Droplet shapes on structured substrates and conformal invariance

We consider the finite-size scaling of equilibrium droplet shapes for fluid adsorption (at bulk two-phase co-existence) on heterogeneous substrates and also in wedge geometries in which only a finite domain ΛA\Lambda_{A} of the substrate is completely wet. For three-dimensional systems with short-ranged forces we use renormalization group ideas to establish that both the shape of the droplet height and the height-height correlations can be understood from the conformal invariance of an appropriate operator. This allows us to predict the explicit scaling form of the droplet height for a number of different domain shapes. For systems with long-ranged forces, conformal invariance is not obeyed but the droplet shape is still shown to exhibit strong scaling behaviour. We argue that droplet formation in heterogeneous wedge geometries also shows a number of different scaling regimes depending on the range of the forces. The conformal invariance of the wedge droplet shape for short-ranged forces is shown explicitly.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures. (Submitted to J.Phys.:Cond.Mat.

Development of screening tests for aneuploidy induction by environmental pollutants.

When legally required mutagenicity testing of chemicals is undertaken, the important genetic end point of aneuploidy is not included because validated test methods are lacking. Therefore, the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) has funded a research program to develop and validate tests for aneuploidy induction. Ten chemicals, selected on the basis of their ability to interact with cell organelles relevant for aneuploidy induction, were tested in 11 laboratories. The assays ranged from in vitro tubulin assembly studies to in vivo germ-cell tests. The results allow several conclusions: a) Fungal aneuploidy tests are not capable of detecting inhibitors of mammalian tubulin polymerization such as colchicine and vinblastine. Therefore, they will not play a role in screening for aneuploidy but are of value for studying the relationship between induced aneuploidy and recombination. b) Chemicals that induce aneuploidy in mammalian germ cells are readily detected in the in vitro mammalian cell systems. Some chemicals such as thiabendazole and thimerosal induce aneuploidy in vitro but do not appear to be very effective in vivo. c) Cell division aberrations induced in mammalian cells in vitro seem to be predictive for aneuploidy induction in the same cell type. Likewise, c-mitotic effects and cell cycle delay in vivo in mitotic and meiotic cells correlate with aneuploidy induction in the respective tissue. A second CEC Aneuploidy Program has started recently to refine the most promising test protocols, to provide understanding of variety of mechanisms by which chemicals induce aneuploidy, and to establish a data base for aneugens among environmental pollutants

The ethical role of computational linguistics in digital psychological formulation and suicide prevention.

Formulation is central to clinical practice. Formulation has a factor weighing, pattern recognition and explanatory hypothesis modelling focus. Formulation attempts to make sense of why a person presents in a certain state at a certain time and context, and how that state may be best managed to enhance mental health, safety and optimal change. Inherent to the clinical need for formulation is an appreciation of the complexities, uncertainty and limits of applying theoretical concepts and symptom, diagnostic and risk categories to human experience; or attaching meaning or weight to any particular factor in an individual's history or mental state without considering the broader biopsychosocial and cultural context. With specific reference to suicide prevention, this paper considers the need and potential for the computer linguistic community to be both cognisant of and ethically contribute to the clinical formulation process
