Discovering SUSY in the first LHC run
4 páginas, 1 figura.-- Trabajo presentado a la Fifth Conference on Physics at LHC celebrada en Hamburgo (Alemania) del 7 al 12 de junio de 2010.We analyze the potential of the first LHC physics run, assuming 1 fb−1 at ps = 7 TeV, to
discover Supersymmetry (SUSY). The results are based on SUSY parameter fits following a
frequentist approach. They include the experimental constraints from electroweak precision
data, (g − 2)μ, B physics and cosmological data. The two SUSY models under consideration
are the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking
mass parameters, and a model with common non-universal Higgs mass parameters in the
superpotential (NUHM1). We find that large parts of the regions preferred at the 68%
C.L. are accessible to early LHC running.Work

Anisotropic, non-monotonic behavior of the superconducting critical current in thin YBa2Cu3O7-d films on vicinal SrTiO3 surfaces
The critical current density of epitaxial YBCO films grown on vicinal SrTiO3
substrates was investigated by electrical transport measurements along and
across the steps of the SrTiO3 surface for a range of temperatures of 10 K to
85 K and in applied magnetic fields varying from 0 to 14 T. For vicinal angles
of 4 and 8 degrees, we found evidence of enhanced pinning in the longitudinal
direction at low magnetic fields for a wide region of temperatures and
attribute this phenomenon to anti-phase boundaries in the YBCO film. The
transverse Jc data showed a peak in the Jc(H) curve at low magnetic fields,
which was explained on the basis of magnetic interaction between Abrikosov and
Abrikosov-Josephson vortices. The in-plane Jc anisotropy observed for vicinal
angles of 0.4 degrees was reversed with respect to the 8 degree and 4 degree
samples. This phenomenon was interpreted on the basis of strain induced in the
YBCO film by the stepped substrate's surface.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

A survey-based analysis of the academic job market
Many postdoctoral researchers apply for faculty positions knowing relatively little about the hiring process or what is needed to secure a job offer. To address this lack of knowledge about the hiring process we conducted a survey of applicants for faculty positions: the survey ran between May 2018 and May 2019, and received 317 responses. We analyzed the responses to explore the interplay between various scholarly metrics and hiring outcomes. We concluded that, above a certain threshold, the benchmarks traditionally used to measure research success - including funding, number of publications or journals published in - were unable to completely differentiate applicants with and without job offers. Respondents also reported that the hiring process was unnecessarily stressful, time-consuming, and lacking in feedback, irrespective of outcome. Our findings suggest that there is considerable scope to improve the transparency of the hiring process
