    Preliminary Results from Recent Measurements of the Antiprotonic Helium Hyperfine Structure

    We report on preliminary results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium. This precise measurement which was commenced in 2006, has now been completed. Our initial analysis shows no apparent density or power dependence and therefore the results can be averaged. The statistical error of the observable M1 transitions is a factor of 60 smaller than that of three body quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations, while their difference has been resolved to a precision comparable to theory (a factor of 10 better than our first measurement). This difference is sensitive to the antiproton magnetic moment and agreement between theory and experiment would lead to an increased precision of this parameter, thus providing a test of CPT invariance.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    OpenCL + OpenSHMEM Hybrid Programming Model for the Adapteva Epiphany Architecture

    There is interest in exploring hybrid OpenSHMEM + X programming models to extend the applicability of the OpenSHMEM interface to more hardware architectures. We present a hybrid OpenCL + OpenSHMEM programming model for device-level programming for architectures like the Adapteva Epiphany many-core RISC array processor. The Epiphany architecture comprises a 2D array of low-power RISC cores with minimal uncore functionality connected by a 2D mesh Network-on-Chip (NoC). The Epiphany architecture offers high computational energy efficiency for integer and floating point calculations as well as parallel scalability. The Epiphany-III is available as a coprocessor in platforms that also utilize an ARM CPU host. OpenCL provides good functionality for supporting a co-design programming model in which the host CPU offloads parallel work to a coprocessor. However, the OpenCL memory model is inconsistent with the Epiphany memory architecture and lacks support for inter-core communication. We propose a hybrid programming model in which OpenSHMEM provides a better solution by replacing the non-standard OpenCL extensions introduced to achieve high performance with the Epiphany architecture. We demonstrate the proposed programming model for matrix-matrix multiplication based on Cannon's algorithm showing that the hybrid model addresses the deficiencies of using OpenCL alone to achieve good benchmark performance.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, OpenSHMEM 2016: Third workshop on OpenSHMEM and Related Technologie

    Currency Market Reactions to Good and Bad News During the Asian Crisis

    There is considerable disagreement among analysts about the extent to which the spread of the Asian crisis was based on reasonable changes in expectations about fundamentals versus pure contagion effects resulting from imperfections in the behavior of currency and financial markets. In this paper we focus specifically on the behavior of the foreign exchange market for the five Asian countries. We find little support for the hypothesis that the Asian currency crisis was dominated by panic in the markets such that investors and speculators reacted much more strongly to bad than to good news. While the strongest reactions were to home news, there were also a number of significant cross effects. Almost all of these were of the same sign, suggesting that investors typically assumed that what was good for one country was good for all. Again, there was no systematic evidence of stronger reactions to bad than to good news. The markets may have overreacted in general, pushing currencies below the levels justified by the fundamentals, but, if so, this did not undercut the markets ability to respond to good as well as bad news, nor do these responses appear to have been systematically smaller to good than to bad news. The symptoms of the blind panic that has so often been alleged do not appear in the data.

    Mapping Functions in Health-Related Quality of Life: Mapping From Two Cancer-Specific Health-Related Quality-of-Life Instruments to EQ-5D-3L.

    BACKGROUND: Clinical trials in cancer frequently include cancer-specific measures of health but not preference-based measures such as the EQ-5D that are suitable for economic evaluation. Mapping functions have been developed to predict EQ-5D values from these measures, but there is considerable uncertainty about the most appropriate model to use, and many existing models are poor at predicting EQ-5D values. This study aims to investigate a range of potential models to develop mapping functions from 2 widely used cancer-specific measures (FACT-G and EORTC-QLQ-C30) and to identify the best model. METHODS: Mapping models are fitted to predict EQ-5D-3L values using ordinary least squares (OLS), tobit, 2-part models, splining, and to EQ-5D item-level responses using response mapping from the FACT-G and QLQ-C30. A variety of model specifications are estimated. Model performance and predictive ability are compared. Analysis is based on 530 patients with various cancers for the FACT-G and 771 patients with multiple myeloma, breast cancer, and lung cancer for the QLQ-C30. RESULTS: For FACT-G, OLS models most accurately predict mean EQ-5D values with the best predicting model using FACT-G items with similar results using tobit. Response mapping has low predictive ability. In contrast, for the QLQ-C30, response mapping has the most accurate predictions using QLQ-C30 dimensions. The QLQ-C30 has better predicted EQ-5D values across the range of possible values; however, few respondents in the FACT-G data set have low EQ-5D values, which reduces the accuracy at the severe end. CONCLUSIONS: OLS and tobit mapping functions perform well for both instruments. Response mapping gives the best model predictions for QLQ-C30. The generalizability of the FACT-G mapping function is limited to populations in moderate to good health

    Evaluation of a commercially available rapid urinary porphobilinogen test

    Background: Demonstration of substantially increased urinary excretion of porphobilinogen is the cornerstone of diagnosing acute porphyria crisis. Because porphobilinogen testing is not implemented on clinical chemistry analysers, respective analyses are available in rather few clinical laboratories. The aim of this study was to critically describe and to evaluate a semi-quantitative rapid test for urinary porphobilinogen determination which is commercially available and recommended by the American Porphyria Foundation. Methods: Urinary samples from patients with acute intermittent porphyria and control samples were analysed and the semi-quantitative results were compared with the results obtained by a manual quantitative spectrophotometric method. Results: In all 32 samples studied, acceptable agreement between the results of the rapid test and the quantitative test was observed. Handling of the test was found to be convenient. Conclusions: The assay was found to be reliable and has the potential to increase the availability of porphobilinogen testing in the field

    Phase-resolved Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectroscopy

    We present highly time-resolved HST FOS UV spectroscopy of the nova-like binary V795 Her. Several key results emerge. For the first time we find a strong 2.6-h signature in the variability of the UV lines. The HST data reveal no evidence of a 4.8-h ‘period’, in contrast to our previous IUE observations. This, and differences in the spectral line characteristics, suggests that HST found the system in a different state from earlier IUE observations. The C IV line alone contains a fairly stable, asymmetric, extended blueward absorption trough which we associate with a wind outflow. The 2.6-h variations of the line profiles are largely confined to an interval of about 0.4 in phase and to the velocity regime −1500 < v < 0 km s−1, the changes being dominated by the apparent decline and re-emergence of a blueshifted emission peak. The complex profiles permit many empirical interpretations, but the simplest attributes the variability to a narrow (FWHM∌1000 km s−1) emission component which is always blueshifted with a mean velocity of around –600 km s−1. This interpretation, however, is not readily related to any obvious source within the binary. An alternative picture, which attempts to relate the UV and (simultaneously observed) optical line behaviour, invokes a more stable, broad (FWHM∌2000 km s−1) emission feature, the intrinsic morphology of which is disguised by superposed constant and variable absorption components. One tentative physical explanation of such a decomposition involves an accretion stream that overflows the accretion disc. However, several problems with this model remain to be resolved. We also draw attention to similarities between the velocity-restricted behaviour in the UV lines of V795 Her and that in the optical lines of T Tauri stars. This might indicate a connection between V795 Her and the magnetically influenced inflow/outflow characteristics associated with the central star in T Tauri systems. If such a connection were eventually demonstrated, it would reopen the question of whether the 2.6-h period in V795 Her is really the binary period and whether the system is in fact related to the intermediate polars

    Estimating a preference-based index from the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - Outcome Measure (CORE-OM): valuation of CORE-6D

    Background: The Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) is used to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological therapies in people with common mental disorders. The objective of this study was to estimate a preference-based index for this population using CORE-6D, a health state classification system derived from CORE-OM consisting of a 5-item emotional component and a physical item, and to demonstrate a novel method for generating states that are not orthogonal. Methods: Rasch analysis was used to identify 11 plausible ‘emotional’ health states from CORE-6D (rather than conventional statistical design that would generate implausible states). By combining these with the 3 response levels of the physical item of CORE-6D, 33 plausible health states can be described, of which 18 were selected for valuation. An interview valuation survey of 220 members of public in South Yorkshire, UK, was undertaken using the time-trade-off method to value the 18 health states; regression analysis was subsequently used to predict values for all possible states described by CORE-6D. Results: A number of multivariate regression models were built to predict values for the 33 plausible health states of CORE-6D, using the Rasch logit value of the emotional health state and the response level of the physical item as independent variables. A cubic model with high predictive value (adjusted R squared 0.990) was finally selected, which can be used to predict utility values for all 927 states described by CORE-6D. Conclusion: The CORE-6D preference-based index will enable the assessment of cost-effectiveness of interventions for people with common mental disorders using existing and prospective CORE-OM datasets. The new method for generating states may be useful for other instruments with highly correlated dimensions

    Evaluating the articulation of programme theory in practice as observed in Quality Improvement initiatives

    Background: The Action-Effect Method(AEM) was co-developed by NIHR CLAHRC Northwest London (CLAHRC NWL) researchers and QI practitioners, building on Driver Diagrams(DD). This study aimed to determine AEM effectiveness in terms of technical aspects (how diagrams produced in practice compared with theoretical ideals) and social aspects (how engagement with the method related to social benefits). Methods Diagrams were scored on criteria developed on theoretical ideals of programme theory. 65 programme theory diagrams were reviewed (21 published Driver Diagrams (External DDs), 22 CLAHRC NWL Driver Diagrams (Internal DDs), and 21 CLAHRC NWL Action-Effect Diagrams(AEDs)). Social functions were studied through ethnographic observation of frontline QI teams in AEM sessions facilitated by QI experts. Qualitative analysis used inductive and deductive coding. Results ANOVA indicated the AEM significantly improved the quality of programme theory diagrams over Internal and External DDs on an average of 5 criteria from an 8-point assessment. Articulated aims were more likely to be patient-focused and high-level in AEDs than DDs. The cause/effect relationships from intervention to overall aim also tended to be clearer and were more likely than DDs to contain appropriate measure concepts. Using the AEM also served several social functions such as facilitating dialogue among multidisciplinary teams, and encouraging teams to act scientifically and pragmatically about planning and measuring QI interventions. Implications: The Action-Effect Method developed by CLAHRC NWL resulted in improvements over Driver Diagrams in articulating programme theory, which has wide-ranging benefits to quality improvement, including encouraging broad multi-disciplinary buy-in to clear aims and pre-planning a rigorous evaluation strategy

    Superconducting transition of a two-dimensional Josephson junction array in weak magnetic fields

    The superconducting transition of a two-dimensional (2D) Josephson junction array exposed to weak magnetic fields has been studied experimentally. Resistance measurements reveal a superconducting-resistive phase boundary in serious disagreement with the theoretical and numerical expectations. Critical scaling analyses of the IVIV characteristics indicate contrary to the expectations that the superconducting-to-resistive transition in weak magnetic fields is associated with a melting transition of magnetic-field-induced vortices directly from a pinned-solid phase to a liquid phase. The expected depinning transition of vortices from a pinned-solid phase to an intermediate floating-solid phase was not observed. We discuss effects of the disorder-induced random pinning potential on phase transitions of vortices in a 2D Josephson junction array.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures (EPS+JPG format), RevTeX
