 V/µm for SnSe NSs and Au/SnSe NHS, respectively. Analysis of the emission current as a function of time also demonstrated the robustness of the present Au/SnSe NHS. Consistent with the experimental data, our complementary first-principles DFT calculations predict lower work function for the Au/SnSe NHS compared to the SnSe NSs as the primary origin for improved field emission. The present study has evidently provided a rational heterostructure strategy for improving various field emission related applications via surface and electronic modifications of the nanostructures
Enrichment of Genetic Linkage Maps and Mapping QTLs Specific to Seed Strength-Hardness/Softness-In Guava (Psidium guajava L.)
The present research focuses mainly on molecular mining and morphological evaluation of guava genome within a full-sib population and, thereby, mapping of quantitative trait loci related to fruit quality traits, viz., seed strength (hardness/softness) and average fruit weight. Linkage maps were enriched for both parental lines, 'Kamsari' and 'Purple Local' using a set of 60 RAPD markers following the pseudo-testcross strategy on a panel of 94 progeny. A total of 480 scorable markers were identified, of which 131 were specific to 'kamsari' and 28 to 'Purple Local', segregating as test cross markers, and, 321 showing intercross pattern common to both. 'Kamsari' spanned a total length of 1959.1cM with average marker interval distance of 3.93cM, while 'Purple Local' spanned a length of 1537.9cM with average marker interval distance of 3.29cM, by forming 11 linkage groups. Estimated genome length observed was 93.02% and 92.77% in 'Kamsari' and 'Purple Local', respectively. Composite Interval Mapping (CIM) was computed at significance of 0.05 and LOD threshold greater than 3.0, which led to detection of one major QTL for the trait of average fruit weight, and, four QTLs for the trait of seed strength (hardness/softness). Of these, two were major and two minor QTLs. Our study provides molecular mapping information on marker-assisted selection for improvement of guava in a breeding program
Chandipura virus: a major cause of acute encephalitis in children in North Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, India
A hospital-based surveillance was undertaken between May 2005 and April 2006 to elucidate the contribution of Chandipura virus (CHPV) to acute viral encephalitis cases in children, seroconversion in recovered cases and to compare the seroprevalences of anti-CHPV IgM and N antibodies in areas reporting cases with those without any case of acute viral encephalitis. During this period, 90 cases of acute encephalitis were hospitalized in the pediatric wards of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital, Warangal. There were 49 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, i.e., CFR of 54.4%). Clinical samples and records were obtained from 52 suspected cases. The cases were below 15 years, majority in 0-4 years (35/52, 67.3%). Computerized tomography (CT) scans and cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) picture favored viral etiology. No neurological sequelae were observed. CHPV etiology was detected in 25 cases (48.1%, n = 52; RNA in 20, IgM in 3 and N antibody seroconversion in 2). JEV etiology was detected in 5 cases (IgM in 4 cases and seroconversion in 1 case). Anti-CHPV IgM seroprevalence in contacts (26/167, 15.6%) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in non-contacts (11/430, 2.6%); which was also observed in children < 15 years (19/90, 21.1% vs. 3/109, 2.7%). Anti-CHPV N antibody seroprevalence in <15 years contacts (66/90, 73.3%) and non-contacts (77/109, 70.6%) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than in contacts (75/77, 97.4%) and non-contacts (302/321, 94.1%) more than 15 years respectively. CHPV appears to be the major cause of acute viral encephalitis in children in endemic areas during early monsoon months
