    An Exploration Of Parameters Affecting Employee Energy Conversation Behaviour At The Workplace, Towards IOT-Enabled Behavioural Interventions

    Energy conservation is one of the widely recognised important means towards addressing CO2 emissions and the resulting global issue of climate change. Furthermore, public buildings have been recognised as contributing significantly to the consumption of energy worldwide. More importantly, occupant behaviour, a factor that needs to be studied further, can have a high impact on the energy consumed within public buildings. Through our study, we have conducted an exploratory study on the parameters affecting employee energy conservation behaviour in public buildings, towards constructing a behavioural model that can be employed in IoT-enabled personalised energy disaggregation initiatives. We propose an extension to an existing model of employee energy behaviour based on Values Beliefs Norms (VBN) theory, with the addition of five parameters – comfort levels, burnout, locus of control, personal disadvantages and energy awareness. In addition, we discriminate between two groups of inter-related energy conservation behaviours at work – popular and unpopular energy conservation behaviours – and explain our resulting behavioural models’ utility towards IoT-enabled energy conservation, within workplaces. We find that promoting employees’ energy awareness levels, as well as positively affecting their environmental worldviews and personal norms are important factors that should be considered in behavioural interventions toward energy conservation at the workplace

    Constructing design concepts : a computational approach to the synthesis of architectural form

A design concept is the manifestation of the basic instability of our mental performance: it is a makeshift that provides general direction for exploration. In synthesis architects explore concepts by inventing transitions that conclude to the description of artifacts. This study suggests that the process of synthesis, which is an act of human imagination, can be approached by the means of a calculus, as calculation. Taking into account the nature of design concepts and practices, as well as the developments in the field of shape computation, the study explains why and how computational methods can be applied in the process of synthesis of architectural form. This process can be equated to a non-linear sequence of computations with points, lines, planes, and solids, on the plane and in physical space. This study examines the functional and perceptual properties of points, lines and planes. How do basic elements behave in formal composition, and how do computations of form affect basic elements? The context of the study is composite. Shape computation theory that involves algebras of basic elements and shape rules provides a flexible and expressive computational apparatus, while the systematic approach of the Bauhaus on nonrepresentational composition, and the theories of P.     Ergodic Capacity for the SIMO Nakagami- Channel

    This paper presents closed-form expressions for the ergodic channel capacity of SIMO (single-input and multiple output) wireless systems operating in a Nakagami- fading channel. As the performance of SIMO channel is closely related to the diversity combining techniques, we present closed-form expressions for the capacity of maximal ratio combining (MRC), equal gain combining (EGC), selection combining (SC), and switch and stay (SSC) diversity systems operating in Nakagami- fading channels. Also, the ergodic capacity of a SIMO system in a Nakagami- fading channel without any diversity technique is derived. The latter scenario is further investigated for a large amount of receive antennas. Finally, numerical results are presented for illustration

    Attitudes towards risk-reducing early salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy for ovarian cancer prevention:a cohort study

    Objective: To determine risk-reducing early salpingectomy and delayed oophorectomy (RRESDO) acceptability and effect of surgical prevention on menopausal sequelae/satisfaction/regret in women at increased ovarian cancer (OC) risk. Design: Multicentre, cohort, questionnaire study (IRSCTN:12310993). Setting: United Kingdom (UK). Population: UK women without OC ≥18 years, at increased OC risk, with/without previous RRSO, ascertained through specialist familial cancer/genetic clinics and BRCA support groups. Methods: Participants completed a 39-item questionnaire. Baseline characteristics were described using descriptive statistics. Logistic/linear regression models analysed the impact of variables on RRESDO acceptability and health outcomes. Main outcomes: RRESDO acceptability, menopausal sequelae, satisfaction/regret. Results: In all, 346 of 683 participants underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). Of premenopausal women who had not undergone RRSO, 69.1% (181/262) found it acceptable to participate in a research study offering RRESDO. Premenopausal women concerned about sexual dysfunction were more likely to find RRESDO acceptable (odds ratio [OR] = 2.9, 95% CI 1.2–7.7, P = 0.025). Women experiencing sexual dysfunction after premenopausal RRSO were more likely to find RRESDO acceptable in retrospect (OR = 5.3, 95% CI 1.2–27.5, P < 0.031). In all, 88.8% (143/161) premenopausal and 95.2% (80/84) postmenopausal women who underwent RRSO, respectively, were satisfied with their decision, whereas 9.4% (15/160) premenopausal and 1.2% (1/81) postmenopausal women who underwent RRSO regretted their decision. HRT uptake in premenopausal individuals without breast cancer (BC) was 74.1% (80/108). HRT use did not significantly affect satisfaction/regret levels but did reduce symptoms of vaginal dryness (OR = 0.4, 95% CI 0.2–0.9, P = 0.025). Conclusion: Data show high RRESDO acceptability, particularly in women concerned about sexual dysfunction. Although RRSO satisfaction remains high, regret rates are much higher for premenopausal women than for postmenopausal women. HRT use following premenopausal RRSO does not increase satisfaction but does reduce vaginal dryness.     Implication of human papillomavirus-66 in vulvar carcinoma: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Vulvar cancer in older women is seldom associated with human papillomavirus infection.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the case of an 80-year-old Greek Caucasian woman with an undetermined obstetric and gynecologic history. The patient underwent radical vulvectomy and bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy for a vulvar carcinoma. A human papillomavirus infection was suggested on the basis of histological and cytological examinations followed by human papillomavirus DNA typing, which revealed the presence of human papillomavirus-66.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Even though human papillomavirus-16 and human papillomavirus-18 are most frequently implicated in the pathogenesis of vulvar carcinoma, human papillomavirus-66 can also be regarded as a causative factor. Suspicious lesions should be biopsied, and in the presence of carcinoma, vulvectomy with bilateral lymphadenectomy, if necessary, must be performed. Furthermore, polymerase chain reaction assay analysis with clinical arrays in cytological samples is an accurate test for the detection of a wide range of human papillomavirus genotypes and can be used to verify the infection and specify the human papillomavirus type implicated.</p

    Prevalence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in unselected breast cancer patients from Greece

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Inheritance of a mutation in either <it>BRCA1 </it>or <it>BRCA2 </it>accounts for approximately 5% of all breast cancer cases, but varies by country. Investigations into the contribution of <it>BRCA </it>mutations to breast cancer incidence in Greece have been, for the most part, limited by small sample sizes and by the use of cases selected for their family history of cancer. The aim of the current study was to estimate <it>BRCA </it>mutation frequencies in breast cancer patients unselected for family history.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To do so, we enrolled 127 unselected women with breast cancer from the Alexandra Hospital in Athens, Greece, a large public hospital in the city. Mutations in <it>BRCA1 </it>and <it>BRCA2 </it>were detected using a combination of techniques and were confirmed by direct sequencing. Two large genomic deletions were sought using mutation-specific assays. A detailed family history of cancer was obtained from each patient.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We were able to successfully complete testing on samples from 127 women. Among these, six mutations were identified (four in <it>BRCA1 </it>and two in <it>BRCA2</it>) representing 4.7% of the total or 9.5% of cases diagnosed before age forty. None of the mutation carriers had a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Three of the four <it>BRCA1 </it>mutations were in exon 20: two were a G5331A mutation and the third was a 3.2 kb deletion. The fourth <it>BRCA1 </it>mutation was the 3819delGTAAA in exon 11. The two <it>BRCA2 </it>mutations were in exon 11 (3782del10 and 4512insT).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The G5331A mutation in <it>BRCA1 </it>appears to be a founder mutation in the Greek population.</p

    Cancer risks among BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers
