Layer assignment and routing optimization for advanced technologies
As VLSI technology scales to deep sub-micron and beyond, it becomes
increasingly challenging to achieve timing closure for VLSI design. Since a
complete design flow consists of several phases, such as logic synthesis, placement, and routing, interconnect synthesis plays an important role which includes buffer insertion/sizing and timing-driven routing. Although progress has been achieved by many advanced routing techniques, the following aspects
can be exploited sufficiently for further improvement: (1) incremental layer assignment for timing optimization; (2) signal routing with the requirement of regularity; (3) power-efficient optical-electrical interconnect paradigm. Thus, to perform the layer assignment and routing optimization for advanced technologies,
an automated routing engine in a global view is essential to benefit the interconnect design while satisfying specific requirements.
This dissertation proposes a set of algorithms and methodology on layer
assignment and routing optimization for advanced technologies. The research includes two timing-driven incremental layer assignment approaches, synergistic
topology generation and routing synthesis for signal groups, and optical-electrical routing design for power efficiency.
For incremental layer assignment, most of the conventional approaches
target via minimization but neglect the timing issues. Meanwhile, via delays
are ignored but should be considered in emerging technology nodes. Then two
timing-driven incremental layer assignment frameworks are proposed, where all the nets are solved simultaneously with the integration of via delays: (1) optimization of the total sum of net delays and reduction of slew violations; (2) minimization of critical path timing in selected nets.
For on-chip signal routing, the bundled bits in one group may have different
pin locations, but they have to be routed in a regular manner by sharing common topologies. Very few previous works target inter-bit regularity via multi-layer topology selection. Furthermore, the routability and wire-length of the signal bits should also be optimized. Then an advanced synergistic routing engine is promoted, which is able to not only control routability and wire-length but also guide each bit routing intelligently for design regularity.
For optical-electrical co-design routing, optical interconnect shows its
advantage due to the dominance of bandwidth-distance-power properties. The previous works lack a detailed exploration of optical-electrical co-design for on-chip interconnects. During the transmission, signal quality can be affected by various loss sources and Electrical to Optical (EO)/Optical to Electrical (OE) conversion overheads should also be considered. Then a power-efficient routing flow for on-chip signals is presented, where optical connections can collaborate with electrical wires seamlessly.
The effectiveness of proposed algorithms and techniques is demonstrated in this dissertation. These approaches are able to achieve the improvements regarding specific metrics and eventually benefit the routing flow.Electrical and Computer Engineerin

complete solution is given for an open question (see the text) presented
recently by Kim, Koo and Park. Some further questions and results on similar
types of congruence properties of elliptic curves are also presented and

Prevalence and Determinants of Metabolic Syndrome among Women in Chinese Rural Areas
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is prevalent in recent years but few data is reported in the rural areas in China. The aim of this study was to examine MS prevalence and its risk factors among women in rural China. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Nantong Metabolic Syndrome Study (NMSS), a population based cross-sectional study, was conducted during 2007-2008 in Nantong, China. In person interviews, blood glucose and lipid measurements were completed for 13,505 female participants aged 18-74 years. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the US Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program, the Adult Treatment Panel (ATPIII) and modified ATPIII for Asian population has determined three criteria of MS. These criteria for MS were used and compared in this study. The prevalence of MS was 22.0%, 16.9% and 23.3% according to IDF, ATPIII and ATPIII-modified criteria, respectively. Levels of agreement of these criteria for MS were above 0.75. We found that vigorous-intensity of occupational physical activity was associated with a low prevalence of MS with OR of 0.76 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63-0.91). Rice wine drinkers (alcohol >12.8 g/day) had about 34% low risks of developing MS with OR of 0.66 (95% CI: 0.48-0.91), compared with non-drinkers. Odds ratio of MS was 1.81 (95% CI: 1.15-2.84) in women who smoked more than 20 pack-years, compared to non-smokers. Odds ratio of MS was 1.56 (95% CI: 1.25-1.95) in women who had familial history of diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and stroke, compared to women without familial history of those diseases. CONCLUSION: MS is highly prevalent among women in rural China. Both physical activity and rice wine consumption play a protective role, while family history and smoking are risk factors in MS development. Educational programs should be established for promoting healthy lifestyles and appropriate interventions in rural China
Causative agent distribution and antibiotic therapy assessment among adult patients with community acquired pneumonia in Chinese urban population
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Knowledge of predominant microbial patterns in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) constitutes the basis for initial decisions about empirical antimicrobial treatment, so a prospective study was performed during 2003–2004 among CAP of adult Chinese urban populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Qualified patients were enrolled and screened for bacterial, atypical, and viral pathogens by sputum and/or blood culturing, and by antibody seroconversion test. Antibiotic treatment and patient outcome were also assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Non-viral pathogens were found in 324/610 (53.1%) patients among whom <it>M. pneumoniae </it>was the most prevalent (126/610, 20.7%). Atypical pathogens were identified in 62/195 (31.8%) patients carrying bacterial pathogens. Respiratory viruses were identified in 35 (19%) of 184 randomly selected patients with adenovirus being the most common (16/184, 8.7%). The nonsusceptibility of <it>S. pneumoniae </it>to penicillin and azithromycin was 22.2% (Resistance (R): 3.2%, Intermediate (I): 19.0%) and 79.4% (R: 79.4%, I: 0%), respectively. Of patients (312) from whom causative pathogens were identified and antibiotic treatments were recorded, clinical cure rate with β-lactam antibiotics alone and with combination of a β-lactam plus a macrolide or with fluoroquinolones was 63.7% (79/124) and 67%(126/188), respectively. For patients having mixed <it>M. pneumoniae </it>and/or <it>C. pneumoniae </it>infections, a better cure rate was observed with regimens that are active against atypical pathogens (e.g. a β-lactam plus a macrolide, or a fluoroquinolone) than with β-lactam alone (75.8% vs. 42.9%, <it>p </it>= 0.045).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In Chinese adult CAP patients, <it>M. pneumoniae </it>was the most prevalent with mixed infections containing atypical pathogens being frequently observed. With <it>S. pneumoniae</it>, the prevalence of macrolide resistance was high and penicillin resistance low compared with data reported in other regions.</p
Glass transition temperature of cyclic stars
Cyclic homo- and diblock copolymers with different topologies were synthesized using a combination of "living" radical polymerization and "click" coupling reactions. The topologies included 2- and 3-arm stars, with the arms consisting of either cyclic or linear polystyrene. In addition, a diblock consisting of a cyclic polystyrene and a cyclic poly(acrylic acid) was also made. The topologies by imposing topological constraints due to the presence of cyclic polymers and branch points had a marked influence on the glass transition temperature (T-g. It was found that for the polystyrene topology series, the T-g increased above the glass transition temperature at infinite molecular weight for a linear chain (i.e., T-g(infinity)) and correlated to the more compact nature of cyclic polymers. For the cyclic diblock of polystyrene and poly(acrylic acid), the T-g increased significantly due to separation of the blocks into their pure phases. This resulted in significant stretching of the chains and thus loss of conformation entropy
