Theory of adiabatic Hexaamminecobalt-Self-Exchange
We have reexamined the thermally induced Co(NH_3)_6^{2+/3+} [Co(II/III)]
redox reaction using the first principles density-functional-theory method,
semiclassical Marcus theory, and known charge transfer parameters. We confirm a
previously suggested mechanism involving excited state (^2E_g) of Co(II) which
becomes lower than the ground state (^4T_1g) in the transition state region.
This lowers the transition state barrier considerably by about 6.9 kcal/mol and
leads to a spin-allowed and adiabatic electron exchange process. Our
calculations are consistent with previous experimental results regarding the
spin-excitation energy (^3T_1g) of Co(III), and the fact that an optical
absorption peak (^2E_g) of the Co(II) species could not be found
experimentally. Our rate is of order 6 10^{-3} 1/Ms and hence 2 orders of
magnitude faster than determined previously by experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables; submitted to J.Chem.Phy
Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials
We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a magnetic
and a quadrupolar ground doublet, and a excited triplet. Using
the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi
liquid state below a temperature varying as the triplet-doublet
splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear
magnetic susceptibility and the contribution to the linear
susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These
results may explain UBe as mixed valent with a small crossover scale

Staggered Superconductivity in UPt: A New Phenomenological Approach
We present a new Ginzburg-Landau theory for superconductivity in UPt,
based upon a multicomponent order parameter transforming under an irreducible
space group representation; the phase is staggered in real space. Our model can
explain the phase diagram including the tetracritical point for all
field directions. We motivate this unconventional superconducting state in
terms of odd-in-time-reversal pairing that may arise in one- or two-channel
Kondo models, and suggest experimental tests.Comment: 12 pages, 3 postscript figures are appended as a uuencoded file,

Nonparametric measures of the impact of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture
Nonparametric methods are used to measure the impact of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture over the 1953–94 period. Results using both unrestricted and 30‐year lagged specifications of the research impacts on productivity suggest that while certain aspects of the nonparametric multi‐input/output technologies are quite robust to alternative specifications (in particular, the associated Malmquist total factor productivity indexes), other aspects are less stable (in particular, the indexes on input and, to a lesser extent, output biased technical change). Internal rates of return to research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture are estimated to be in the 12 per cent to 20 per cent range.Crop Production/Industries, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
Cosmic X-ray physics
The soft X-ray sky survey data are combined with the results from the UXT sounding rocket payload. Very strong constraints can then be placed on models of the origin of the soft diffuse background. Additional observational constraints force more complicated and realistic models. Significant progress was made in the extraction of more detailed spectral information from the UXT data set. Work was begun on a second generation proportional counter response model. The first flight of the sounding rocket will have a collimator to study the diffuse background
