Quantifying and explaining parameter heterogeneity in the capital regulation-bank risk nexus
By examining the impact of capital regulation on bank risk-taking using a local estimation technique, we are able to quantify the heterogeneous response of banks towards this type of regulation in banking sectors of western-type economies. Subsequently, using this information on the bank-level responses to capital regulation, we examine the sources of heterogeneity. The findings suggest that the impact of capital regulation on bank risk is very heterogeneous across banks and the sources of this heterogeneity can be traced into both bank and industry characteristics, as well as into the macroeconomic conditions. Therefore, the present analysis has important implications on the way bank regulation is conducted, as it suggests that common capital regulatory umbrellas may not be sufficient to promote financial stability. On the basis of our findings, we contend that Basel guidelines may have to be reoriented towards more flexible, country-specific policy proposals that focus on the restraint of excess risk-taking by banks.Capital regulation; risk-taking of banks; local generalized method of moments
Correlations in Quantum Spin Ladders with Site and Bond Dilution
We investigate the effects of quenched disorder, in the form of site and bond
dilution, on the physics of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on
even-leg ladders. Site dilution is found to prune rung singlets and thus create
localized moments which interact via a random, unfrustrated network of
effective couplings, realizing a random-exchange Heisenberg model (REHM) in one
spatial dimension. This system exhibits a power-law diverging correlation
length as the temperature decreases. Contrary to previous claims, we observe
that the scaling exponent is non-universal, i.e., doping dependent. This
finding can be explained by the discrete nature of the values taken by the
effective exchange couplings in the doped ladder. Bond dilution on even-leg
ladders leads to a more complex evolution with doping of correlations, which
are weakly enhanced in 2-leg ladders, and are even suppressed for low dilution
in the case of 4-leg and 6-leg ladders. We clarify the different aspects of
correlation enhancement and suppression due to bond dilution by isolating the
contributions of rung-bond dilution and leg-bond dilution.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figure
Spontaneous radiative decay of translational levels of an atom near a dielectric surface
We study spontaneous radiative decay of translational levels of an atom in
the vicinity of a semi-infinite dielectric. We systematically derive the
microscopic dynamical equations for the spontaneous decay process. We calculate
analytically and numerically the radiative linewidths and the spontaneous
transition rates for the translational levels. The roles of the interference
between the emitted and reflected fields and of the transmission into the
evanescent modes are clearly identified. Our numerical calculations for the
silica--cesium interaction show that the radiative linewidths of the bound
excited levels with large enough but not too large vibrational quantum numbers
are moderately enhanced by the emission into the evanescent modes and those for
the deep bound levels are substantially reduced by the surface-induced red
shift of the transition frequency
Determining the Number of Parallel RC Branches in Polarization / Depolarization Current Modeling for XLPE Cable Insulation
An important element in the electric power distribution system is the underground cable. However continuous applications of high voltages unto the cable, may lead to insulation degradations and subsequent cable failure. Since any disruption to the electricity supply may lead to economic losses as well as lowering customer satisfaction, the maintenance of cables is very important to an electrical utility company. Thus, a reliable diagnostic technique that is able to accurately assess the condition of cable insulation operating is critical, in order for cable replacement exercise to be done. One such diagnostic technique to assess the level of degradation within the cable insulation is the Polarization / Depolarization Current (PDC) analysis. This research work attempts to investigate PDC behaviour for medium voltage (MV) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated cables, via baseline PDC measurements and utilizing the measured data to simulate for PDC analysis. Once PDC simulations have been achieved, the values of conductivity of XLPE cable insulations can be approximated. Cable conductivity serves as an indicator to the level of degradation within XLPE cable insulation. It was found that for new and unused XLPE cables, the polarization and depolarization currents have almost overlapping trendlines, as the cable insulationâs conduction current is negligible. Using a linear dielectric circuit equivalence model as the XLPE cable insulation and its corresponding governing equations, it is possible to optimize the number of parallel RC branches to simulate PDC analysis, with a very high degree of accuracy. The PDC simulation model has been validated against the baseline PDC measurements
SciRecSys: A Recommendation System for Scientific Publication by Discovering Keyword Relationships
In this work, we propose a new approach for discovering various relationships
among keywords over the scientific publications based on a Markov Chain model.
It is an important problem since keywords are the basic elements for
representing abstract objects such as documents, user profiles, topics and many
things else. Our model is very effective since it combines four important
factors in scientific publications: content, publicity, impact and randomness.
Particularly, a recommendation system (called SciRecSys) has been presented to
support users to efficiently find out relevant articles
Effect of an atom on a quantum guided field in a weakly driven fiber-Bragg-grating cavity
We study the interaction of an atom with a quantum guided field in a weakly
driven fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG) cavity. We present an effective Hamiltonian
and derive the density-matrix equations for the combined atom-cavity system. We
calculate the mean photon number, the second-order photon correlation function,
and the atomic excited-state population. We show that, due to the confinement
of the guided cavity field in the fiber cross-section plane and in the space
between the FBG mirrors, the presence of the atom in the FBG cavity can
significantly affect the mean photon number and the photon statistics even
though the cavity finesse is moderate, the cavity is long, and the probe field
is weak.Comment: Accepted for Phys. Rev.
Wage Differentials among Ownership Groups and Worker Quality in Vietnamese Manufacturing
This paper examines wage differentials among medium-large (20 or more employees) whollyforeign multinational enterprises (WFs), joint-venture multinationals (JVs), state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and domestic private firms in Vietnamese manufacturing. The analysis focuses on 2009 because it is possible to examine wage differentials after accounting for the influences of two measures of worker quality, educational background and occupation. Simple comparisons in large samples of 11 industries combined indicate that averages wages in JVs were about 92 percent higher than in private firms in 2009, SOEs and WFs paid 57 and 54 percent more than private firms, respectively. Corresponding, conditional differentials that control for the influences of worker education and occupation, as well as capital intensity, size, and shares of female workers, were substantially smaller, but positive and significant in largesamples. Wage levels and differentials varied substantially among industries. Conditional differentials remained positive and significant for WFs and JFs in most of the 11 industries examined, but estimates of SOE-private differentials were insignificant in most industries. Robustness checks using 2007 data could not account for worker occupation, but revealed results similar to those for 2009
Atom trapping and guiding with a subwavelength-diameter optical fiber
We suggest using an evanescent wave around a thin fiber to trap atoms. We
show that the gradient force of a red-detuned evanescent-wave field in the
fundamental mode of a silica fiber can balance the centrifugal force when the
fiber diameter is about two times smaller than the wavelength of the light and
the component of the angular momentum of the atoms along the fiber axis is in
an appropriate range. As an example, the system should be realizable for Cesium
atoms at a temperature of less than 0.29 mK using a silica fiber with a radius
of 0.2 m and a 1.3-m-wavelength light with a power of about 27 mW.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
A Simple Linear Time Algorithm for Computing a 1-Median on Cactus Graphs
We address the problem of finding a 1-median on a cactus graph. The problem has already been solved in linear time by the algorithms of Burkard and Krarup (1998), and Lan and Wang (2000). These algorithms are complicated and need efforts. Hence, we develop in this paper a simpler algorithm. First, we construct a condition for a cycle that contains a 1-median or for a vertex that is indeed a 1-median of the cactus. Based on this condition, we localize the search for deriving a 1-median on the underlying cactus. Complexity analysis shows that the approach runs in linear time
Multiorder coherent Raman scattering of a quantum probe field
We study the multiorder coherent Raman scattering of a quantum probe field in
a far-off-resonance medium with a prepared coherence. Under the conditions of
negligible dispersion and limited bandwidth, we derive a Bessel-function
solution for the sideband field operators. We analytically and numerically
calculate various quantum statistical characteristics of the sideband fields.
We show that the multiorder coherent Raman process can replicate the
statistical properties of a single-mode quantum probe field into a broad comb
of generated Raman sidebands. We also study the mixing and modulation of photon
statistical properties in the case of two-mode input. We show that the prepared
Raman coherence and the medium length can be used as control parameters to
switch a sideband field from one type of photon statistics to another type, or
from a non-squeezed state to a squeezed state and vice versa.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
