Nested entangled states for distributed quantum channels
We find a coupling-strength configuration for a linear chain of N spins which
gives rise to simultaneous multiple Bell states. We suggest a way such an
interesting entanglement pattern can be used in order to distribute maximally
entangled channels to remote locations and generate multipartite entanglement
with a minimum-control approach. Our proposal thus provides a way to achieve
the core resources in distributed information processing. The schemes we
describe can be efficiently tested in chains of coupled cavities interacting
with three-level atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, RevTeX
Knudsen Effect in a Nonequilibrium Gas
From the molecular dynamics simulation of a system of hard-core disks in
which an equilibrium cell is connected with a nonequilibrium cell, it is
confirmed that the pressure difference between two cells depends on the
direction of the heat flux. From the boundary layer analysis, the velocity
distribution function in the boundary layer is obtained. The agreement between
the theoretical result and the numerical result is fairly good.Comment: 4pages, 4figure
Extraction of Singlet States from Noninteracting High-Dimensional Spins
We present a scheme for the extraction of singlet states of two remote
particles of arbitrary quantum spin number. The goal is achieved through
post-selection of the state of interaction mediators sent in succession. A
small number of iterations is sufficient to make the scheme effective. We
propose two suitable experimental setups where the protocol can be implemented.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Deep ROSAT-HRI observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1399
We present the preliminary results of a deep (167 ks) ROSAT HRI observation
of the cD galaxy NGC1399 in the Fornax cluster. We find, in agreement with
previous observations, an extended (41 Kpc adopting a distance of 19 Mpc)
gaseous halo with a luminosity of L_X=(4.41\pm 0.04)x10^{41} erg/s. The 5
arcsec resolution of the data allows us to detect a very complex and asymmetric
structure of the halo with respect to the optical galaxy. Moreover the analysis
of the radial structure reveals the presence of a multi-component profile not
consistent with a simple King model over the whole 40 Kpc. We do not detect the
presence of a central source and pose an upper limit to the luminosity of a
possible active nucleus. Due to the length of the observation, comparable to
that of a deep survey, we detect a large number of sources within the HRI FOV,
in slight excess with respect to the estimates based on previous surveys. We
study the flux distribution of the sources, their temporal behaviour and their
spatial distribution with respect to the central galaxy.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures (6 in color), 1 table; uses subfigure.sty,

Proton magnetic resonance imaging with a nitrogen-vacancy spin sensor
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging with nanometer resolution requires
new detection techniques with sensitivity well beyond the capability of
conventional inductive detection. Here, we demonstrate two dimensional imaging
of H NMR from an organic test sample using a single nitrogen-vacancy center
in diamond as the sensor. The NV center detects the oscillating magnetic field
from precessing protons in the sample as the sample is scanned past the NV
center. A spatial resolution of 12 nm is shown, limited primarily by the scan
accuracy. With further development, NV-detected magnetic resonance imaging
could lead to a new tool for three-dimensional imaging of complex
nanostructures, including biomolecules.Comment: Main text: 19 pages including 5 figures Supplementary Information: 9

Teleportation capability, distillability, and nonlocality on three-qubit states
In this paper, we consider teleportation capability, distillability, and
nonlocality on three-qubit states. In order to investigate some relations among
them, we first find the explicit formulas of the quantities about the maximal
teleportation fidelity on three-qubit states. We show that if any three-qubit
state is useful for three-qubit teleportation then the three-qubit state is
distillable into a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, and that if any
three-qubit state violates a specific form of Mermin inequality then the
three-qubit state is useful for three-qubit teleportation.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; The old version has been generalized into the
results on general 3-qubit state
Dynamical Friction of a Circular-Orbit Perturber in a Gaseous Medium
We investigate the gravitational wake due to, and dynamical friction on, a
perturber moving on a circular orbit in a uniform gaseous medium using a
semi-analytic method. This work is a straightforward extension of Ostriker
(1999) who studied the case of a straight-line trajectory. The circular orbit
causes the bending of the wake in the background medium along the orbit,
forming a long trailing tail. The wake distribution is thus asymmetric, giving
rise to the drag forces in both opposite (azimuthal) and lateral (radial)
directions to the motion of the perturber, although the latter does not
contribute to orbital decay much. For subsonic motion, the density wake with a
weak tail is simply a curved version of that in Ostriker and does not exhibit
the front-back symmetry. The resulting drag force in the opposite direction is
remarkably similar to the finite-time, linear-trajectory counterpart. On the
other hand, a supersonic perturber is able to overtake its own wake, possibly
multiple times, and develops a very pronounced tail. The supersonic tail
surrounds the perturber in a trailing spiral fashion, enhancing the perturbed
density at the back as well as far front of the perturber. We provide the
fitting formulae for the drag forces as functions of the Mach number, whose
azimuthal part is surprisingly in good agreement with the Ostriker's formula,
provided Vp t=2 Rp, where Vp and Rp are the velocity and orbital radius of the
perturber, respectively.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical
