Purpose: More than half of the cavity restorations are replaced due to bacterial microleakage. A need for disinfection agents arises. Application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) may be beneficial, yet their impact on the adhesives’ shear bond strength to dentin remains unknown. Methods: The aim was to assess the shear bond strength to dentin of different dental materials combined with AgNPs. Failure modes were also examined using SEM/FIB, SEM/EDS and endodontic microscopes. Results: The results showed no impact of AgNPs addition to dental materials in terms of shear bond strength to dentin. A change of the failure mode of the self-etch bonding system, Clearfil SE Bond, combined with AgNPs was observed. The new failure modes depended upon the order of application of the materials onto dentin. Conclusions: The microscopic evaluation of the samples showed the presence of AgNPs agglomerations gathered on the dentin’s surface. AgNPs connection with self-etching dentin bonding system may have a serious clinical impact

Uwalnianie biologicznie szkodliwych związków chemicznych z dostępnych na rynkach Europy i USA ortodontycznych systemów adhezyjnych — badania in vitro

The study assessed the chemical stability of ConTec LC, Resilence, Light Bond and Transbond XT orthodontic adhesive resins. The subject of the analysis was the release of HEMA (2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate), EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), UDMA (urethane dimethacrylate) and BPA (bisphenol A) monomers from test sample materials in successive time intervals, using HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography). The study confirmed the presence of methacrylate monomers and bisphenol A in eluates of the assessed materials regardless of the observation period. The results show that orthodontic adhesive systems polymerized with visible light are chemically unstable, releasing biologically harmful ingredients to the external environment for a long time. Dental materials containing polymer network based on methacrylates require structure modification or elimination of harmful components in order to increase safety of their application.Oceniano stabilność chemiczną ortodontycznych żywic adhezyjnych ConTec LC, Resilence, Light Bond oraz Transbond XT. Metodą wysokociśnieniowej chromatografii cieczowej (HPLC) analizowano uwalnianie z próbek badanych materiałów monomerów: HEMA (metakrylan 2-hydroksyetylu), TEGDMA (dimetakrylan triglikolu etylenowego), EGDMA (dimetakrylan glikolu etylenowego), UDMA (dimetakrylan uretanu) i BPA (bisfenol A) w kolejnych przedziałach czasowych.

Could lower leg Wartenberg test be used as a predictor of restrictions in temporomandibular joint movements in CP patients

Purpose: Patients with spasticity suffer not only from neurological problems but also from various dentistry problems due to spasticity of the jaw muscles. Measurements of motion in temporomandibular joints should reflect the amount of abnormal muscle tone of these muscles. The aim of this study was to find out if the measurements of temporomandibular joint movements performed with the ultrasound Zebris device are different in cerebral palsy patients than in healthy subjects; and to find out if the information on the degree of spasticity in the lower legs provided by the Wartenberg test could be used to predict the degree of spasticty in the jaw muscles. Method: Twenty five healthy subjects and 25 cerebral palsy patients participated in the study. Two types of measurements were performed: temporomandibular movements measured with Zebris device, and instrumented Wartenberg test. Results: The laterotrusion and opening movements are different in CP patients than in healthy subjects. Laterotrusion movement correlates with velocity measured during the Wartenberg test. Conclusion: This finding suggests that high spasticity in the lower legs could indicate jaw movement restrictions in CP patients

Aortic Conduit Aneurysm and Enteric Fistula Formation in a Post Liver Transplant Patient: A potential causative role for CMV?

    No full text
Hepatic arterial aortic conduits can be used as an alternative means of revascularising the donor liver when the native recipient hepatic artery (HA) cannot be used. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common Herpesviridae infection in patients who have undergone solid organ transplants. It can be asymptomatic but may cause fever and invasive disease affecting any organ system. Here we describe the first case in the literature of an aortic conduit aneurysm and concurrent CMV viremia following liver transplantation. We speculate on a causative role for CMV in the development of the aneurysm. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
