    On Asynchronous Session Semantics

    This paper studies a behavioural theory of the π-calculus with session types under the fundamental principles of the practice of distributed computing — asynchronous communication which is order-preserving inside each connection (session), augmented with asynchronous inspection of events (message arrivals). A new theory of bisimulations is introduced, distinct from either standard asynchronous or synchronous bisimilarity, accurately capturing the semantic nature of session-based asynchronously communicating processes augmented with event primitives. The bisimilarity coincides with the reduction-closed barbed congruence. We examine its properties and compare them with existing semantics. Using the behavioural theory, we verify that the program transformation of multithreaded into event-driven session based processes, using Lauer-Needham duality, is type and semantic preserving

    Deformation of LeBrun's ALE metrics with negative mass

    In this article we investigate deformations of a scalar-flat K\"ahler metric on the total space of complex line bundles over CP^1 constructed by C. LeBrun. In particular, we find that the metric is included in a one-dimensional family of such metrics on the four-manifold, where the complex structure in the deformation is not the standard one.Comment: 20 pages, no figure.     On Observing Dynamic Prioritised Actions in SOC

    We study the impact on observational semantics for SOC of priority mechanisms which combine dynamic priority with local pre-emption. We define manageable notions of strong and weak labelled bisimilarities for COWS, a process calculus for SOC, and provide alternative characterisations in terms of open barbed bisimilarities. These semantics show that COWS’s priority mechanisms partially recover the capability to observe receive actions (that could not be observed in a purely asynchronous setting) and that high priority primitives for termination impose specific conditions on the bisimilarities

    The Paths to Choreography Extraction

    Choreographies are global descriptions of interactions among concurrent components, most notably used in the settings of verification (e.g., Multiparty Session Types) and synthesis of correct-by-construction software (Choreographic Programming). They require a top-down approach: programmers first write choreographies, and then use them to verify or synthesize their programs. However, most existing software does not come with choreographies yet, which prevents their application. To attack this problem, we propose a novel methodology (called choreography extraction) that, given a set of programs or protocol specifications, automatically constructs a choreography that describes their behavior. The key to our extraction is identifying a set of paths in a graph that represents the symbolic execution of the programs of interest. Our method improves on previous work in several directions: we can now deal with programs that are equipped with a state and internal computation capabilities; time complexity is dramatically better; we capture programs that are correct but not necessarily synchronizable, i.e., they work because they exploit asynchronous communication

    We have measured the heat capacity and magnetization of the spin one one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet NDMAP and constructed a magnetic field versus temperature phase diagram. We found a field induced long-range magnetic ordering. We have been successful in explaining the phase diagram theoretically.Comment: 6 pages, 18 figure

    Persistent superfluid phase in a three-dimensional quantum XY model with ring exchange

    We present quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on a quantum S=1/2 XY model with ring exchange (the J-K model) on a three-dimensional simple cubic lattice. We first characterize the ground state properties of the pure XY model, obtaining estimations for the energy, spin stiffness and spin susceptibility at T=0 in the superfluid phase. With the ring exchange, we then present simulation data on small lattices which suggests that the superfluid phase persists to very large values of the ring exchange K, without signatures of a phase transition. We comment on the consequences of this result for the search for various exotic phases in three dimensions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Field-induced 3- and 2-dimensional freezing in a quantum spin liquid

    Field-induced commensurate transverse magnetic ordering is observed in the Haldane-gap compound \nd by means of neutron diffraction. Depending on the direction of applied field, the high-field phase is shown to be either a 3-dimensional ordered N\'{e}el state or a short-range ordered state with dominant 2-dimensional spin correlations. The structure of the high-field phase is determined, and properties of the observed quantum phase transition are discussed.Comment: 4 pages 3 figure

    Right-veering diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces with boundary II

    We continue our study of the monoid of right-veering diffeomorphisms on a compact oriented surface with nonempty boundary, introduced in [HKM2]. We conduct a detailed study of the case when the surface is a punctured torus; in particular, we exhibit the difference between the monoid of right-veering diffeomorphisms and the monoid of products of positive Dehn twists, with the help of the Rademacher function. We then generalize to the braid group B_n on n strands by relating the signature and the Maslov index. Finally, we discuss the symplectic fillability in the pseudo-Anosov case by comparing with the work of Roberts [Ro1,Ro2].Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
